Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour eyeing deadline day loan move to Southampton

Billy Gilmour is reportedly in talks over a possible deadline day loan move to Southampton with the Chelsea midfielder eyeing more regular playing time.
The 19-year-old burst onto the scene under previous Blues boss Frank Lampard last season and was enjoying a successful spell in the first team until an untimely knee injury halted his progress.
Gilmour has found starts difficult to come by since his return to action earlier this campaign and has been heavily linked with a January move away from Stamford Bridge.

New boss Thomas Tuchel hasn’t included the midfielder in any of his matchday squads since being appointed as Lampard’s successor earlier this week.
Gilmour missed out completely against Wolves and Burnley, and according to the Daily Mail, he is in negotiations with Southampton regarding a last-minute switch to St Mary’s until the end of the season.
The teenager is looking to boost his chances of landing a spot in Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad this summer and the report states he has already informed the club of his desire to leave on loan before Monday’s deadline.
Lampard was a big admirer of Gilmour during his time at Stamford Bridge, and his successor Tuchel has already talked up the youngster’s ability despite being at the club for less than a week.
‘Of Billy I have a good impression,’ Tuchel said at his first press conference on Thursday.
‘He is a very strategic guy, with a very high level of game understanding, very good in the first contact, very clever in positioning.
‘We will see if he has the physical level to compete in the centre of the field in the most physical league in the world, but he is super quick with his feet, super fast with his decision making, and very good in positioning like I said.’

West Ham vs Liverpool TV channel, live stream, team news, odds, time and head-to-head

West Ham host Liverpool on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League with David Moyes looking to keep up his side’s excellent recent form.
The Hammers have been something of a surprise package this season, winning their last six matches in all competitions and going into this match fifth in the Premier League.
Liverpool are only one place and two points above them so there is no lack of motivation for Moyes’ men who can leapfrog the champions.
The Reds returned to winning ways last time out with a good performance against Tottenham, but after a sticky spell prior to that, they have lost significant ground in the title race.
When is West Ham vs Liverpool?
The match kicks-off at 4.30pm on Sunday 31 January at the London Stadium.
What TV channel is West Ham vs Liverpool on and is there a live stream?
Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League will be showing the game live with coverage following the Leicester City vs Leeds United match.
Subscribers can stream the action on Sky Go or the Sky Sports app, while non-subscribers can stream through a Sky Sports Pass on Now TV.
West Ham vs Liverpool team news
West Ham are fairly clear of injuries, with only Arthur Masuaku missing out with a long-term knee injury.
Liverpool are still struggling with their own long-term fitness problems as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota and Naby Keita all remain out.
Joel Matip is injured again, while Fabinho is not expected to return in time, leaving Jurgen Klopp very short at centre-back. Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams and Jordan Henderson appear to be the options in central defence.

Thomas Tuchel explains decision to drop Hakim Ziyech from Chelsea squad to face Burnley

Hakim Ziyech was a surprise absentee from the Chelsea squad to face Burnley, but new Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel insists he needed a break.
Ziyech started Tuchel’s first game in charge against Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek but was left out of the squad in its entirety for Sunday’s match at Stamford Bridge.
The summer signing from Ajax has struggled to find full fitness since arriving in west London and has only started eight Premier League matches this season.
And Tuchel cited fatigue and risk of injury as the reason for leaving him out against the Clarets.
‘Hakim has been in a bit of overload since five weeks so he has a bit of a risk of getting injured if he plays more than say 30 minutes,’ Tuchel said.
‘For that we decided to take a break now to go out of the risk zone. We decided this yesterday.’

Zieych’s exclusion wasn’t the only surprising move from Tuchel.
£50million summer signing Ben Chilwell was dropped to the bench, with Marcos Alonso – who looked set to leave the club before Frank Lampard was sacked – restored to the starting line-up.
There were four changes in total, with Kai Havertz and Olivier Giroud joining Ziyech and Chilwell in dropping out of the starting XI.
Timo Werner, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Alonso were restored to the side.

Chelsea vs Burnley team news: Ben Chilwell dropped for Marcos Alonso

Thomas Tuchel has named his second XI as Chelsea manager and £50million Ben Chilwell is the biggest casualty.
Tuchel has axed the England left-back and replaced him with Marcos Alonso, who was widely tipped to leave Stamford Bridge this month.
But having fell out of favour under Frank Lampard, he has been restored to the starting XI as one of four changes.
Kai Havertz, Olivier Giroud and Hakim Ziyech have all dropped out, with Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount all in the starting lineup.
N’Golo Kante has returned to the bench but there is no place in the squad at all for Ziyech.
Tuchel’s first game in charge ended in a 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea vs Burnley team news
Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Silva, Hudson-Odoi, Kovacic, Jorginho, Alonso, Mount, Werner, Abraham
Burnley XI: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Pieters, McNeil, Westwood, Cork, Brady, Wood, Vydra
He admitted his first team selection was ‘unfair’ because of how little time he’d had to spend with his new players.
However, he has spent the rest of the week with his squad and will have a better feel for which players he will rely on this season.
A win for the Blues could see them move as high as sixth, although three of the teams they could pass will all have a game in hand on Tuchel’s men.
Burnley are looking to edge further away from the relegation zone.
Their cause was helped greatly by a smash-and-grab 3-2 win over Aston Villa. They start the match eight points clear of the bottom three.

William Saliba admits he was ‘hurt’ by Mikel Arteta’s treatment at Arsenal

Arsenal defender William Saliba has admitted he was ‘hurt’ by Mikel Arteta’s decision to overlook him this season.
The French centre-back agreed to join the Gunners in 2019 but he arrived at the Emirates last summer after fulfilling a season-long loan deal with St-Etienne.
Saliba arrived with a promising reputation and Arsenal fans were hopeful that the £27million defender could cure the club’s problems at the back.
However, Saliba was signed under previous manager Unai Emery and it’s clear that Arteta didn’t share the Spaniard’s view that the defender was ready for the first team.

Saliba didn’t play a single minute for the first team before he joined Nice on loan earlier this month and his appearances for the U23s’ were far from ideal as the defender sustained injury and was sent off.
Arteta opted to sign Gabriel from Lille last summer, meaning even more competition for Saliba to force his way into the first team.
And the 19-year-old admits he’s been left ‘hurt’ by Arteta’s decision to shun him this term.
‘I really, really, really didn’t think that I would be transferred for €30m, to think that I would arrive, where people were expecting a lot from me, the fans excited about me and you find yourself in the reserves,’ said Saliba.
‘To play zero, zero nothing in the Europa League or the league. I was in the squad once in the league cup. It hurt me, it affected me.
‘I don’t think I left too early. When you feel ready you have to go. I don’t think I left too early. These things happen. I believe in myself.’
Saliba has made four appearances for Nice since moving back from France but his loan expires at the end of the campaign.
The defender admits he didn’t expect to be back in his home country so soon after his move to London but he’s not ruling out a permanent return.
‘I am just focused on doing the absolute most and best possible for the next 6 months. After that, we will see,’ said Saliba.

Leicester prepare late transfer bid for out-of-favour Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Leicester are plotting a late transfer bid for Arsenal utiity man Ainsley Maitland-Niles, reports claim.
Maitland-Niles, 23, is desperate to leave the Emirates this month in order to get more playing time ahead of the Euros this summer.
The Arsenal man wants to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s squad – something he feels he can’t do given his lack of playing time at the Emirates.
Maitland-Niles has started just five times in the Premier League this season and has only made one league start this month.
A host of Premier League sides are interested in his services. Southampton, West Brom and Newcastle had all registered their interest.
But Leicester are hoping to win the race to sign him, according to The Mirror.

The Foxes are proposing a six-month loan with an option to make it a permanent transfer in the summer.
Maitland-Niles knows he needs regular first-team football if he’s to earn his spot in Southgate’s squad and Mikel Arteta faces a decision whether to grant him an exit before tomorrow’s deadline.
Southampton are keen on a move but made it clear they are in the market for a full-back, but Maitland-Niles wants his long-term future to be in the centre of the park.
Leicester, however, would be able to offer him the chance to operate in midfield.
Injuries to Dennis Praet and Wilfried Ndidi, along with the potential exit of Hamza Chowdhury, means there are openings in the middle of the pitch.
While Leicester is his favoured choice, Arsenal would prefer him to move to Southampton to get him regular gametime in the full-back role. Maitland-Niles, according to The Athletic, doesn’t share that view.
Arsenal are not so keen, however, on him joining relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion.
They may be unwilling to let him leave full stop. With Kieran Tierney injured and a lack of cover at left-back, Maitland-Niles may be forced to stay.
However, they risk losing him at a cut-price fee in the summer, with his contract expiring a year later, and may view now as the best time to cash in if he won’t commit to a new deal.

Arsenal consider late Patrick van Aanholt move before January transfer window closes

Arsenal are plotting a late move for Crystal Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt before the January transfer window closes.
The Gunner have already signed Martin Odegaard and Mat Ryan on loan during the winter window but still have until 11pm on February 1 to seal a third signing.
Cover at left-back is Mikel Arteta’s priority and Van Aanholt has emerged as a surprise target.
The former Chelsea and Sunderland left-back is out of contract in the summer and could be allowed to leave this month following the emergence of Tyrick Mitchell at Selhurst Park.
And Arsenal are plotting a shock move for the 30-year-old, according to the Mirror.
The Gunners were thought to be interested in a deal for Mitchell but Palace are refusing to part ways with the 21-year-old, who they view to be a big part of their future.

So Mikel Arteta’s side are turning their attention to his team-mate Van Aanholt.
Palace could be willing to cash in to avoid losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Cedric Soares started at left-back against Manchester United on Sunday, with Kieran Tierney currently sidelined.
Bukayo Saka and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have also filled in at left-back this season but Arteta wants recognised cover in the role.
Van Aanholt has spent four years at Palace but his time at Selhurst Park is set to come to an end.

Thomas Partey rates his performance in Manchester United stalemate

Thomas Partey admitted he didn’t have his ‘best game’ against Manchester United but was delighted that Arsenal extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League.
Partey completed 90 minutes for the first time since November after an injury-hit spell for the Gunners but wasn’t at the peak of his powers in the 0-0 draw.
He made several sloppy passes during the game and he confessed he wasn’t satisfied with his performance.
‘Not my best game,’ he posted on Instagram. ‘But I’m happy to make 90 minutes and also continue with our Premier League unbeaten run.’
Arsenal are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League matches and have climbed back into the top half of the table – albeit having played more games than those around them.
While Partey – who arrived from Atletico Madrid this summer – wasn’t at his best, he has earned admiring glances during his brief time at Arsenal.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane is convinced he will be a ‘big player’ for the Gunners.
‘He came in on transfer deadline day, so he never got quite up to speed, so it wasn’t a surprise that he got injured,’ Keane told Sky Sports.
‘He’s going to be a big player for Arsenal over the next few years. His track record… he’s used to playing in the biggest games, we know the important role in the middle of the park for Arsenal, they’ve lacked the physical presence.
‘I’ve got no doubt that if he stays fit – which we’ll probably see more of next season – then he’ll be a big player for Arsenal.’
Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool defender, agreed.
‘I’ve been really impressed with him, I think everyone has,’ added Caragher.
‘I think off the back of that performance (against Manchester United away), Arsenal supporters and even the manager, looked like they had a real midfielder.’

Thomas Tuchel sends warning to struggling Chelsea star Kai Havertz

Thomas Tuchel has warned Kai Havertz that he cannot ‘rely on his endless talent’ alone but remains confident he will become a ‘huge part’ of Chelsea.
Havertz has struggled since arriving at Stamford Bridge in a £75million transfer this summer and has only found the net once in 17 Premier League appearances.
The 21-year-old found him in and out of the Chelsea team in the final weeks of Frank Lampard’s reign but played a full 90 minutes against Wolves in Tuchel’s first game in charge.
Tuchel insists he will be pushing Havertz to fulfil his potential and is confident he’ll get there, if he puts the hard yards in.
‘What I feel from him is a very friendly, intelligent and open guy, with a lot of potential and we will push him,’ said Tuchel.
‘He seems to be like the guy that needs to be pushed, we will not stop it.

‘For him, this league is perfect because he cannot rest. He has so much potential that he has to be challenged physically also, it is not enough that he can rely on his endless talent.
‘In the end, the question is does he have this, can he show his teeth in the end when it gets tough and I was very happy on Wednesday, it was him that did almost the decisive header in the box against all the towers from Wolverhampton.
‘It would have been a nice goal but he did not hesitate and that is what I want to see from him, the rest will come because Kai can be a huge, huge part of this club.’
Tuchel also offered an explanation as to why the transition to English football has been so tricky for the Germany international.
‘His potential is endless, almost endless. It is a challenge for him, and I think he made a very brave choice, you have to understand,’ added Tuchel.
‘I am a huge fan of Bayer Leverkusen in terms of how they have developed as a club over years and years and what players they developed and what quality of football they play.
‘But, you come from Leverkusen to Chelsea, the culture can not be any more different. A club where it is okay to maybe be second or third best, to reach the top four and repeat for this on a very high level.

‘Then you go to a club where they talk about trophies and winning titles, it is so open, there is a certain atmosphere like at Bayern Munich they do this every year, they demand titles, titles and more titles and it does something to a club in the atmosphere.
‘So that means that Kai has stopped not just to a different country, not only to a different club, not only different teammates, itself is already complicated, he even changes his culture and club environment in a dramatic way.
‘And I love it because he is so far out of his comfort zone.’

Manchester United plot £60million transfer move for Jules Kounde

Manchester United have identified Sevilla’s Jules Kounde as there No.1 transfer target as they look to recruit a new first choice partner for Harry Maguire.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been desperate to sign a new centre-half during the summer window, but United were beaten by rivals Manchester City to the signing of Nathan Ake.
United harbour a long-standing interest in RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano but the France international now appears destined to sign for Bayern Munich after the German’s club’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, revealed productive talks had taken place between the two parties recently.
He said: ‘We had a good meeting with his agents yesterday. Let’s see what happens.’
According to The Mirror, United have cooled their interest in Upamecano, who is also coveted by the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool, and will focus their efforts on prising £60million rated Kunde from Sevilla instead.

The 22-year-old joined the Spanish club from Bordeaux 18 months ago and has been regularly scouted by United this season.
Kounde impressed United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during last season’s Europa League semi-final and the Norwegian has seen enough to believe he is capable of representing Maguire’s long-term central defensive partner.
Solskjaer has been forced to rely on the likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe at various points throughout the current campaign but is looking for an upgrade on those options.
Real Madrid legend, Sergio Ramos, meanwhile is said to have his heart set on a move to the Premier League after rejecting a new contract to remain at the Bernabeu.
Ramos’s representatives are said to be targeting a move to Old Trafford, where his £200,000-a-week wages are unlikely to reprsent an obstacle to a potential deal.
