Graeme Souness has bemoaned the lack of leaders and role models at fallen Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United.
Arsenal and United – two of the most successful English clubs in history – are currently ninth and 11th respectively in the Premier League table.
Both clubs missed out on the top-four last season and look set to endure a similar fate this term as they attempt to move above the likes of Burnley, Sheffield United and Wolves.
Arsenal’s demise cost Unai Emery his job at the Emirates on Friday and the pressure is mounting on struggling Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Souness has delivered a damning assessment of both squads and says the lack of role models is a reason for their current struggles.
He told The Times: ‘You’re left looking at the dressing rooms and asking, “Where are the men?”
‘That’s what Emery required in his hour of need, but he didn’t have it at his disposal. It’s the same at Manchester United.
‘If you’re a young player in those teams, it’s difficult to imagine looking at one of your teammates and thinking, “I want to be him in ten years’ time.”
‘Matteo Guendouzi is an example of that. To his credit, the 20-year-old French midfielder takes the ball in any situation, whether it’s near his own goalmouth or in the attacking third, whether he’s having a good game or an indifferent one.
‘But he doesn’t understand the game yet. He plays like he’s still in the playground.
‘He needs to be taught the position properly, his decision-making is still naive. He needs some serious coaching.’
Arsenal face Norwich City on Sunday and, after Emery’s sacking, the former Gunner Freddie Ljungberg will take charge of the team as caretaker boss.
On the same day, Solskjaer’s Manchester United face relegation-battlers Aston Villa.

The Arsenal board have identified Mikel Arteta as their top target to replace sacked manager Unai Emery, according to reports.
Struggling Arsenal are searching for a new manager after pulling the plug on Emery’s underwhelming 18-month reign in north London.
Emery arrived at the Emirates with a fine reputation, having won the Ligue 1 title at PSG and three Europa Leagues at Sevilla, but ultimately failed and lost his job on Friday morning.
While Freddie Ljungberg has been placed in temporary charge of the Gunners, the Arsenal board have been drawing up a shortlist of managers to succeed Emery on a full-time basis.
Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers, Max Allegri, Patrick Vieira and Nuno Espirito Santo have all been linked with the vacant position at the Emirates but Arsenal have made Arteta their top target.
Mirror Sport say Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City assistant Arteta has emerged as Arsenal’s first-choice target, with the Gunners hoping to replace one Spanish manager with another.
Arteta is believed to be keen on the job, having enjoyed a spell at Arsenal as a player, while Guardiola is open to allowing his deputy to leave to further his career.
The City coach was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal after Arsene Wenger’s departure in 2018 but former chief executive Ivan Gazidis favoured Emery.
While losing Arteta midway through the season would not be ideal, the Mirror claim Guardiola has an ideal replacement waiting in the wings in Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Asked about the speculation linking Arteta with a move to Arsenal, Guardiola said last week: ‘Of course he will be a manager sooner or later.
‘If I was in his position, as an assistant coach as young as he is, always we will have that. Now we are going to finish this season and in the future I don’t know what is going to happen.’
Arsenal director Josh Kroenke, meanwhile, says the process of replacing Emery is ‘underway’ but insists the club will take their time due to their faith in Ljungberg.
‘Our process is already underway,’ he said on Saturday. ‘It’s going to be led by Raul, Vinai, Edu and Huss here internally.
‘I look forward to getting with them and working closely with them throughout this process.
‘Because of our confidence in Freddie we’re very fortunate that we’re going to be entering into our process and doing a thorough search and it’s about finding the right candidate, it’s not about finding the first candidate.’

Jermaine Jenas has urged Mauricio Pochettino to snub a move to Arsenal and wait for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked at Manchester United.
Arsenal have identified former Tottenham manager Pochettino as a contender to take over from Unai Emery after the Spaniard’s dismal 18-month reign came to an end on Friday.
Pochettino took Spurs to the Champions League final last term but paid the price for a shocking run of form this season as he lost his job and was replaced by Jose Mourinho.
The Argentine has been strongly linked with a move to Spurs’ north London rivals since Emery’s sacking but Jenas says he is in ‘another bracket’ to Arsenal.
‘Arsenal’s a huge football club and I’m sure the wages would be great for Mauricio,’ Jenas told BT Sport. ‘I put myself in his shoes though and would say his stock is far higher than that personally.
‘I think the job he did at Tottenham puts him in another bracket.
‘I think if I was Mauricio I’d be sat there going well I’ll have six months off to recuperate and rest as I have been working non-stop for six years.
‘Come the end of the season there’s a good chance that Manchester United might ring the phone, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid.’
Pochettino is a hugely popular figure at Tottenham and spoke out for the first time since being sacked on Thursday.
In a statement, he said: ‘I would like to thank Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy for giving me the opportunity to be part of Tottenham Hotspur’s history.
‘I would like to thank also everyone I met at Tottenham, all the club staff and the football players during these five and a half years.
‘Finally I would like to give a special mention to the fans who make this club so great with their fantastic support.
‘I gave the best of me to accomplish the objectives I was asked for in our first meeting. There were equally tough challenges as exciting success.
‘Best wishes for the future, I am sure we will cross paths again.’

Paul Merson has named Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers and Nuno Espirito Santo as three top candidates to replace Unai Emery at Arsenal.
The Gunners are searching for a new manager after parting ways with former PSG and Sevilla boss Emery on Friday.
Much was expected of Emery before his arrival in north London but he leaves the club with Arsenal sitting eighth in the Premier League and without a win in seven matches.
Former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg has been placed in temporary charge of Arsenal but Merson believes either Pochettino, Rodgers or Nuno should get the job on a full-time basis.
Pochettino is one of the most respected managers in Europe and largely impressed at Tottenham before his surprise sacking earlier in the month.
Former Liverpool and Celtic boss Rodgers is working wonders at Leicester City and Nuno is doing an equally impressive job at Wolves.
‘Arsenal should go for Mauricio Pochettino or Brendan Rodgers now they’ve finally put Unai Emery out of his misery,’ Merson told Starsport.
‘I’m all for Rodgers getting the job. He’s a proven coach. He improves players – and these players need to be improved!
‘I like Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves as well. And Pochettino is a top manager who is out of work and available. He might be tempted.
‘They just have to make sure they get this appointment right because it’s a crucial decision that will decide Arsenal’s future.
‘But who are the football people making that decision? Where are they are? That’s what worries me. Can you trust them?
‘Emery is probably relieved. He looked lost. I don’t think he knew what he was doing. I think he had lost confidence and was making bad decisions.’

Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has questioned whether Harry Maguire has improved Manchester United since his £80million transfer move from Leicester City.
England international Maguire, 26, became the most expensive defender in history when he completed a lucrative and high-profile move to Old Trafford in July.
Maguire is rated as one of the best defenders in the Premier League but Nicholas has questioned his contributions for Manchester United this season.
Despite spending almost £150m last summer, the Red Devils have made a underwhelming start to the 2019-20 campaign and sit 11th in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa.
Asked about United’s struggles, Arsenal hero Nicholas told Sky Sports: ‘What has Harry Maguire done since he came in? Has he helped stabilise [the team]? Is there a decent centre-back partnership there?
‘You could see that Manchester United would struggle against Sheffield United because they missed the physical presence of Scott McTominay.
‘That’s how low United have fallen…
‘I mention Maguire because they spent a fortune on him. They can’t find a partner for him. They’re all over the place at the moment.’
Manchester United could only draw 3-3 with Premier League new-boys Sheffield United last weekend and suffered a defeat to Astana in the Europa League on Thursday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been without a number of key first-team players in recent weeks but provided a positive injury update ahead of the clash with Villa.
‘We’ve got players coming back,’ he said. ‘We’ve suffered from injuries badly and now we’re getting more and more back that will only help us.’
Villa have taken 14 points from their first 13 Premier League matches this season and are currently three points above the relegation zone.
Ahead of their trip to Old Trafford, manager Dean Smith said: ‘You’re playing against top talent in this league and if you stop concentrating you’ll struggle.’

Robert Pires has backed Freddie Ljungberg to become the permanent Arsenal manager following Unai Emery’s departure.
Ljungberg, who won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups at Arsenal as a player, was named interim manager at the Emirates on Friday after Emery sacked.
Emery took Arsenal to the Europa League final last season but results had drastically dipped this term and the Spaniard leaves north London with the team just ninth in the Premier League.
Arsenal are willing to take their time before appointing Emery’s permanent successor, with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Max Allegri, Patrick Vieira and Brendan Rodgers being linked with the job.
But Arsenal legend Pires insists Ljungberg is ‘capable of staying’ at Arsenal as their full-time boss and has predicted the style of football he will attempt to produce.
‘When he [Ljungberg] was a player, he liked to speak up, he always had something to say, especially when we were in bad moments,’ Pires said.
‘I think that he is capable of taking on the challenge. He knows that from tomorrow onwards it is going to be difficult, away to Norwich.
‘Now he is going to try to implement his style of football, his philosophy, which is by the way the philosophy that he learnt when he was an Arsenal player.
‘And after that, a manager purely depends on his players. He is capable of staying.
‘What I think is good as well is that football needs new faces, freshness.
‘Freddie, a bit like, Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard, are good coaches and I hope for Freddie that he stays in that role for as long as possible.’
Speaking about his new role at Arsenal for the first time, Ljungberg said: ‘It’s a great, great honour.
‘I want to do as well as I can for this fantastic club and that’s what I feel today. I feel excitement and I’ll try to do a good job.’
Asked whether he could become Arsenal’s permanent manager, Ljungberg added: ‘For the moment it’s for the future of the football club.
‘I’m here to help the club as much as I possibly can and try to get a good atmosphere around the club and with the fans and that’s what I’m focusing on at the moment and then we’ll see.’

Virgil van Dijk has issued a rallying cry to his Liverpool team-mates ahead of the Merseyside derby against Everton.
Premier League leaders Liverpool welcome arch-rivals Everton to Anfield on Wednesday evening.
Jurgen Klopp’s side defeated Brighton on Saturday to move further clear at the top of the Premier League, while Everton will look to ease the pressure on Marco Silva against in-form Leicester City on Sunday.

Van Dijk scored a brace in Liverpool’s victory over Brighton and wasted no time before turning his attentions to the upcoming Merseyside derby.
‘I’m looking forward to every game and obviously Wednesday is going to be a good one,’ Van Dijk said. ‘Everyone is looking forward to that.
‘What we have to do now is make sure we’re more than 100 per cent on Wednesday. Luckily, we have some time to recover and make sure we’re ready.’
Van Dijk’s first-half brace put Liverpool in control against Brighton but the visitors threatened to mount a comeback after goalkeeper Alisson was sent off for deliberate handball.
Brighton pulled a goal back immediately after Alisson was dismissed but the hosts held on to clinch an important victory.
Van Dijk added: ‘Obviously we’re disappointed with the way we ended the game. We conceded a bit of a strange free-kick, the red card for Alisson, and we should have done better.
‘But it’s not easy to play every couple of days and make sure we are more than 100 per cent.
‘But we try to do that. The beginning of the first half was good, towards the end of the first half I think we should have done better.
‘But it’s something we have to look at and try to improve. They are a very good side, you have to give them credit.
‘They played well, brave and tried to get out of our press and at times it worked. So you have to give them credit. But we wanted the three points and got them.
‘We have to show character, we have to fight. It was not an easy game, especially at the end. We had to dig deep and we did.’

David de Gea admitted there was a lack of quality at Manchester United, but denied there was a lack of effort in the squad.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side languish in ninth in the Premier League table and a young Red Devils side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Europa League minnows Astana on Thursday night.
United are aiming to bounce back with a home fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday and De Gea assured fans the team was working hard to improve.
‘The team is what it is, and results are what they have been recently,’ De Gea told Sky Sports.
‘We need to win four or five games in a row to be at the top, but at the moment the team is not playing so well.
‘We’re giving it everything, we’re trying to get those big wins that can put us high up in the table, but the truth is at the moment we’re not consistent enough, there’s much to train and much to improve.
‘I don’t think it’s through any lack of effort, the boys are leaving everything out on the field in training and games.
‘You could point maybe to a lack of quality in certain areas, but certainly not a lack of fight.’
United have mustered just four wins in the league this season and the Red Devils sit nine points off fourth place.
Villa are desperate to avoid relegation this season, but sit just four points above the drop zone.
