Joachim Low and Ilkay Gundogan react to Timo Werner’s huge miss in Germany’s defeat to North Macedonia

Joachim Low was unable to hide his frustration over Timo Werner’s huge miss in Germany’s shock 2-1 defeat to North Macedonia on Wednesday evening.

Goran Pandev put North Macedonia in front shortly before half time but Germany pulled level through Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty in the 63rd minute.

With 10 minutes remaining, Werner then had the chance to give Germany the lead as Gundogan raced into North Macedonia’s penalty area and squared the ball to the Chelsea striker, who was around eight yards out.

But Werner completely mistimed his effort and his scuffed shot trickled wide of the goal.

North Macedonia then scored the winner in the 85th minute to secure a 2-1 upset, and the result means that Germany’s 35-game unbeaten run in World Cup qualifying, which dates back to their 5-1 defeat to England in 2001, is now over.

When asked about Werner’s miss after his side’s defeat in Duisburg, Low told RTL: ‘He must put that ball away, no question at all.

‘He has shown here he can score goals.

‘But he doesn’t hit the ball right with his left foot, if he makes a clean contact with the ball it’s a goal.’

Gundogan, however, showed sympathy towards the Chelsea striker over his miss.

‘I’m sorry for Timo,’ said the Manchester City midfielder.

‘He’s the one who wants to score the most.

‘We have no choice but to continue. We all know that such a defeat shouldn’t happen to us.

‘That is not our right. It cannot be explained either. But that’s the way it is, we have to accept that.’

Aidy Boothroyd explains what sparked Curtis Jones brawl after England U21s suffer early Euros exit

Curtis Jones involved in altercation with Croatia players after England U21s crash out of European Championships

Curtis Jones went from hero to villain as the England Under-21s crashed out of the European Championships at the group stage at the hands of Croatia and Aidy Boothroyd said his sending off was partly down to the side’s ‘highly emotive’ elimination.

England’s 2-1 victory was not enough to secure them a quarter-final place as they had to beat Group D rivals Croatia by two clear goals after losing their two previous games to Portugal and Switzerland.

The Young Lions had looked on course to progress against the odds as Eberechi Eze’s early penalty and Jones’ excellent second-half strike gave them a two-goal advantage with 15 minutes remaining at Slovenia’s Bonifika Stadium.

But Domagoj Bradaric beat Aaron Ramsdale with a stunning finish at the death to put Boothroyd’s men out of their misery after an immensely disappointing group-stage effort.

A bloodied Jones exploded at the final whistle as he was caught in the middle of Croatia’s wild celebrations, who went through as Group D runners-up behind Portugal.

Referee Harm Osmers showed the Liverpool midfielder a second yellow card for his part in the altercation and a crestfallen Boothroyd admitted ’emotions got a little bit high’ while discussing the incident at his post-match press conference.

‘I think what happened was there was a team jumping around, all their staff were on the pitch and celebrating in between one or two of our boys and I think it’s just got a bit fraught and emotions got a little bit high,’ he told reporters.

‘I’ve got to get to the bottom of the card. I’ve been unable to speak to the referee yet but I’ll find out what went on there.

‘I think it’s just one of those highly emotive situations where sometimes difficult things can happen and thankfully both sets of staff sorted it out.’

Boothroyd believes he’s still the right man for the job (Picture: Getty)

Boothroyd came under increasing scrutiny over the course of England’s tournament and a shortlist of potential managerial targets is already being drawn up, with the 50-year-old out of contract this summer.

However, the ex-Watford boss believes he’s still the right man for the job and will ‘keep going’ until told otherwise.

Pressed on whether he’s the right person to take the England U21s forward, Boothroyd replied: ‘I think so. The amount of players that have come through would suggest there’s a pathway working.

‘Our youngest players that come in the building know they’ve got a chance to play in the first team because of the way we’re structured.

‘Of course it’s important and we want to win but to produce players and win tournaments at the same time is very difficult.

‘I love being involved with these players, I really enjoy it which makes it even more difficult to come out and speak to you in the media and answer that question.

‘I’m going to keep going and then we’ll see what happens.’

Roy Keane hits out at ‘idiots’ who doubt Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount

Roy Keane has branded Mason Mount critics as 'idiots'
Roy Keane has branded Mason Mount critics as ‘idiots’ (ITV)

Roy Keane believes Mason Mount is an ‘outstanding player’ and has branded anyone who doubts the Chelsea midfielder an ‘idiot’.

The 22-year-old has been one of Chelsea’s top performers this season and has quickly established himself as a key player under Thomas Tuchel.

Mount extended his excellent form during the international break with England and now looks on course to secure his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championship this summer.

And former Manchester United captain Keane believes Mount has cemented his place as a starter for both club and country.

‘Well that is pretty important, that your manager likes you,’ Keane told ITV.

‘Doesn’t matter what people outside the game think, there are a lot of idiots out there.

‘Ultimately, I think the players pick the team and he has performed well enough for every manager to say, ‘listen you are going to be in my starting line up’.

‘Outstanding player. He wants to be an all-round midfielder.

‘I never hear anything negative about him off the pitch, he seems a brilliant young kid, he has gone out on loan he has done it the hard way.

‘He is a fantastic player.’

Roy Keane remaining tight-lipped on Celtic job after being quizzed by Rangers legend Ally McCoist

Former Rangers boss Ally McCoist has admitted he did his best to get the inside track on Celtic’s reported interest in Roy Keane…only to get a typically brash response from the Irishman.

Keane has been out of management for a decade, having left Ipswich in 2011. The former Manchester United midfielder has held assistant jobs at Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland since.

The 49-year-old has made no secret of his desire to return to management and he’s the current favourite to replace Neil Lennon at Parkhead, following his departure in February.

Keane spent half a season at Celtic Park during his final campaign as a player and is said to be keen on taking charge in the green half of Glasgow.

Not that the former United captain has stated that publicly, even though McCoist admits he tried to prise it out of the Irishman when he saw him at Wembley this week.

Rangers v Dumbarton - Scottish Championship

‘On Thursday night I was at Wembley and talking to Lee Dixon and he was excited about his game of golf, Wrighty [Ian Wright] is excited about his golf, Harmy [Steve Harmison] is playing golf,’ McCoist told TalkSPORT.

McCoist was then asked what excited Keane and the Scot replied: ‘He never really let out the bag if it was the Celtic manager’s job or not. I did my job superbly well.

‘He effectively ignored me, he just looked at me and said ‘yeah, I’m really going to tell you the answer’.

‘You know the world famous stare, I was on the receiving end of it at Wembley on Thursday night.

‘And I still don’t know if he’s got the Celtic job or not!’

Reports over the weekend claimed Keane would appoint Nicky Butt as his assistant should he take over in Glasgow.

Butt recently left Manchester United after serving as the club’s Head of Development for the last seven years.

The pair played together in the heart of United’s midfield, though it was Keane’s suspension for the 1999 Champions League final that gave Butt a chance to start in the biggest game of his career against Bayern Munich.

Sergio Aguero determined to prove Pep Guardiola wrong after confirming Manchester City exit

Sergio Aguero is determined to prove Pep Guardiola was wrong to sanction his exit from Manchester City, with the Argentine convinced that he has at least two years left at the top level.

Guardiola informed Aguero after training on Monday that the club would not be extending his deal, which expires this summer. Though the decision was not exactly a surprise to Aguero, the 32-year-old had not given up hope that his ten-year stay at the Etihad would be extended.

City informed Aguero of their decision at an untypically early stage of the season as the club felt they owed the striker the courtesy of giving him more time to find a new club.

But City’s decision was not an easy one and the club had previously intimated that a year-one extension was in the offing. Their decision not to offer one indicates Guardiola will sign a younger striker this summer as a replacement and that there is confidence of doing so.

City are interested in Dortmund forward Erling Haaland, though talk of a move for Harry Kane is wide off the mark. Guardiola is an admirer of the England captain but at 27, City see little value in smashing their transfer record to sign the Tottenham forward.

Guardiola’s determination to sign a new striker this summer means there was little need for the club to spell out Aguero’s future. The Argentine has started just five matches this term and he is unwilling to see his opportunities restricted further.

But that’s not to say that Aguero has lost any determination and Guardiola’s decision to pursue a new striker is said to have left the Argentine even more resolute in his desire to prove he can still compete at the top level.

Aguero had always planned on returning to Independiente upon his departure from the Etihad and had things ended on his terms, the Argentina striker would have likely returned to his boyhood club this summer.

But the nature of Aguero’s exit has left the striker convinced that he should stay in Europe, not least to prove to Guardiola that he was wrong to discard of him at the age of 32.

Barcelona were already in talks with Aguero’s representatives but the striker would likely have to accept a reduction on his £250,000-a-week wages to move to the Camp Nou.

Inter Milan have expressed an interest, while Mauricio Pochettino is an admirer of Aguero and would love to take him to Paris Saint-Germain this summer if the Ligue 1 giants are unable to sign Lionel Messi.

Aguero favours a move to Spain but he’s focused on the remainder of City’s season, where he’s determined to play a pivotal role in the club’s pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple.

The former Atletico Madrid forward feels factors outside of his control have contributed to a frustrating campaign and that his troubles have been too easily dismissed as injury-related.

Borussia Dortmund v Sevilla FC - UEFA Champions League Round Of 16 Leg Two
City are interested in Haaland (Photo by DAX Images/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

A knee injury at the end of last season ruled Aguero out of the majority of Project Restart and his record of missing 34 matches in the last nine months doesn’t make happy reading.

But Aguero will argue that bad luck played a major part in that record, with the Argentine twice having to self-isolate at the start of 2021. That contributed to Guardiola’s growing sense that he could not rely on Aguero, particularly at such a congested part of the season.

But the Argentine feels he is slowly regaining his fitness and will use the remainder of the campaign to get into prime condition before taking a decision on his future.

Aguero fought back in Guardiola’s first season in charge at the Etihad after the Spaniard dropped the forward for a Champions League clash against Barcelona. Guardiola was unhappy with his work-rate and commitment to making the type of runs that free up space for his attacking midfielders.

To his credit, Aguero took the criticism on board and changed his game in order to extend his stay at City by a further four years.

But, for a player that will forever known as the architect behind the most famous moment in Premier League history, the club have now called time on his career at the Etihad. Just don’t be surprised if Aguero has a major say between now and then.

Daniel James reveals ‘important’ advice from Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs

Daniel James has revealed the simple message from Manchester United legend and his Wales manager Ryan Giggs which he feels is the ‘best advice’ he has received over his career.

The 23-year-old joined the Red Devils from Swansea City in the summer of 2019 and was a regular feature in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in his first season, making 33 Premier League appearances.

James has found it difficult to nail down a regular starting berth in the current campaign but in recent months has been utilised more often for his rapid pace on the counter attack.

The winger has also impressed on the international stage for Wales under Giggs and scored a late header to earn his country a 1-0 win against Czech Republic in their 2022 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.

Speaking on the UTD Podcast, James admitted that Giggs’ simple instruction to just be himself has resonated with him throughout his career.

‘When people ask me what’s the best advice you’ve ever been given, it would probably be from him [Giggs]. It was just ‘be yourself’, James said.

‘I relate back to maybe the end of last season, I came away from that and tried to be like other players, I looked at other players and thought I need to be like him and be like that.

‘It was this season and I kind of thought I’m here for a reason and I looked back at loads of old clips of me being me and then looked at my new clips [and thought] I’m not doing that [anymore].

‘It was a reality to check for me in that you can take from him and you can take from different players around you but ultimately, you’re here because of what you do, and it goes back to what Giggsy said to me to just ‘be yourself’, that was so important.

‘I hadn’t played as much at the start of the season, and it was about do I want to accept this and just be in the background, but I was like no, I want to be here, I don’t want to be anywhere else,‘ he added.

I spoke to the gaffer about it, and I think it was before the Champions League game versus Istanbul [Basaksehir] and I said, ‘I’m ready to play’ and he said, ‘I can see that in training, I can see that in the way you’re putting yourself [in the frame], and you look back to you again’. I said, ‘I am and I’m ready to play’.

‘He played me in that game, I came on and scored and from then on, it was about what I can go and do now and how I can get myself back in this team.

‘It was just about doing everything I can in training every day.

Declan Rice has praised Jordan Henderson’s intensity and leadership skills in training and hopes the midfielder can return from injury to play in this summer’s Euros for England.

Henderson injured his groin playing for Liverpool last month which has forced him to miss the Three Lions’ fixtures over the March international break, and Gareth Southgate has cast doubt over his chances of playing at Euro 2020.

Domestically, the Liverpool captain has played a major role in his side’s success over recent seasons, leading them to Champions League glory in 2019 and the Premier League title a year later.

West Ham midfielder Rice, who has 14 caps for England, was effusive in his praise for the ‘world class’ Henderson and admitted his commitment on the training pitch is something he has ‘never really seen before’.

‘I think every time I’ve played with Jordan, or trained with him, just the intensity that he trains at, but while talking to the team and helping the team out, is just something that I’ve never really seen before,’ Rice told talkSPORT.

‘He’s a player that puts the squad puts the team before himself. He’s always wanting to help out.

‘I’m praying that he’s fit for the Euros and comes through this groin injury because if he wasn’t there, we’d miss him massively.

‘He’s a top player, world class player. He’s won the top trophies. He’s been at the big tournaments. He knows what to do.

‘On the pitch you feel his experience, his leadership.’

Paul Merson claims Arsenal move would be a ‘good choice’ for Sergio Aguero should he remain in England after Man City exit

Paul Merson says Arsenal would be a ‘good choice’ for Sergio Aguero’s next move after Manchester City should he choose to remain in the Premier League.

It was announced on Monday that the 32-year-old will leave the Etihad when his contract expires at the end of the season which will bring an end to his glittering 10-year spell at the club.

Over that period, Aguero has become the Premier League’s fourth-highest scorer of all time with 181 goals, helping City win four league titles.

Merson thinks Aguero would suit Arteta's style of football

Barcelona are the clear favourites to sign the striker, with Camp Nou said to be his first choice, while Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and a move back to his native Argentina have also been touted.

But should he choose to further his career in England’s top flight, Gunners hero Merson thinks his former club would be a good fit, due to their style of play under Mikel Arteta.

He told Sky Sports: ‘Will he stay in England or will his next move be abroad? If he stays in England, I think Arsenal would suit the style he would be looking for.

‘They’d be a good choice.

‘Mikel Arteta was at Manchester City and the way Arsenal play; they get around the box and they do create a lot of opportunities. Arsenal do tick that box for Aguero.

‘But if does he go abroad where the intensity is not as hard as it is in England? He could go somewhere with a different climate and where the games are not as intense as they are in the Premier League.

‘That could help with his injury problems as he moves into the latter stages of his career. It’s an important move for Aguero as he moves into the final stage of a glittering career.’

‘There won’t be many clubs who wouldn’t want a player of Aguero’s stature,’ Merson added.

‘However, clubs will be looking at his injury record and at their wage bills. It will also come down to Aguero too because he’ll have to be in a team that creates chances.

‘If you are not getting in and around the opponent’s penalty area too often, then it would be difficult to have Aguero in your team.

‘He’s not getting the ball on the halfway line and beating three players anymore.

‘That’s not his game anymore. We’ve seen some special goals from him where he’s scored from nothing, but he’s had injuries and is getting on a bit, so I don’t see that happening too often anymore.

‘It’s an important decision for him picking who he plays for next season.’

Ronald Koeman wants Barcelona to snub Sergio Aguero for former Man Utd star

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman would prefer the club to sign Memphis Depay over Sergio Aguero this summer.

Aguero is set to end his 10-year stay at Manchester City this summer with City informing the striker this week he will not be offered a new deal.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly all made offers for the Argentine. However, Aguero is keen to join Barcelona and return to La Liga a decade on from leaving Atletico Madrid.

Marca report the Barcelona hierarchy is keen on the move with Aguero set to arrive on a free transfer.

Aguero is also keen to link up with countryman Lionel Messi and Barca feel the arrival of the Man City star could help convince the club captain extend his stay at the Camp Nou beyond the summer.

There are concerns however over Aguero’s salary demands and his recent injury record.

Head coach Koeman would also prefer the club to bring in fellow Dutchman Depay, who is also set to become available on a free transfer with his current deal with Lyon expiring.

Barcelona have been linked with the former Manchester United forward throughout the season after they were unable to finance a move last summer.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta meanwhile has earmarked Erling Haaland as a priority signing this summer.

Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham return to Chelsea training ahead of West Brom clash

Thiago Silva
Silva has been ruled out since early February (Picture: Getty)

Thiago Silva has returned to training with Chelsea in a boost for Thomas Tuchel ahead of the Premier League run-in.

Silva has not featured since the 1-0 victory over Tottenham on 4 February, with a troublesome thigh injury keeping him on the sidelines. The former PSG star was named among the subs against Everton earlier this month but a minor setback delayed his return.

Chelsea have not struggled in the Brazilian’s absence and have conceded just two goals in the 14 games since Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge at the end of January.

Silva however appears set to return for a crucial period of the season, pictured back on the training pitch on Tuesday and sending a hopeful message to Blues fans on Instagram.

‘Happy to be back doing what I love! May God bless our new beginnings,’ he wrote.

Chelsea take on West Brom as the Premier League returns this weekend.

Another Chelsea star in contention to return is Tammy Abraham, who was also back in training this week.

The striker struggled to hold down a first-team role during Tuchel’s first month in charge at west London but has also been struggling with an ankle problem.

Chelsea reclaimed a place in the Premier League top four prior to the international break and are now just six points behind second place Manchester United.

Manchester City overtake Manchester United in race to sign Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish

Burnley v Aston Villa - Premier League
Jack Grealish is a target for Manchester United and Manchester City (Photo by James Gill – Danehouse/Getty Images)

Manchester City’s interest in Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has intensified in recent weeks, with Pep Guardiola keen on beating Manchester United to the playmaker’s signature.

Grealish was keen on leaving Villa Park last summer as United made a move for the 25-year-old but the midfielder ended up signing a new deal with his boyhood club after the Red Devils were put off by a £75million asking price.

But Villa’s valuation of the England international has soared since, with Grealish taking his game up another level this season for club and country.

United retain their interest in Grealish but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priorities are elsewhere, as the Red Devils have more pressing issues in defence and attack.

That’s left the door open for City, given Guardiola’s side are one of the few clubs in world football that could afford to sign Grealish and the Daily Mail claim City’s interest has ramped up in recent weeks.

Manchester United v Aston Villa - Premier League

Villa’s form this term means Grealish could be minded to stay in Birmingham, particularly as Dean Smith’s side still have an outside chance of a European finish this term.

But the chance to join City would likely be too difficult to turn down for Grealish, who has gone on record several times with his admiration for Kevin De Bruyne.

Grealish returned to full training this week and is set to face Fulham this weekend.

The playmaker has been out of action for the last six weeks and Villa have just one of their six matches in his absence, scoring just three times.
