Manchester United confident they will beat Chelsea to Erling Haaland transfer

Manchester United are confident they will win the race to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, despite Chelsea desperately pushing for a deal this summer.

United narrowly missed out on signing Haaland, one of the hottest prospects in world football, 18 months ago when he left Red Bull Salzburg for the Bundesliga.

Despite turning down a move to Old Trafford, the Norway international holds his compatriot Solskjaer in high regard.

And United bosses think he will prove key in landing the forward, according to The Sun.

Solskjaer has just penned a new three-year deal, which United chiefs hope will convince Haaland he’s there for the long haul.

It’s thought he would be unwilling to move to Old Trafford, should Solskjaer be moved on.

Solskjaer has remained in close contact with the striker since they worked together at Molde, when he was managing the Norwegian side.

While in an ideal world, United would be pushing for his signature this summer, they have already spent big on Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho.

That means they will wait to try and sign him next summer, when they’re confident they will be the favourites to land him.

However, while United believe they would beat Chelsea to a deal if it became a direct shootout next summer, the Blues are hoping to avoid that scenario by signing him in this transfer window.

There has been little movement, with Dortmunt adamant they aren’t selling him this summer.

Haaland has a £63million release clause that comes into effect next summer, with clubs needing to pay more than twice that if they want to sign him this summer.

Chelsea are willing to do that – with a bid of £150m reported to be incoming – but Dortmund are expected to hold firm and if he stays, United believe they will be the club signing him next summer.

‘Why can Man Utd sign Raphael Varane and we can’t?’ – Jose Enrique slams Liverpool’s lack of transfer ambition

Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool have made just one signing this summer (Picture: Getty)

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has questioned the club’s lack of transfer activity, concerned the club have been left behind the likes of their arch-rivals Manchester United.

The Reds moved quickly to agree a deal to sign Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig back in May but he remains their only major signing the summer.

The club have also lost influential midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in that time and while there is still time for more additions before the transfer window closes, their rivals have already been busy.

United have been hailed for moving decisively this summer with Jadon Sancho finally brought to Old Trafford in a deal worth £73m.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have also agreed a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid in a move that could provide a huge boost to United’s title prospects next season.

United have a deal in place to sign Varane (Picture: Getty)

Having watched United sign one of Real Madrid’s most important players, Enrique has accused Liverpool’s owners of standing still in the transfer market, having not shown the same ambition since the signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

‘I am concerned with Liverpool’s lack of business in the transfer window so far, the problem with the owners is that we’ve had to sell before buying players in the past – and that seems to still be the case,’ Enrique wrote in his column for Empire of the Kop.

‘The only reason we have players like Alisson and van Dijk is because we sold Philippe Coutinho. Without that, we wouldn’t have these players and probably the titles they helped us win.

‘I believe the signing of Konate was great and it was for the right money, but sometimes you have to go out and spend the big money on the big players.

‘Before Alisson and van Dijk arrived, we were contenders to win titles and after they signed, we actually won one. So these kind of players are needed.

‘Why can Manchester United go to Real Madrid and sign one of their best players in Raphael Varane and we can’t?’

How Manchester United legend helped convince Raphael Varane to snub Chelsea and PSG interest

Manchester United new boy Raphael Varane snubbed last-minute approaches from both Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain after speaking with Darren Fletcher, according to reports.

The Red Devils have agreed a fee worth around £40million for the World Cup winner, who said his goodbyes to his Real Madrid teammates on Friday and will now fly to Manchester to complete the deal.

Although Varane only had a year left on his contract, the £40m fee – which is just £34m up front – represents a bargain for one of football’s most decorated players who is still in the prime of his career.

The Frenchman had made it clear to Real that he would not be extending his contract, and ESPN report that both Chelsea and PSG were invited to bid for Varane by the Spanish club.

Thomas Tuchel is keen to sign a new centre-back – with talks for Jules Kounde advancing – and would have jumped at the chance to bring the four-time Champions League winner to Stamford Bridge, while a move to Paris would have seen Varane reunited with Sergio Ramos.

But United’s early conversations with Varane were so encouraging that the Frenchman outright snubbed Chelsea and PSG’s interest, insisting he only wanted to move to Old Trafford.

The biggest contributor to the success of the talks was recently appointed technical director Fletcher, with ESPN claiming Varane was ‘particularly swayed’ by what the Scot had to say about United.

Both Fletcher and football director John Murtagh were appointed back in March and led talks with Varane’s representatives, while Ed Woodward was responsible for agreeing a fee with Madrid.

The newly appointed duo made such an impression that Varane even rejected a more lucrative contract offer from Real, with Fletcher selling United to the 28-year-old and convincing him to challenge himself in the Premier League.

Fletcher came through United’s academy and made 342 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning the Champions League in the 2007/08 season and five Premier League titles.

Speaking about his role when he was appointed, the Scot explained: ‘We are moving in the right direction and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Ole and his coaching team, and now with John as the football director, to help bring young players through and further develop the football side of the club.’

Ben White trains with his new Arsenal teammates for the first time

Ben Whtie was put through his paces in training against his new Arsenal teammates less than 24 hours after his £50million transfer from Brighton was rubber stamped.

The England international had been earmarked by Mikel Arteta as David Luiz’s long-term successor with the veteran Brazilian centre-half having left the north London club at the end of last season.

White passed a two-part medical earlier this week and will be in contention to feature against Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday as the Gunners step-up their pre-season preparations.

Arteta’s side will meet the Champions League holders in the opening fixture of ‘The Mind Series’ before facing north London rivals Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next weekend.

The Arsenal boss already has the likes of Pablo Mari, Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Gabriel Magalhaes to call upon for those fixtures, but will hope his latest recruit can make an instant impact.

‘Ben was a top target for us and it’s great that we’ve completed his signing,’ said Arteta on Friday. ‘Ben has been educated with two very good clubs, Brighton and Leeds, in recent seasons.

‘He has benefitted well from two very good coaching set-ups and has shown with both Brighton and on loan with Leeds what a strong talent he is.

‘Ben is an intelligent defender who is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and his style fits perfectly with us.

‘And of course, he is still young, so his age and profile fits with what we are building here. We are all looking forward to Ben being central to our future long-term plans.’

Mikel Arteta asked Bukayo Saka for his verdict on Ben White before sanctioning £50m deal

Arsenal finally completed the signing of Ben White on Friday after nearly a year for tracking the England defender.

The Gunners have invested £50million in the 23-year-old who will slot in as the right-sided centre-half in what Mikel Arteta hopes will be a new-look team by the start of the new season.

David Luiz’s decision to depart at the end of his contract earlier this summer meant Arsenal were short of the sort of defender who can penetrate the lines and carry the ball into opposition territory.

Arteta is confident White fits the bill but, according to The Athletic, the Arsenal boss consulted with Bukayo Saka during England’s Euro 2020 campaign to gauge the winger’s opinion on his international teammate.

Saka’s feedback was overwhelmingly positive and the respect between the pair was clearly mutual given the glowing reference White gave the Hale End academy graduate during his first interview as an Arsenal player.

Asked which player he is most looking forward to training with at the Emirates, £50m Arsenal signing White said: ‘So I had a bit with Bukayo over the summer.

‘I hadn’t seen much of him before then and he really surprised me how talented he is.

‘[I didn’t train against him a lot] but some of the other boys did. He’s so sharp and I was really surprised how good he is.’

White, meanwhile, was said to have been coveted by the likes of Manchester City and Everton, but claimed it was an easy decision to join Arsenal despite the fact they will not compete in Europe this season.

‘I don’t think I needed too much convincing to be fair,’ he said. ‘Obviously Arsenal speaks for itself and I spoke to the gaffer a number of times during the summer.

‘I got good vibes and the way the gaffer wants to play, I think I can produce quality in this team and hopefully get Arsenal back.’

Lautaro Martinez happy to seal Arsenal transfer as Spurs consider hijacking move

Lautaro Martinez is open to leaving Inter Milan for Arsenal this summer as the Gunners weigh up a move for the Argentina international.

Martinez, 23, is available for transfer this summer as Inter attempt to try and balance their books.

The Gunners, who were in contact with the Serie A side over the sale of Hector Bellerin, have enquired about his availability and expect the forward to be available, should the right offer be placed on the table.

According to The Athletic, it would be a simple deal to complete, with Italian champions Inter desperate for a cash injection as they look to become a more sustainable club.

While Arsenal have long held an interest in signing Martinez – who almost completed a £100million move to Barcelona in the not too distant past – a move has previously been considered unrealistic.

As such, he was not on their original list of summer targets but the opportunity has presented itself to sign him.

Martinez – who won Serie A with his club and the Copa America with his country last season – is open to a transfer to the Premier League and is interested in signing for Arsenal.

He was due for a big salary jump in Milan and had agreed a new contract with the club but their financial restrictions have meant they were unable to sign it off.

A move to Arsenal would see him earn significantly more, with Inter team-mates Romelu Lukaku, Christian Eriksen and Alexis Sanchez all earning more than double the £2.1million-a-year he’s currently paid.

The Gunners are not the only Premier League club who are monitoring Martinez’s situation.

North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are linked with the Argentine, but only if they end up losing Harry Kane to Manchester City.

For Arsenal, a move could be dependent on Alexandre Lacazette’s future as they look to raise funds.

They mentioned the French striker as part of a potential deal for Martinez, but Inter are only interested in a cash move.

Kurt Zouma threatening to block Chelsea’s move for Jules Kounde by refusing £50m swap deal with Sevilla

Chelsea’s bid to sign Jules Kounde has hit a stumbling block with Kurt Zouma unwilling to join the Spanish side as part of the deal.

The Blues are eager to use the Frenchman as part of a £50m deal to sign Kounde ahead of the new season with Chelsea chief Marina Granovskaia and Sevilla director of football Monchi holding further talks today.

It was hoped including Zouma would help drive down the price for the 22-year-old, who was also targeted by Manchester United and Real Madrid this summer.

Reports have claimed Sevilla would be willing to accept an offer of €45m plus Zouma but the Daily Mail claim that deal is in major doubt with Zouma eager to remain in the Premier League.

The report claims Zouma is giving ‘serious consideration’ to refusing to be used as a makeweight in the deal.

If he is to leave Stamford Bridge, the defender wants to remain in the Premier League and would preferably remain in London.

West Ham United are keen on the former Saint-Etienne youngster and are in discussions over a £20m move.

Zouma is keen on the switch to east London and it remains to be seen whether he would reconsider a switch to Spain.

Sevilla are also thought to be admirers of Andreas Christensen but Chelsea are eager to keep hold of the Dane.

Mikel Arteta told Ben White he hopes there will be more ‘significant’ signings to follow this summer

Ben White

Mikel Arteta made it clear to Ben White that he wouldn’t be the club’s last major signing this summer during transfer negotiations.

Arsenal confirmed the signing of White on Friday with the 23-year-old arriving at the Emirates for a £50m fee from Brighton.

He becomes the club’s third signing of the summer with Nuno Tavares coming into offer cover at left-back with Albert Sambi Lokonga bolstering the Gunners’ midfield options.

Arteta is keen to continue rebuilding his squad however and wants to strengthen in a number of positions before the transfer window closes.

Bringing White to the Emirates represents Arsenal’s biggest move of the summer to date.

Arsenal
Arteta keen on more new faces (Picture: Getty)

According to The Athletic, the Gunners saw five bids rejected before they came to an agreement with Brighton with Arteta determined to get his man.

The report also claims the Arsenal boss told White’s camp during talks that he hopes the defender won’t be the club’s last ‘significant’ signing of the summer transfer window.

One of the areas Arteta is keen to strengthen is in attacking midfield.

Arsenal want to sign Leicester City star James Maddison but with the Foxes under no pressure to sell, it would take in the excess of £70m for them to even consider a sale.

The Gunners also remain interested in Martin Odegaard following his loan spell during the second-half of the 2020-21 season.

Arteta also wants to sign a new right-back but any move to fill that role will likely hinge on whether Hector Bellerin leaves the club.

Mauricio Pochettino responds to Paul Pogba speculation as PSG weigh up move for Manchester United star

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino says the club are still working on a number of signings – but chose not to address the club’s interest in signing Paul Pogba from Manchester United.

Pogba has one year remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford with talks ongoing over a new contract.

United want to keep the France international but his agent Mino Raiola has already held talks with PSG over a possible move this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side face the possibility of losing Pogba for nothing next year if they can’t tie him down to a new deal – with PSG reportedly ready to offer £40m for his services this summer.

But when quizzed on possible transfers, former Tottenham boss and one-time candidate for the United job Pochettino refused to name names.

Villarreal CF v Manchester United - UEFA Europa League Final

‘I won’t give any names, I don’t like to speak about players who belong to other clubs,’ he told Le Parisien.

‘The club is working away quietly, achieving some good things. At the end of the window, we’ll see who the new players are – if there are any – and which players leave the squad.’

While there is interest from rival clubs United have not given up on Pogba signing a new deal with the club.

The Frenchman is said to have a very good relationship with Solskjaer and has been enthused by the club’s transfer business this summer – with countryman Raphael Varane poised to join Jadon Sancho in signing for United this summer.

‘I needed to feel like I was playing my part’ – Marcus Rashford shares emotional open letter responding to surgery criticism

Marcus Rashford
Rashford set to be sidelined until October (Picture: Getty)

Marcus Rashford has spoken out over his decision to delay undergoing surgery – suggesting he would have chosen to go under the knife instead of featuring at Euro 2020 had he known his game time would be limited.

The Manchester United forward is to undergo an operation to resolve a shoulder issue, one of a series of injuries that left the 23-year-old playing through the pain barrier last season.

Rashford made 64 appearances for club and country last summer but failed to start a game at Euro 2020, making four appearances off the bench.

A small section of fans have questioned Rashford’s decision to delay his decision to have surgery.

But in an emotional open letter published on his social media channels, Rashford has hit back.

‘When I was 11-years-old MU helped me and my family out of a really difficult situation. I will always feel indebted,’ he wrote.

‘When the club needs me, I’ll be there. Any role I can play in helping my boyhood club I’m going to do it. Even to my detriment at times. Having been out of the game recovering from the double stress fracture, and having spent a lot of time away from teammates and staff who’d been a part of my life as long as I could remember, I needed to feel like I was part of something again.

‘I needed to feel like I was playing my part. I’ve read some call me selfish for holding off getting the surgery this season but it was never about putting myself first an how we’ve reached this point, and something as a 23-year-old I’ve had to learn the hard way. To guarantee I can play this game as long as possible I need to listen to my body.

‘Everyone has an opinion but no one knows my body better than me. It’s hard to describe the feeling of representing your country. Given the choice no one would ever turn that down at such a big tournament. As a little boy or girl you dream of those moments. I had been deemed for the full season, and given my injuries were being managed, what was another couple of weeks?

‘Managing the pain I was training well and found a lot of comfort in the England camp after the Europa League final. On hindsight, if I had of known I wouldn’t have played a significant role in the Euros, would I have gone? Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn’t it…

‘I didn’t want to let anyone down but ultimately looking at some of my performances towards the end of last season I felt like I was. When I step on the pitch I always give 100 per cent. Physically my 100 percent just wasn’t possible.

‘I’m walking away with my lessons learnt. We like and we learn as they say but what is never in doubt is my commitment to the club and the national team. It’s been a hard one but I’m coming back physically and mentally stronger. Thank you for all of the kind messages.’
