The 20 Premier League clubs have just a handful of hours left to complete their transfer business, with the January transfer window set to close at tonight’s 11pm deadline.

As was expected, clubs have been busy over the course of the month with over £500m splashed out on new winter signings across the league.

Liverpool beat Manchester United to the signing of Dutch forward Cody Gakpo, whilst Arsenal boosted their Premier League title bid with the capture of Leandro Trossard from Brighton.

Meanwhile, Chelsea dramatically hijacked Arsenal’s move for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhailo Mudryk after he was seemingly all set for a switch to the Emirates.

Here are the completed ins and outs for Premier League clubs in the January transfer window 2023.

Every deal is a permanent transfer unless otherwise stated.

A January like no other - the WSL transfer window that changed women's football

It was a January window like no other in the Women's Super League as spending reached a new level, records were broken and players were headline news.

Manchester United were offered and rejected four players before deciding on Marcel Sabitzer

Manchester United were offered a host of players to replace Christian Eriksen before deciding on Marcel Sabitzer as the player they wanted to sign, according to reports.

The Red Devils were dealt a massive injury blow this week with Eriksen ruled out of action until the end of April at the earliest following a bad tackle from Reading’s Andy Carroll in the FA Cup.

United moved quickly to secure a short-term replacement and have agreed a loan deal with Bayern Munich for Sabitzer, who is currently flying to Manchester to complete the move.

However, Sky Sports News claim United were inundated with approaches after news of Eriksen’s injury emerged and turned down the possibility of signing four big-name players.

Perhaps the most surprising of the quartet was former Real Madrid and Sevilla playmaker Isco, who is currently a free agent.

The 30-year-old is without a club after cutting ties with Sevilla in December following a falling out with sporting director Monchi and had been in talks with Bundesliga surprise package Union Berlin – though the move collapsed on Tuesday.

Manager Oliver Ruhnert told BILD: ‘We would have liked to see Isco with us, but we have our limits. These were exceeded today, contrary to previous agreements, which is why the transfer will not take place.’

After the move to Union Berlin fell through, Isco’s representatives are believed to have offered his services to United – though they had little interest in a player whose form has dropped off majorly.

Another Spaniard was also put forward to United as a possible solution to their midfield issues, with Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez touted as a potential option.

The 28-year-old has only been used sparingly this season, starting just six times in La Liga, and of course spent last season on loan at Chelsea in what was a very underwhelming spell in England.

Another Atletico player, Yannick Carrasco, was also offered to United, though he did not fit the mould of player Erik ten Hag was looking for.

The United manager is keen to sign an intelligent, attacking midfielder capable of playing the same roles in the side as Eriksen has done so well, which is why Sabitzer ticked so many boxes.

The fourth player United were offered – and rejected – was Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, who is still just 24 despite years of being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Arsenal miss out on deadline day move for Real Valladolid star Ivan Fresneda

Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund had reportedly agreed a fee of £13m for the player (Picture: Getty)

Arsenal have missed out on a deadline day move for Real Valladolid star Ivan Fresneda, according to reports.

Both the Gunners and German club Borussia Dortmund had reportedly agreed a fee of £13m with the La Liga side for the 18-year-old right-back.

Fresneda has become a regular for Valladolid this season with his performances attracting the attention of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta as well as Dortmund, who believed they could have offered a more direct route in the first-team.

Both sides suffered a setback recently when Fresneda indicated that he will be staying at Valladolid – although he may have been referencing the fact that he would have be loaned back to the club for the remainder of the 2022-23 season – which is a clause the Spaniards were eager to include if they agreed to a sale.

Earlier on deadline day, it had been thought that a late deal was still possible, but fresh reports now indicate that the race for Fresneda is now over with Valladolid rejecting a loan bid and the player more likely to leave in the summer instead.

Arsenal had been looking for cover at right-back with Cedric Soares heavily linked with a move to Fulham – although that deal may now also fall through over the player’s wage demands.

Ben White has regularly been deployed down the right this season by Arsenal and they also have Takehiro Tomiyasu in their ranks.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have made two signings this month to strengthen their title bid with the Gunners five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand over second-placed Manchester City.

Jakub Kiwior sealed his move to the Emirates from Italian side Spezia in a deal worth £20m.

The north London club also brought in Leandro Trossard in a £27m deal from Brighton and are expected to secure the arrival of Jorginho from Chelsea.

Chris Sutton slams Moises Caicedo and labels his behaviour ‘downright stupid’

Chris Sutton has slammed Arsenal target Moises Caicedo and has labelled the Brighton star’s behaviour as ‘downright stupid’.

Arsenal are preparing a £75m offer for Ecuador international midfielder Caicedo before the January transfer window closes on Tuesday, according to reports, in what is their third approach for the player.

In a surprise statement on Friday evening, Caicedo made it clear to Brighton that he wants to join the Gunners.

‘I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful,’ he said in a statement.

‘The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity.’

Sutton has now offered his opinion on the transfer saga as he told the Daily Mail: ‘Moises Caicedo is either being very badly advised or he’s an idiot.

‘That social media post was downright stupid. He’s seen what Leandro Trossard did to get to Arsenal and he’s copying him.

‘But Brighton have every right to be standing firm on their £80m valuation.’

Arsenal have already had two bids rejected for Caicedo, the most recent of which was £65m plus an additional £5m in add-ons.

The north London club have made him their priority target in the closing stages of the January transfer window and their need to recruit a new central midfielder has been heightened following the injury to Mohamed Elneny.

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has already brought in fellow Seagulls star Leandro Trossard in a £27m deal.

Arsenal also signed Poland international defender Jakub Kiwior for £20m as he arrived from Italian side Spezia.

The Gunners are attempting to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004 and are currently five points clear of second-placed Manchester City with a game in hand at the top of the table.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire rejects Inter Milan loan move

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has rejected a loan move to Inter Milan, according to reports.

Maguire has struggled for game time at Old Trafford since the arrival of Dutch manager Erik ten Hag in the summer.

The 29-year-old centre-back, a key player for England, has made just 16 appearances this term and has knocked up only 801 minutes on the pitch.

According to the Daily Star, Maguire had the opportunity to join Italian side Inter Milan on loan in the January transfer window, but the defender snubbed their approach.

Maguire is under contract until 2025, with the option of a further year, but he will look to leave United in the summer if cannot regain his place in the side.

Ten Hag has mostly favoured the centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez but gave Maguire a full 90 minutes in the 3-1 victory over Championship side Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Maguire, who has made a total of 160 appearances for United since making his £80m move from Leicester City in 2019, recently spoke about his future at the club and said: ‘I’m 29 and haven’t really been in this position in my career before.

‘I don’t want to get used to it, but it is part and parcel of football. I’m pushing, training well, and when chance comes, I need to take it.’

Maguire, who was also linked with a loan move to West Ham, has been ‘disrespected’ by Ten Hag and should leave United, according to Rio Ferdinand.

‘If you’re him you have to leave now,’ Ferdinand said of Maguire on Vibe With Five earlier this month.

‘Luke Shaw [was] playing centre-back instead of him. That’s like me going back after the World Cup, playing well, everyone saying he’s done really well, and Patrice Evra is playing centre-back.

‘I’d want to strangle Patrice! I would’ve smashed Patrice in training to make sure he’s not available, and I’d be going to the manager and saying, ‘are you taking the piss out of me, boss?’. I’d have walked straight into the manager’s office and said, ‘you’re disrespecting me’.

‘Harry Maguire’s got to move. I think he stays because of the games and they can’t get someone else in. He plays in the cup games.’

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi refuses to blame Fabinho after Evan Ferguson leaves stadium on crutches following horror challenge

Evan Ferguson

Brighton face a nervous wait to learn the extent of Evan Ferguson’s injury after the horror challenge from Liverpool midfielder Fabinho that saw him leave the stadium on crutches.

The Seagulls booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Kaoru Mitoma scoring a stunning injury time winner at the Amex Stadium.

18-year-old striker Ferguson was left in agony after a nasty challenge from Fabinho on 85 minutes, with the Brazilian midfielder raking his studs down the back of the striker’s right heel.

Fabinho was shown a yellow card for the challenge by referee David Coote with VAR reviewing the incident and deciding against upgrading it to a red.

Ferguson received treatment on the pitch before being replaced  by Deniz Undav with the Irish youngster later seen leaving the stadium on crutches.

De Zerbi and Brighton are hoping Ferguson has avoided an ‘important’ injury but refused to condemn Fabinho for the challenge, insisting it was an ‘accident’ from the Liverpool star.

‘We are sorry for him [Ferguson],’ De Zerbi told beIN Sports.

‘The injury, we don’t know yet, but we will see in the next days and we hope for him and for the club that it will not be so important an injury.’

Asked if Fabinho was lucky to only receive a yellow card, he added: ‘No, I think Fabinho is a quality player. It can happen on the pitch, these accidents.’

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray was convinced it was a red card challenge, insisting even Fabinho himself knew he should have been sent off as a result.

‘For me that’s a match changing incident so it needs to be reviewed,’ said Murray on ITV.

‘I can’t understand how the VAR referee can say that isn’t a red/ It is a terrible challenge.

‘The player knows it’s a red, he is waiting to be sent off and somehow remains on the field. That is me as a professional footballer, not as an ex-Brighton player.’

Jurgen Klopp has responded to Andy Robertson claiming Liverpool are getting worse after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at the Amex Stadium, Robertson told ITV: ‘It’s bitterly disappointing.

‘We were more competitive than two weeks ago but that didn’t take much. We created chances and were more compact but at the end of the day we are out of the cup.

‘At a club like Liverpool, fans expect a lot and to lose with the last kick of the ball it’s disappointing. We need to start winning games. It’s easy to say but harder to fix.

‘This season has been nowhere near good enough. At the start of the year, we wanted a fresh start but that hasn’t happened. We’ve been worse. In the league, we haven’t been good enough and now we’re out of both cups now.

‘You can’t put your finger on one thing, it’s more than that. You can tell we’re not as confident in front of goal and in defence we are a wee bit open. We had two clean sheets coming into today but then go and concede two goals.

‘We need to get the confidence back, it’s easier said than done, and that’s how we will get results.

‘We need to do it quick and we’re not. That it doesn’t help the fans, I’m sorry for them and the way we are putting on a show. We let them down again.’

Asked about Robertson’s comments, Klopp said: ‘It’s not 100 per cent true but it’s not 100 per cent wrong.

‘Of course we wanted a new start, that was clear after the World Cup. So far it hasn’t happened properly, that’s true.

‘That means we have to keep working, there’s nothing else you can do. There were good performances today as well, good moments which we need to build on.’

Klopp added: ‘We came here after a game a few weeks ago when we weren’t even close to ourselves.

‘Today we played a better game but we concede two goals from set-pieces and that is not allowed in any way.

‘It doesn’t feel great. In time we might see the positives but we wanted to get the next round. Congratulations to Brighton.’

Erik ten Hag explains decision to start Harry Maguire for Manchester United vs Reading

Erik ten Hag explained his decision to give Harry Maguire a rare start in Manchester United’s FA Cup clash against Reading.

The Red Devils hosted the Royals on Saturday night with a place in the fifth round at stake.

Having beaten Nottingham Forest 3-0 in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg last Wednesday, Ten Hag made just one change from that victory, with captain Maguire coming in in place of Lisandro Martinez.

The centre-back has struggled for game time this season, with his new manager preferring Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and even Luke Shaw at centre-back.

Discussing his team selection ahead of the game Ten Hag told ITV: ‘Harry is back. I already said yesterday he was ill when he returned from the World Cup, otherwise he should have played a couple of games.

‘But you have to play to get back into the rhythm. He did already play some games, but I think this is a good game for him to return, especially when you see the height for the opponent.

‘He’s had some chances but every player has to pick their chances.

‘He’s training very well, he’s training very dominant and that’s what I want to see from him as a leader like he is, he’s the captain, so I have big expectations of him today.’

‘It’s not just about Harry, everyone has to match those expectations. We want to achieve this season so we need a squad, so every player needs to give all they have.’

The decision to start Maguire had the approval of United legend Roy Keane who told ITV: ‘It’s a good game for him obviously. The manager’s gone strong and it’s good to see Harry getting an opportunity.

‘He must be frustrated obviously, he came here a few years ago for a big fee. He’s had his critics – me being one of them – but this is nice for him, an important game, an FA Cup match, they’ll want to win it and it’s a great opportunity for him.

‘We’ve seen over the years a lot of players can train well, it’s what you do on a match day. Harry’s playing for his future at the club, no doubt about that.’

Patrice Evra tips Marcus Rashford to become Manchester United captain

Patrice Evra has urged Erik ten Hag to give Marcus Rashford whatever contract he wants, tipping the forward to become Manchester United captain.

Rashford has been United’s star player this season, with 18 goals and six assists in 29 appearances so far.

The England international has been in especially sensational form since the World Cup, scoring 10 in 10 games and he could yet add to that tally on Saturday night when the Red Devils host Reading in the FA Cup.

Much talk is now turning to his future, with the 25-year-old’s contract up in just 18 months time, with Ten Hag publicly and privately urging his player to sign a new long term deal amid reported interest from PSG.

United legend Evra hopes that Rashford stays at Old Trafford, claiming that the talisman has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney and become club captain.

‘Every week Marcus Rashford is performing. I have to say congratulations to him, I’m really proud of him,’ the former defender told Betfair.

‘He’s smiling and that’s the key. I’ve always said that he will become the captain of the club one day.’

‘For Ten Hag, Rashford is his main man. His project, his ambition, he’s still young, he’s fresh and you can see that he is the priority for Ten Hag and that’s why he’s urging Rashford to sign a new deal with United.

‘He’s got that Mancunian mentality and now he’s fixed his happiness.
For me, the biggest priority for Man United right now is to keep that kid happy. So, give him the contract he wants because he’s the future of the club. It’s simple.

‘He’s proved himself this season, he’s in the form of his life, but we’ve always known that he can perform like that. Keep him happy and build a team around him. That’s what I’d be doing if I was United.’

The future of United’s captaincy is up in the air at the moment, given the limited game time that skipper Harry Maguire is getting, with Bruno Fernandes wearing the armband in his absence.

Rashford is of course United born and bred, having scored 111 goals in 332 games since his first-team debut in 2016.

Roy Keane unimpressed with Mikel Arteta’s team selection for Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Man City

Roy Keane was not impressed by Mikel Arteta’s decision to make six changes for Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Manchester City on Friday night, saying it was a huge gamble that would likely backfire.

There were regular first team players in the starting XI, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey playing, but Leandro Trossard and Fabio Vieira came in, while the defence was much-changed.

Matt Turner started in goal, behind a back four of Tomehiro Tomiyasu, Rob Holding, Gabriel and Kieran Tierney.

With Pep Guardiola fielding a near-full strength side, Keane thought it was too much of a gamble from the Arsenal boss, especially as they don’t play again until a week on Saturday at Everton in the Premier League.

‘It’s a huge gamble to make so many changes, particularly in the defensive position, the goalkeepers,’ Keane said on ITV.

‘We thought he’d make one or two, but that’s such a gamble to make so many changes at the back, especially with the attacking players Man City have got.”

‘The priority for Arsenal – because they’ve had such a great start – is of course the league. But I just think to make so many changes defensively, people talking about the priorities, but it’s still January. They’ve got no midweek game coming up.

‘Huge risk and I’m pretty sure it will backfire on him.’

With the game goalless at half-time and Arsenal looking pretty comfortable, Keane was already changing his tune, saying: Arsenal have done very well, the shape of the team, pressing high up the pitch, they look comfortable in possession, had a couple of shots away.

‘Considering the changes they made, I was really worried about that before the game.’
