‘He knew how to unsettle me’ – Robert Pires says Manchester United legend Gary Neville didn’t stop ‘insulting’ him during Arsenal matches

Arsenal legend Robert Pires says Manchester United hero Gary Neville was 'always on top of him'

Arsenal legend Robert Pires admits former Manchester United defender Gary Neville ‘knew how to unsettle him’ and didn’t stop dishing out ‘insults’ during Premier League matches.

While Pires enjoyed individual and collective success at Highbury, winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and receiving the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award in 2002, he struggled against United.

In the 13 games he played against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, Pires came out on top just twice, suffering seven defeats.

The French legend has described his record against Manchester United as ‘catastrophic’ and says that is largely down to Neville, who was ‘always at him’.

Reflecting on Arsenal’s intense rivalry with Manchester United in the early 2000s, Pires told The Times: ‘My record against them is catastrophic and I know it.

‘My friend Gary Neville. Psychologically, he was always on top of me. He would talk to me all the time, he’d insult me all the time.

‘It was in English, so I didn’t understand anything, but I knew they weren’t nice words. He was always talking to me, always barging me, always looking for me.

‘He knew how to unsettle me. And unfortunately, he won. I had run-ins with him, with Wayne Rooney, all the time.’

Pires signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2000 and went on to score 87 goals in 287 appearances for the Gunners, as well as winning a number of trophies.

Neville, too, enjoyed huge success during his club career, winning eight Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and three FA Cups before retiring in 2011.

Manchester United and Arsenal will renew their rivalry on Thursday when Mikel Arteta’s side visit Old Trafford just four days after Ralf Rangnick was appointed as the Red Devils interim manager until the end of the season.

‘This kid had passed me by’ – Garth Crooks admits to finally taking notice of Arsenal star Nuno Tavares

Nuno Tavares

Garth Crooks admits Nuno Tavares’ impressive display against Newcastle has ensured he now stays on his radar.

The 21-year-old was a constant threat down the wing in the 2-0 win over the Magpies and also provided the assist for Bukayo Saka’s opener.

Tavares completed a move from Benfica in the summer and has had to be patient in waiting for his chance under Mikel Arteta given Kieran Tierney’s consistently reliable performances.

The Portuguese has been quietly going about his business with a run of games since Tierney picked up an injury though and Crooks is excited about what is to come from the youngster.

‘This kid had passed me by, but he’s certainly on my radar now,’ Crook said of Tavares after naming him in his BBC team of the week.

‘I’ve always admired full-backs who are not afraid to try and have an impact on the game.

‘If Tavares wasn’t running into the opposition’s half with the ball he was trying to put one of his team-mates through on goal.

Bukayo Saka
Bukayo Saka celebrates scoring Arsenal’s opener against Newcastle (Picture: Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC via Getty Images)

‘The assist for Bukayo Saka’s goal was quite brilliant.’

Saka was the second Gunner named in Crooks’ team with the Arsenal academy graduate helping to earn the home side a vital three points and send them fifth in the Premier League table.

‘From the moment the game kicked off Saka looked like a player who meant business,’ Crooks said.

‘He gave Newcastle a bit of a fright in the game’s early exchanges, but the Geordies survived.

‘However it was only a matter of time before this brilliant young talent exposed Newcastle frailties down their right flank.

‘Saka scored a fabulous goal, matched by a super display of commitment and effort. I’m looking forward to watching this lad take his next penalty, just to see how much he’s grown since the European Championships.’

Saka and Tavares will be hoping to keep Arsenal’s decent run going when they face Manchester United on Thursday night.

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell explains why Mikel Arteta should sign former Swansea City loanee Renato Sanches

Former striker Kevin Campbell believes Arsenal should consider a shock move for Lille and Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches.

Sanches has endured a curious career, winning two Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and playing in the Champions League but also flopping on loan at former Premier League club Swansea City.

The Portuguese midfielder only made 12 league appearances for the Swans, with then-manager Carlos Carvalhal saying he had a ‘very bad season’ and had ‘much to learn’ following the loan spell.

Sanches has somewhat improved his reputation at French club Lille and insisted earlier in the month he was ‘ready’ for a move to a top European club, with L’Equipe naming Arsenal and AC Milan as potential destinations for the 24-year-old.

Former Arsenal star Campbell believes Sanches would be a ‘very good’ signing for his ex-club and can add quality and experience to Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

‘I think he would be very good if they can get him in,’ Campbell told Football Insider.

‘He’s suffered with injuries but he’s still young. He’s a powerhouse in that midfield – he can pick the ball up, run, he can shoot, he can create.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta could bolster his squad in January

‘Having that power in the midfield can make a huge difference.

‘No disrespect to him but against Liverpool, for example, Sambi Lokonga was taken off by Arteta to save him. He was getting robbed time after time in that midfield.

‘Maybe there needs to be a bit more experience in there, and Sanches would bring it.

‘There’s a big opportunity for Arsenal – they’re still fifth in the table. They will be trying to improve the top end of the pitch and pushing for those top four places.’

Arsenal spent almost £150m on a host of new signings last summer but may be open to funding more deals in January following the team’s progress under Arteta.

The Gunners lost their first three games of the season in dismal fashion but have improved since then, winning five of their last six matches to climb to fifth in the table ahead of Thursday’s trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

Man Utd set to give blessing to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tribute by fans for Arsenal clash

Solskjaer

Manchester United fans are reportedly planning a tribute to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for their upcoming clash against Arsenal.

The Red Devils will look to make it a third game unbeaten in all competitions when they face the Gunners at Old Trafford on Thursday night and there is set to be special recognition for the Norwegian boss.

Solskjaer was sacked earlier this month following a poor run of results but remains a club legend from his time as a player and retains plenty of respect for helping to bring the feel good factor back to United in his spell as manager.

According to ESPN, fans are planning to display a huge flag in the Stretford End in what will be United’s first home game since his departure.

United supporters have approached the club to discuss their plans and the tribute now looks set to go ahead with their blessing.

The visit of Arsenal will also be the first game since Ralf Rangnick’s appointment as interim manager until the end of the season.

Caretaker boss Michael Carrick will be in the dugout leading the team though with United still sorting Rangnick’s working visa which should be completed in time for the visit of Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Solskjaer will most likely be watching United’s clash with Arsenal and he has already shown his appreciation to the supporters by giving a farewell interview to the club upon his sacking.

‘I wanted us to take the next step to challenge for the league, to win trophies,’ he said. ‘I want to get it out there, I’m going to leave by the front door, because I think everyone knows I’ve given everything for this club.

‘This club means everything to me and together we’re a good match, but unfortunately I couldn’t get the results we needed and it’s time for me to step aside.

‘I’m so honoured and privileged to have been trusted to take the club forward, and I really hope that I leave it in a better state than when I came.

‘The board and the owners have backed me in [terms of] bringing good people in, good players in and I think, or I know, I leave this club with a better squad.

‘The environment is fantastic, it’s an environment I’m proud of leaving because you have to enjoy coming in here working. I think there is potential in this club. We all love the club, and we all want to see it continue.’

England Women make history with incredible 20-0 win over Latvia

England Women made history with an incredible 20-0 victory over Latvia in their World Cup qualifying clash at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Ellen White, Lauren Hemp, Beth Mead and Alessia Russo all scored hat-tricks as Sarina Wiegman’s team maintained their perfect record in Group D with a record-breaking win.

It is England’s biggest winning margin in history, beating the Lionesses’ 13-0 demolition of Hungary in 2005.

By scoring three goals, Manchester City’s White became England Women’s all-time leading goalscorer as she surpassed Kelly Smith’s previous record of 46.

There were nine other goalscorers for the hosts, with Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway, Jessica Carter, Jordan Nobbs and Jill Scott also getting on the scoresheet.

England controlled 86% of the possession against Latvia, having 63 shots at goal. Their rivals did not manage a single shot.

Record goalscorer White said: ‘I feel very emotional about [breaking the record.] It’s been spoken about for a long time.

‘I feel really proud of the girls, we’ve got some of the girls that have scored their first goal for England. I love scoring for England so seeing them score – they’re coming through now – so I feel really proud.

‘It’s incredible. I feel really lucky, I’ve had amazing support from my family, my friends, coaches, teammates and staff. But I’m not stopping here, I want to keep going – I want to score goals for England.’

White added: ‘I [look up to Kelly Smith] so much. It’s been spoken about a lot, going above Kelly Smith and breaking this record.

‘To me, she’s a legend. I have so much love and respect for her. I feel very lucky to have played alongside her, I was her team-mate. She’ll always be the best for me.

‘I just want to play well, be selected and help the team do whatever we can to make the crowd and England proud. We’ll just try and enjoy it.’

England head coach Wiegman, meanwhile said she is ‘very proud’ of White for breaking the Lionesses’ goalscoring record.

‘She has had a tremendous career, of course,’ the Dutch manager said. ‘This was a team performance, we kept on going. So many records were broken.’

Australia and New Zealand host the next Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2023.

‘A joy to behold’ – Pat Nevin singles out Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah after Man Utd draw

Chelsea hero Pat Nevin is relishing watching Trevoh Chalobah make a name for himself under Thomas Tuchel.

The talented defender has finally made his breakthrough at Chelsea this season having come up through the club’s youth system.

After three loan spells, Tuchel has given the 22-year-old a chance to impress and after scoring on his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace in the opening game he’s not looked back.

Chalobah has scored three goals in all competitions this season and played a starring role defensively in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday.

‘Watching Trevoh Chalobah suddenly ‘know’ he is as good as any top international striker he comes up against in a one-v-one is a joy to behold,’ Nevin told Chelsea’s website.

‘Yes, his goals have helped boost his confidence but surely not as much as his manager’s belief in him and his encouragement.’

Jorginho made amends for his miscontrolled effort that led to Jadon Sancho’s opener by keeping his composure to equalise from the penalty spot at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian is the club’s designated penalty taker but Nevin admits for the first time he wanted one of his team-mates to step up to the spot.

‘I will admit that for the first time ever I was hoping he might step aside and let someone like Reece James walk up and just leather the ball as hard as possible,’ he added.

‘Worst case scenario, I hoped Jorginho would hoof the thing instead of his little hop, skip and jump for a change.

‘We all know the outcome now, but that took some nerve to believe in himself enough to let the keeper move first and stroke it the other way.

‘Maybe there is a deeper story here. Thomas Tuchel has clearly told the team as a group to believe in themselves and their abilities.

‘This is not a group that plays with fear. In fact it is quite the opposite. From Toni Rudiger to Callum Hudson-Odoi, these look like players who have been told to express themselves, albeit within a structure.’

The league leaders are in action once again on Wednesday night when they travel to Watford.

Sir Alex Ferguson names his best ever Manchester United captain

Manchester United v Swansea City - Premier League
Sir Alex Ferguson worked with the very best during his time in charge (Picture: Alex Livesey/Getty Images)

Sir Alex Ferguson insists Bryan Robson was ‘easily’ the best captain he had during his Manchester United tenure.

The Scot worked with some of the very best in world football during his 26 years at the Old Trafford helm that included some memorable captains.

The likes of Steve Bruce, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Nemanja Vidic all lifted league titles wearing the captain’s armband under his leadership.

But Robson, who captained the club for a record 12 years between 1982 and 1994, was the standout leader for Ferguson.

‘Well, he was easily the best captain I had. I think over the period he was at United, he was the best player,’ Ferguson told United’s website.

‘The players loved him. ‘They responded to him and he was the longest-serving captain in my time anyway.

‘It’s difficult for a captain because sometimes he has to tell the truth to players, you know? The encouragement he’s got to give them sometimes can be quite volatile and he was like that, but the players did love him.

Bryan Robson

‘They appreciated the time he took on them and another thing, he’s the only captain I knew who could make a decision on the pitch. He didn’t need to look over to me.

‘He would do that and that’s unusual. In fact it’s very unusual because he had the balls to do that.’

Meanwhile, current Red Devils captain Harry Maguire has come in for criticism of late following a run of below par performances.

It’s led to some pundits questioning whether the England defender should keep the armband but Liverpool legend John Barnes insists he deserves to.

‘Harry Maguire is absolutely the right man to be Manchester United captain. He’s playing in a back four that aren’t being protected,’ he said.

‘If Liverpool’s front three didn’t work as hard off the ball, the back four would also struggle.

‘It’s not about any individual defender because Harry Maguire is a good defender, as are Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw. But the problem is, they’re just being left to defend when the rest of the team doesn’t apart from Fred and Scott McTominay who also need more hard done work in front of them.

‘So, I don’t criticise Maguire at all because he’s a good defender for Manchester United and England but the way the team is playing, he’s being left to defend on his own which he can’t do so I don’t blame him at all.’

Brendan Rodgers rates Manchester United’s decision to appoint Ralf Rangnick as interim manager

Brendan Rodgers believes Ralf Rangnick will offer stability and experience to Manchester United.

The 63-year-old has agreed to become United’s interim manager for the remainder of the season following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this month.

Rangnick will then move to a consultancy role at Old Trafford next summer, while United will look to appoint a new long-term manager.

Rodgers is among the names on United’s shortlist alongside Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

But the Leicester City manager believes United have made a smart move by bringing in Rangnick.

‘I think they have appointed a very experienced man in football, both in his role as a sporting director and as a coach,’ said Rodgers.

Ralf Rangnick has agreed to become Manchester United's interim manager for the rest of the season

‘I don’t know Ralf personally. I came across him when I was at Liverpool and we had a phone conversation.

‘And then at Celtic, I played against his Red Bull Leipzig team but he’s clearly a very, very experienced guy who is very well thought of in the game.

‘And he will come in and offer that experience and that stability to the club and they will assess it from there.’

Rangnick has agreed the move but the German has encountered visa issues which will prevent him from being in the dugout for United’s Premier League clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Rio Ferdinand reacts to concerns Cristiano Ronaldo won’t fit in under Ralf Rangnick

Rio Ferdinand has played down concerns that new Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick will be unable to effectively manage Cristiano Ronaldo.

The German was confirmed as United’s interim replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Monday, but he is unlikely to be in the dugout in time for Thursday’s game against Arsenal with his Visa application yet to be processed.

Michael Carrick will remain in temporary charge for now and it is almost certain that the former United midfielder will restore Ronaldo to the starting line-up after his surprise decision to drop the 36-year-old to the bench against Chelsea last weekend.

Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench against Chelsea on Sunday

Managing Ronaldo’s workload and fitting him into his high-octane pressing style will represent one of Rangnick’s toughest tasks, but Ferdinand is confident the 63-year-old is up to the task, despite never having managed a club of United’s stature in the past.

Ferdinand did, however, point to Rangnick’s work at Schalke where he helped prolong the career of former Real Madrid icon Raul, who spent two years with the Bundesliga club.

‘He only stopped coaching at Schalke for a period because he was under stress,’ Ferdinand told Vibe with Five.

Ralf Rangnick managed Raul during his time in charge of Schalke

‘All this talk that he can’t manage Cristiano Ronaldo he had a 35-year-old Raul. A genuine superstar, world class player, big personality and managed him within that team. He performed. It’s a myth.

‘It’s still an ego, it’s still a character, it’s a personality that you’ve got to manage properly so he knows how to do it, he’s done it.

‘All this ‘he’s not going to play Ronaldo’ he played a 35-year-old Raul. Ronaldo I don’t think is the issue I think he’ll find a way that Ronaldo will be able to fit in his team.’

Rangnick, meanwhile, spoke for the first time since his appointment on Monday and emphasised the need for unity if he is to get the best out of the star studded squad he has inherited from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He said: ‘I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club.

‘The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience. All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team.

‘Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.’

Arsenal hopeful on Bukayo Saka injury but he remains a doubt for Manchester United clash

Bukayo Saka
Bukayo Saka scored but went off injured against Newcastle on Saturday (Picture: Getty Images)

Bukayo Saka remains a doubt for Arsenal’s trip to Manchester United in the Premier League on Thursday night, although the Gunners are hopeful that no serious damage was done at the weekend.

The 20-year-old scored in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday but then limped out of the contest just after the hour mark.

The thigh problem is not thought to be serious and his substitution was precautionary, with Mikel Arteta saying after the win: ‘It was an action where he said he felt something muscular. He wasn’t comfortable to continue and we’ll have to assess him.’

The Gunners go to Old Trafford on Thursday night as they look to continue their good form and the Daily Mail report that they remain hopeful that Saka will be with them when they travel north, but continue to assess him ahead of that trip.

Saka has made 13 Premier League appearances so far this season, with 12 of those coming in Arteta’s starting XI and his goal against Newcastle was his second in the league this season.

The England winger has been a big part of Arsenal’s upturn in form over the last few weeks which has seen them climb to fifth in the table and only behind West Ham in fourth on goal difference.

Arteta remains without long-term injury concerns Granit Xhaka and Sead Kolasinac for the game at Old Trafford, but other than Saka, his squad is otherwise in good shape after the comfortable win against Newcastle.

Manchester United will be without Raphael Varane, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba, while they continue to assess Luke Shaw after a head injury.

Harry Maguire will return from suspension after missing the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday due to suspension.
