Paul Scholes names Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira as the toughest opponent he faced at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has selected former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira as the toughest midfielder he came up against during his time at Old Trafford.

Scholes won 10 Premier League titles before hanging up his boots in 2011, only to come out of retirement six months later to play for a further 18 months in which time he won another league title.

United battled Arsenal for supremacy during Scholes’ early career and the two teams shared the Premiership between 1996 and 2004, when Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho side broke up their dominance.

Patrick Vieira was named Arsenal captain after Tony Adams’ retirement in 2002 and Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign the France ace on three occasions before his move to Juventus in 2005.

The Frenchman was a constant thorn in United’s side over the period and Scholes has sung Vieira’s praises by admitting he was the toughest opponent he came up against in his career.

‘As a player I played against Vieira was brilliant,’ Scholes told the A Goal In One Podcast.

‘The way I played there was never an opponent I had to be fitter than, stronger than, more physical than. I was never that type of player, I was a passing player.

‘I could beat players with passing but Vieira he was just so awkward, so tall, so long, so leggy. Just when you thought you had it he would nick it over your head.

‘He was just so awkward to play against but what a really good player. He wasn’t just a holding player, he got himself forward, he could score goals, he could make goals. He had great energy.

‘Whenever people ask me who’s the best I played against [Okay maybe] not the best [ability wise] but the most awkward I played against it was Vieira.’

Paul Scholes names the one team Manchester United faced that rivalled Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona

Barcelona v Manchester United - UEFA Champions League Final

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes admits Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona side of 2011 is the finest side he faced during his career but says Real Madrid’s team of the early 2000s came close.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were beaten twice by Barcelona in the European Cup final, first in Rome in 2009 and then at Wembley in 2011.

Guardiola’s team are widely regarded as the finest club side in history and they’re in an elite group of clubs that have won the treble.

Manchester United are of course one of those clubs but Scholes could have added a third and fourth Champions League title if it wasn’t for Barcelona’s supremacy.

However, United were also denied

‘We were quite unlucky really. In any other era we might have won four, five, or six European Cups,’ Scholes told the A Goal In One Podcast.

But the teams that were about…you look at Guardiola’s Barcelona team – Jesus, how good were they?!

‘You could go right through the team. In midfield you had Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi. Henry on the left. Centre halves of Gerard Pique and Carlos Puyol. Just unreal. They’re without doubt the best team I’ve played against. They’re one of the best teams that’s ever been.

‘But If I go a bit further back and think of the Real Madrid side that we played against. We got absolutely battered in the Bernabeu one year. 3-1 it was in the first game but what a team that was. It’s not far away from that Barcelona team.

Fussball: Champions League 02/03 Real Madrid - Manchester United

‘They had the Brazilian Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Redondo was unreal, Raul, Roberto carlos, Hierro, Iker Casillas in goal, that was a team that was just ridiculous.

‘We came up against some ridiculous teams. We did alright against them but Barcelona just had that edge over that great Real Madrid team.’

United were looking to retain their crown in 2000 and earned a 0-0 draw away in the Bernabeu before hosting Real Madrid at Old Trafford in the second leg.

However, Raul and Redondo gave United a lesson by orchestrating a 3-2 win at the Theatre of Dreams to progress to the next round.

The clubs’ 2003 clash is perhaps better remembered as Real masterminded a 3-1 win against United at the Berbabeu before an enthralling second leg in Manchester.

Ronaldo received a standing ovation from the United crowd after a scintillating hat-trick and United ran out 4-3 victors, though they lost the tie 6-5 on aggregate.

Chelsea frontrunners ahead of Arsenal to secure Philippe Coutinho transfer

Chelsea have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona, reports say.

Barcelona have put the Brazilian playmaker up for sale this summer, but are also prepared to send Coutinho back out on loan if a club covers his £250,000 a week wages.

The Express claim Arsenal and Chelsea are vying for Coutinho’s signature, but the Blues are the frontrunners.

Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian has made it clear his client favours a return to the Premier League after producing his best football at Liverpool.

The Reds are not interested in a reunion and Coutinho has already turned down a move to Leicester City.

Arsenal were offered the chance to sign Coutinho on loan for £10million, but the Gunners turned down that proposal.

Barcelona’s offer was too pricey for Arsenal who are dealing with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite showing glimpses of his talent on loan at Bayern Munich this season, the German giants have passed on the option to make his deal permanent.

Frank Lampard, however, is eager to bring another attacking dimension to his squad and is a big fan of Coutinho.

Chelsea have been tracking Coutinho closely and have emerged as favourites to sign him after Arsenal rejected Barcelona’s opening offer and Bayern ruled themselves out of the running.

Asked about Coutinho’s future, Joorabchian said: ‘Everything is a possibility. After the Champions League game he played in England [against Chelsea] we had a long chat about it.

‘The Premier League is something that he has always enjoyed playing in, and loved playing in, and would probably love to come back and play in.

‘The question is what are going to be the financial conditions of all the clubs, including Barcelona and all the Premier League clubs at the end of this pandemic.’

Jesse Lingard reveals his four favourite moments at Manchester United

Jesse Lingard says helping Manchester United win the FA Cup was one of his four favourite moments at Manchester United.

England international Lingard scored an extra-time winner as United beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the 2016 FA Cup final.

Lingard spent more than a decade in Manchester United’s academy before making his first-team debut in 2011 under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 27-year-old has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the Red Devils and reflected on his favourite memories in an interview with MUTV.

He said: ‘My debut sticks out a lot [against Swansea City on the opening day of the 2014-15 season]. It was a great feeling.

You have to work hard to get into the first team and to play my debut stands out. Obviously, I got injured in that game so it stands out a bit more.

My first goal for the club was a great moment – at the Stretford End against West Brom.

Lingard has made more than 200 appearances for the Red Devils

It was like a half-volley from the edge of the box with the inside of my foot into the bottom corner. I can remember things very clearly like that, like they were yesterday.

There are those moments and obviously the trophies we’ve won as well. There are a lot of great memories – especially the FA Cup, but the European one [the Europa League in 2017] was brilliant as well.

That team was quite young and a lot of us had never won the FA Cup or a trophy. Wazza [Wayne Rooney] and Carrers [Michael Carrick] had never won it before that.

It was important for them to win it and important for us, as young lads, to win the first trophy for the club, to get that winning feeling.

‘When you do, you get that hunger to go on and win more trophies. It was a mixture of everything, the atmosphere was crazy that day at Wembley.

It couldn’t have been a better day for us.

Arsenal striker Alexander Lacazette not interested in Inter transfer

Alexander Lacazette has no intention of joining Inter Milan this summer, according to reports in France.

The Serie A side are one of several suitors for the Frenchman, who has two years left of his contract at Arsenal.

Atletico Madrid have also been credited with an interest but L’Equipe claim Inter have made an approach to sign Lacazette.

Inter are on the hunt for a proven goalscorer with star striker Lautaro Martinez poised for a big move in the near future.

Barcelona are believed to be the frontrunners to land Martinez and Inter had identified Lacazette, 29, as an excellent replacement option.

But Lacazette is not interested in the switch and has made that ‘clear’ to Inter.

Arsenal are facing an uncertain transfer window with Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang linked with rival clubs.

Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on Aubameyang, who was heavily linked with Barcelona last January.

The Gunners have had to scale back their transfer budget and wage bill due to the financial fall-out of the coronavirus pandemic.

Players like Lacazette and Aubameyang have already agreed to a 12.5 per cent wage cut.

Mikel Arteta has been told to focus on free agents and swap deals, but Arsenal should have more funds available if Aubameyang or Lacazette is sold.

Arsenal’s players are back in training ahead of the restart of the 2019/20 season and will headline the first night of action against Manchester City on 17 June.

‘It is our time to give’ – Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho excited about Premier League restart amid coronavirus pandemic

Jose Mourinho is excited about the return of Premier League football

Jose Mourinho says he is excited about the return of Premier League football and insists his Tottenham team ‘want to play’.

The 2019-20 Premier League season is set to resume on June 17 with Aston Villa facing Sheffield United and Manchester City playing Arsenal.

A full round of fixtures will then be played on the weekend of June 19-21, more than three months after the campaign was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There are 92 matches still to play and Mourinho’s Tottenham are currently eighth, seven points adrift of the top-four.

Concerns have been raised about restarting the season as the country continues to battle Covid-19 but Mourinho, speaking to Spurs TV, said: ‘I think now we can all feel that the first match is arriving.

Visit our live blog for the latest updates: Coronavirus news live

‘You look to other countries, Germany, they have already played matches, Portugal starts this weekend, Spain next weekend… football is coming everywhere.

‘We used to be the football that never stops, even in periods like Christmas – we are the league for the world and it feels a bit strange that we’re not playing but we are waiting patiently for the green light to go.

‘There was a moment we were all scared about when we start. The season is over? Next season will start September, October, November… who knows?

Tottenham have returned to training

‘But then less doubts, less doubts, less doubts and now it feels like it’s coming. We want to play.’

Tottenham have been buoyed by the return of several previously-injured players – including star striker Harry Kane – but Mourinho has offered a word of caution during what is essentially a pre-season period.

‘I think, football… we shouldn’t be selfish, we shouldn’t demand too much. It’s our time to give,’ Mourinho said.

‘For example, when players play Euros and World Cups, they barely have a holiday, they don’t have pre-season, they come direct from holiday and sometimes they train less than a week to play the first Premier League match.

‘At this moment, people are worried about trying to have what they never have. For example, speaking about pre-season injuries, there are pre-season injuries.

‘Everyone has pre-season injuries in normal seasons, so we cannot expect now not to have an injury here, an injury there.

‘We cannot ask for more than the authorities are giving us, which is the maximum security, and I think now it’s time just to play and to give people what people want.’

Manchester United are set to keep Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of January 2021.

The Nigerian striker is due to return to the Chinese Super League club in June as his initial loan agreement with United only runs until May 31.

Ighalo has been training with his United teammates at Carrington his week, and the club have been hopeful that a new agreement could be reached with Shanghai Shenhua for the 30-year-old to remain at Old Trafford until the end of the delayed season.

But Ighalo’s agent Atta Aneke, has confirmed to Norwegian outlet Nettavisen that United are now on the verge of agreeing a new deal with Shanghai Shenhua that will keep the striker with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side until next year.

The Chinese club had initially demanded £20 million from United for Ighalo to be signed permanently.

But United were unwilling to meet that asking price for a player who turns 31 in June.

Instead, United are now set to keep Ighalo on a temporary deal, which means he will miss the majority of the new Chinese Super League season which is due to start in June.

Solskjaer has been impressed with Ighalo’s impact and attitude since his arrival in the January transfer window, with the 30-year-old scoring four goals in eight appearances.

Speaking earlier this week, Solskjaer said he was hoping that Ighalo would remain at United.

‘The loan deal went until the end of May now, so obviously he’s supposed to be going back,’ said the United manager.

‘We’re in dialogue. They’ve been great towards us, his club, and allowed him to play for his dream club.

‘It’s been a dream for him and hopefully he can finish off what he started, hopefully with a trophy for us.

‘At the moment, nothing has been agreed. Their league is going to get started soon so we’re just waiting to see.’

Paul Ince hails Roy Keane and says Manchester United legend ‘made good players great’

Paul Ince has hailed Roy Keane and says the former Manchester United captain ‘made good players great’.

Keane established himself as one of United’s greatest captains in his 12-year career at Old Trafford, making close to 500 appearances for the Red Devils.

The Republic of Ireland legend won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League at Manchester United and Ince has paid tribute to his influence.

He told Mirror Sport: ‘When I first went to Manchester United, my idol was Bryan Robson, so I wanted to play with him. To get that last season – in 1992-93 – with Robson was amazing.

‘Then I was thinking, “Right, who else is going to come in and be my partner?”

‘And when Roy came, I was thinking, “Yeah, he’s only young, but I like him, I like the way he is”.

‘He was such a good leader of the team and one of those players who, when you thought that you were a good player, he could turn you into a great one.

Ince says Keane made 'good players great'

‘I like to think that I was a very good player, but he demanded more of you to make you a great player.’

Ince also offered an insight into his relationship with Keane, adding: ‘We kind of got it out of each other. We were very good friends off the pitch as well.

‘Some players have partnerships on the pitch but don’t really go out after.

‘Me and Keaney, after every game – whether we’d won, lost or drawn – we used to sit down in the changing room when everyone had gone and analyse our performances.

‘I’d be saying, “You need to be better at this, you didn’t do this and, defensively, you need to do that”.

‘Sometimes I’d be saying, “You were great at this”, and he’d be saying things to me and we’d kind of bounce off each other. That’s what made us so great.

‘As a player, he had everything – he could score, tackle and, of course, he was naughty at times. I say at times, but he was naughty quite a lot of times.

Keane helped Manchester United win seven Premier League titles

‘But his demands and high standards… he could talk the talk and walk the walk. He wanted everyone to play the way he played and we had a team that did that.

‘And when you have seven or eight players who demand that week in, week out, you win things.

‘Some people couldn’t stand up to his demands and that was a problem at times. If they couldn’t do it, it would frustrate him because they weren’t as good as he was.’

Javier Hernandez sums up the difference between playing for Man Utd and Real Madrid

Javier Hernandez believes the intensity and pressure that comes with representing Real Madrid is on another level to anything else he has experienced his career.

The Mexico international was a virtual unknown when he joined Manchester United from Guadalajara shortly after the 2010 World Cup but quickly established a reputation as a lethal goal poacher.

Hernandez thrived under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson and revelled in his role as a super-sub but when the legendary Scot retired in 2012, the player nickamed ‘Little Pea’ became disillusioned with the management style of David Moyes.

Real Madrid picked Hernandez up on loan at the start of the 2014/15 season and he played a key role in helping the Spanish giants reach the last four of the Champions League, scoring the decisive goal in the quarter final victory over Atletico.

Despite only spending one season in the Spanish capital, Hernandez saw enough to realise that the level of scrutiny is on another level compared to the pressure he felt during the course of his time at Old Trafford.

‘I think it’s the culture,’ he told Rio Ferdinand when asked to sum up the difference between the two clubs. ‘It’s just a description, it’s not something that I want to make less or make more any of the clubs.

‘It’s just a description, you know how the way of life in England is a little bit more calm, a little bit more close, a little bit more in that way. In Spain and Portugal it is more the Latino way. It’s the culture, it’s more open, they’re more exposed.

‘In United I never felt in the outside that it was completely as massive as it really was. But you know not many fans outside, not many press, not leaking news, you can walk a lot in Manchester, they respect you more.

‘In Spain they respect you but they are more like my country they want things from you they want the picture they want to grab you.’

Hector Bellerin will only sign new Arsenal deal if Mikel Arteta delivers on improvement

Hector Bellerin remains committed to Arsenal, but will reportedly only sign a new long-term deal if he sees sustained improvement in performances.

Mikel Arteta has been tasked with rejuvenating Arsenal and Bellerin is considered a vital figure in the squad as one of the longest serving players at the club.

Bellerin has repeatedly been linked with moves away from Arsenal with Serie A duo Inter Milan and Juventus the latest clubs to be eyeing up a move for the right-back.

ESPN claim Bellerin is not thinking about a move at the moment and has three years left on his deal.

Bellerin is completely onboard with Arteta’s vision for the future, but wants to see the targeted improvement on the pitch and in results.

Arsenal are ninth in the Premier League table ahead of the restart of the 2019/20 season and appear set to miss out on Champions League football again.

Bellerin penned a six-and-a-half year deal in 2016, but he will only agree to sign another long-term contract if Arteta delivers on his promises.

The first-team squad will get a 12.5 per cent pay cut if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

As Arsenal’s Professional Footballers’ Association representative, Bellerin played a key role in convincing the squad to take a wage deduction amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Bellerin is Arsenal’s second longest serving player having joined the Gunners youth academy as a 16-year-old in 2011.

Arsenal players are gearing up for a return to action on 17 June when they will take on Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho told to sell at Tottenham before signing Willian from Chelsea

Tottenham’s hierarchy have told Jose Mourinho that he must sell Erik Lamela if he wants to sign Willian from Chelsea, according to reports.

Willian’s contract expires this summer and Chelsea are currently refusing to offer the Brazil international the three-year deal he wants in order to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The 31-year-old has made no secret of his desire to work under Mourinho once again but a potential move to Tottenham has hit a stumbling block.

According to the Daily Star, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy believes Mourinho has enough wide options and will not sanction a move for Willian even though he will be available on a free transfer.

The report claims that Mourinho must now decide whether to sell one of his attacking players in order to accommodate Willian’s arrival, and Lamela is ‘most likely’ to leave with Spurs demanding £20 million for the Argentine.

Lamela, who was signed for £25.8m in 2013, has made 27 appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season.

Meanwhile, Willian insists he will remain at Chelsea until the end of the season but admits he is unlikely to sign a new deal with Frank Lampard’s side.

‘It’s a difficult situation because Chelsea offered me two years and they are not going to change what they offered. I said I wanted three more years,’ the winger told Brazilian outlet Esporte Interativo earlier this month.

‘The situation is difficult because of this. I really don’t know if it will be possible [to stay].

‘My goal is to continue working and focus on the remainder of the season, so that Chelsea can continue winning games.

‘I have a clear head and I’m focused for the rest of the season that we have left. I think it’s difficult [to stay]. Let’s see what happens.’
