AC Milan target loan deal for Chelsea forward Mason Burstow

AC Milan will target Chelsea forward Mason Burstow if they fail to sign Porto striker Mehdi Taremi, according to reports in Italy.
The Serie A club have agreed a €15 million fee with Porto but the Iran international is yet to agree personal terms.
‘Porto and Milan agreed terms for Taremi, but they now need to strike a deal with the player, so negotiations continue,’ Porto director and former goalkeeper Vitor Baia told SportItalia on Thursday.
According to Sky Sport Italy, AC Milan are now considering alternatives in the event that their deal for Taremi falls through and Burstow is on their shortlist.
The report claims that the Italian club are exploring the possibility of a loan deal for the 20-year-old.

Burstow, who has also attracted interest from Blackburn Rovers in the closing stages of the summer window, joined Chelsea from Charlton Athletic in January last year.
Last season, Burstow stayed with Chelsea’s development squad and scored 10 goals in 25 league appearances but was part of the first-team’s pre-season preparations under Mauricio Pochettino this summer.
Burstow was given his senior debut for Chelsea as a substitute in the 3-0 defeat to West Ham earlier this month.
He was handed his first start in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool agree £34m deal to sign Ryan Gravenberch ahead of Manchester United

Liverpool have agreed a €40 million (£34m) deal with Bayern Munich to sign Ryan Gravenberch.
The 21-year-old is due to travel to Liverpool on Thursday evening and will undergo a medical ahead of Friday’s transfer window deadline.
Manchester United had also made an approach for Gravenberch earlier this summer but Liverpool have stepped up their efforts in the closing stages of the window and Jurgen Klopp has already held talks with the midfielder ahead of his move to Anfield.
Gravenberch joined Bayern last year in a €18.5 million (£16m) deal from Ajax but failed to secure a regular place in the team in his first season in Germany.
After starting just five games in all competitions last term, Gravenberch made it clear earlier this summer that he would push for a move if his situation stayed the same.

Bayern have played two games in the Bundesliga this season and Gravenberch has made just one late appearance as a subsitute.
‘I expected to play more minutes than I did. I thought I would get some more chances,’ Gravenberch told ESPN in June.
‘It’s about just wanting to play, that’s the most important thing at my age.
‘I hope this can happen at Bayern Munich, otherwise we’ll just have to look further.
‘I told everyone that I don’t want another year like that. Of course you can’t always be in the starting XI, but you can still play regularly, you can get a lot of minutes.’

Jose Mourinho tells Romelu Lukaku ‘we’re missing a champion’ as Chelsea striker jets in to complete Roma loan

Jose Mourinho helped convince Romelu Lukaku to join Roma as the Chelsea striker closes in on a return to Serie A.
Lukaku had been holding out for a move to Juventus this summer but the Italian club were unable to reach an agreement with Chelsea and also faced backlash from their own fans over their move for the Belgium international.
A return to Inter was also dismissed after they were angered by Lukaku’s decision to secretly negotiate with Juve.
Lukaku rejected offers from the Saudi Pro League as he is keen to continue his playing career in Europe, but with Friday’s transfer deadline quickly approaching, the striker appeared to be running out of options.
That was until Roma made an approach last week and Mourinho’s side have moved quickly to agree a season-long loan deal with Chelsea.
According to The Independent, Mourinho played a key role in persuading Lukaku to join Roma as he personally spoke to the 30-year-old on the phone last week.

The report claims that Mourinho told Lukaku: ‘We have a good team but we are missing a champion.’
Mourinho is also said to have detailed how Lukaku will fit into his attacking plans alongside Paulo Dybala, who had attracted interest from Chelsea earlier this summer.
Lukaku arrived in Italy on Tuesday in order to finalise his move to Roma.
The Serie A club will pay Chelsea a €5 million (£4.3m) loan fee.

Spanish FA urge own president Luis Rubiales to resign over Jenni Hermoso kiss scandal

The Spanish FA (RFEF) have released a statement urging their own president Luis Rubiales to resign over the Jenni Hermoso kiss scandal.
Rubiales was pictured grabbing Hermoso and kissing the player on the lips during Spain’s celebrations after beating England in the Women’s World Cup final.
Spanish prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation over Rubiales and are looking into whether the incident amounts to a crime of sexual assault.
Hermoso says that the kiss was not consensual and has confirmed that she will not play for Spain again until Rubiales has been sacked, while her international team-mates have joined her in solidarity.
RFEF chief Rubiales, 46, still remains in his post despite being provisionally suspended by FIFA.
An emergency assembly was called last Friday in which Rubiales was expected to resign, but instead he gave an astonishing speech in which he hit out at his critics and insisted he would not leave.
The RFEF later revealed they would be taking legal action against Hermoso and accused her of ‘lying’ about her version of events, even presenting images they claimed showed she had instigated the interaction and lifted the federation president off his feet.

But they appear to have made a U-turn and have now urged Rubiales to resign in statement.
The statement read: ‘Once the meeting of the Commission of Presidents of Regional and Territorial Federations of the RFEF has finished, the following agreements are unanimously made known to the world of football and society:
‘After the latest events and the unacceptable behaviours that have seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the presidents request that Mr. Luis Rubiales immediately present his resignation as president of the RFEF.

‘We warmly congratulate the women’s soccer team for their victory in the World Cup. We value the meaning and legacy of success for Spanish sport.
‘We express our admiration and gratitude to an unrepeatable group of players and we extend our congratulations to all those who have built, over the years with determination, the growth of women’s football.
‘We will urge the corresponding bodies to carry out a deep and imminent organic restructuring in strategic positions of the Federation to give way to a new stage of management in Spanish football.
‘Once FIFA has suspended Mr. Luis Rubiales, the Federation’s internal protocols have been activated as a result of the suspension.
‘In addition, we have urged President Pedro Rocha to immediately withdraw the last communication on behalf of the Federation with FIFA and UEFA that we have known today.
‘The RFEF maintains its commitment to continue implementing its investment, as well as equality policies for the development of women’s football.
‘Lastly, the Presidents’ Commission has given its unanimous support to Mr. Pedro Rocha so that he may lead a new stage where dialogue and reconciliation with all football institutions is the line to follow.
‘We make ourselves available to the CSD and all the institutions involved to continue building together the candidacy for the 2030 World Cup.’

Chelsea agree deal with Roma over Romelu Lukaku loan

Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle to send Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan to Roma.
One of the most extraordinary transfer sagas of the summer appears to be at an end after Lukaku agreed to take a significant pay cut to return to Italy.
Upon returning from last season’s loan at Inter Milan, the striker had no plans to play for Chelsea again with negotiations beginning over a permanent switch to the San Siro.
However, the Champions League runners-up failed to meet the Blues’ asking price and later pulled out of the deal upon discovering that the Belgian international was also in talks to sign for bitter rivals Juventus.
Despite agreeing personal terms with the Serie A giants, they too failed to agree a price with Chelsea and gave up on the move amid fierce backlash from supporters.
Mauricio Pochettino and co. were desperate to get a permanent fee for Lukaku and although several Saudi Pro League sides were willing to pay up, the 30-year-old had no interest whatsoever in moving to the Middle East.
But with time running out, Roma emerged as a possible option with the player keen on reuniting with his former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

And The Telegraph now reports that after four days of intense talks, terms for a ‘highly complicated’ deal have been reached with contracts set to be finalised on Monday evening.
It is said that Chelsea will receive a £5million loan fee, while Roma will pay Lukaku just over £6m in wages.
The forward has agreed to take a massive cut from his current £16.9m annual salary, so that his parent club will not pay a penny for him this season.
It has also been agreed that should he return to Stamford Bridge next summer he will have to take a further cut to his wages.
Lukaku re-joined Chelsea in 2021 from Inter for a then-club record fee of £97m, but the transfer proved a disaster as he scored only eight league goals and incensed fans by saying he wanted to move back to Italy just a few months into the move.
After a mixed loan at Inter last season, he’ll be hoping Mourinho can get him back to his best, having previously recorded 33 goals and 11 assists in 76 appearances under the Special One.

Gary Neville slams ‘rash’ Virgil van Dijk after red card against Newcastle

Manchester United legend Gary Neville tore into Virgil van Dijk for the ‘rash’ defending that saw him sent off against Newcastle United.
The Dutchman was given his marching orders after bringing down Alexander Isak just outside Liverpool’s penalty area.
The Swede let the ball roll along his body but he was fouled when Van Dijk kicked through his leg and sent the forward tumbling.
Van Dijk was in disbelief when a red card was branded but the decision was verified after a VAR review.
Jurgen Klopp was similarly furious on the sidelines but speaking over a highlight of the incident, Neville agreed with the ref’s decision and branded Van Dijk ‘rash’.

Jurgen Klopp is perplexed but I thought he [Van Dijk] just kicked through the centre forward,’ Neville said on Sky Sports.
‘Van Dijk’s questioning the decision but this is going to get very messy, very quickly for Liverpool if they go down to ten men. It wasn’t Van Dijk’s ball to win from the angle he was challenging from.
‘He had to try and follow Isak’s run but he decided to try to win it. I think he just kicks through Isak to get the ball. Oh he does. He kicks his left leg, it’s so rash from Van Dijk. He’s got the pace, he’s the right side, he doesn’t need to commit there.
‘Now he’s starting to abuse the official. He’s not going to overturn it. We’ve all been there, you’ve just got to get off the pitch and take your medicine. It’s a VVD that wouldn’t have tried to win that a few years ago. He would have allowed Van Dijk to take a touch and take it off him in the channel. It’s just rash from Van Dijk.
‘I mean look at that, he doesn’t just tap him – he wellies through him! Isak’s gone past him because Van Dijk is committing [to the tackle].’

Erik ten Hag gives Raphael Varane injury update ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Arsenal

Erik ten Hag admits he does not know the extent of Raphael Varane’s injury, with Manchester United set to take on Arsenal next Sunday.
Varane was subbed off at half-time of United’s comeback win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, and replaced by Victor Lindelof.
After poor performances in their opening games against Wolves and Tottenham,it appeared the Red Devils were still on the beach as they went 2-0 down within four minutes at Old Trafford.
They rallied after that, with Christian Eriksen pulling one back before the break, before Casemiro levelled the score in the 52nd minute and Bruno Fernandes completed the turnaround with a late penalty after Forest went down to 10 men.
Up next, United take on rivals Arsenal who remain unbeaten after three games though could only disappointingly draw 2-2 at home to 10-man Fulham on Saturday.
But they could be without key defender Varane who has been struggling with fitness issues since before the campaign began, with his early withdrawal against Forest worrying fans.
Asked about how the French centre-back was, Ten Hag said post-match: ‘He had complaints, we didn’t want to risk him.

‘We have Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, who could replace him, so we don’t take a risk.
‘He had complaints and if it’s really bad I don’t know, we have to wait.’
If Varane injury’s is bad, he’ll join a growing list of player’s in United’s treatment room, that now includes Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount.
Moreover, both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both on the sidelines meaning right-back Diogo Dalot was forced to start at left-back, with the England international expected to be out injured until November.
As a result, United are looking to sign free agent and former Chelsea, Southampton and Leicester defender Ryan Bertrand.

Jamie Carragher blasts Ben Chilwell for ‘awful’ mistake during Chelsea’s win over Luton

Jamie Carragher couldn’t believe how Ben Chilwell squandered a brilliant chance to score during Chelsea’s win over Luton Town.
Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Friday night – the first victory of the Mauricio Pochettino era.
Raheem Sterling scored either side of the break before summer signing Nicolas Jackson got his first goal for the club in the closing stages, but it could have been even more with the Blues missing several great chances.
Once such moment came shortly after half-time with the score at 1-0, as Chilwell drived into the box following a slick move and, though he had three defenders around him, all he needed to do was fire a shot past Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski.
But extraordinary, the England left-back attempted to square the ball to Sterling, who was in a much worst position, only for his pass to be cleared behind for a corner.
The 26-year-old could not believe what he had done, and neither could anyone at Stamford Bridge, including Carragher.
‘I can’t believe what I’ve just seen,’ the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sports.
“I CAN’T believe what I’ve just seen!” 😱

A huge chance for Ben Chilwell 🤯 pic.twitter.com/KcLywC2qKC
‘We had just been talking about Ben Chilwell’s role in an attacking sense and it looked like he was going to make me eat my words. But that was just bizarre!
‘He drives through the middle and he is in the centre of the goal, unmarked. Unbelievable!
‘It’s awful. It really is. Such poor decision making.
‘Maybe he was reluctant to use his right foot, or lost his bearings a little? Just trying to find excuses as to why he wouldn’t shoot there.
‘The goal was right in front of him. If Luton get back into the game, that moment will certainly be looked at.’
Thankfully for Chilwell, the Hatters offered little in the way of attacking threat, with just one shot on target all game, with Carragher later adding: ‘It will become a joke in the dressing room with the staff and the other players, but it could have been worse had Chelsea not gone on to win this game.’

Jenni Hermoso and Spain Women players say they will not play for their country until Luis Rubiales is fired

Jenni Hermoso and the Spain Women’s team will not represent their country until Luis Rubiales has been removed from his role as head of the Spanish football federation.
Rubiales has refused to resign following widespread condemnation for kissing midfielder Hermoso on the lips without consent following Spain’s World Cup victory over England.
Video footage also emerged of him grabbing his crotch in celebration while in close proximity to Queen Letizia of Spain and her 16-year-old daughter.
Rubiales was expected to step down at an extraordinary general assembly called by the RFEF on Friday but instead claimed he was the victim of ‘social murder’ and ‘false feminism’ in an astonishing rant.
The 46-year-old added it was a ‘spontaneous’ and ‘consensual’ kiss that took place during the trophy presentation last Sunday.
But in a statement released on Friday evening, Hermoso reiterated: ‘I want to clarify, that at no time did I consent to the kiss.
‘I don’t tolerate that my word is questioned, much less that words are invented that I haven’t said.’

56 players including Hermoso and her World Cup-winning teammates signed the joint statement demanding Rubiales be sacked, insisting they will not play for their country again unless he is removed from his position at the top of Spanish football.
‘After everything that happened during the delivery of medals of the Women’s World Cup, we want to state that all the players who sign this letter will not return to a call for the national team if the current leaders continue,’ the statement read, released by players’ union Futpro.
The Spanish government has started legal proceedings to suspend Rubiales while Fifa has also launched disciplinary proceedings.
Rubiales’ comments have received almost universal condemnation, perhaps the most damning from Barcelona star Alex Alexia Putellas, who posted on Twitter: ‘This is unacceptable. It’s over. With you my team-mate @Jennihermoso.’
Former Spain goalkeepers Iker Casillas and David de Gea also blasted the president of Spanish football with current Spain international Borja Iglesias insisting he will refuse to play for La Roja until the matter is resolved.

Mike Dean reveals he did not send referee Anthony Taylor to VAR monitor ‘because he is a mate’

Former Premier League official Mike Dean has admitted that he refused to intervene on one of last season’s biggest VAR controversies because the on-pitch referee ‘was a mate’.
The 55-year-old, who spent 22 years refereeing in the top flight, became a dedicated VAR official last season after hanging up his whistle but made a high-profile gaffe in just the second matchday of the season.
Dean was on VAR duty for Tottenham’s visit to Chelsea on 16 August 2022, with Anthony Taylor the on-field referee, and both managed to miss Cristian Romero’s clear hair pull on Marc Cucurella in the final moments of the game.
The Argentine centre-back should have been shown a red card but instead Dean chose not to intervene, with Spurs equalising from the subsequent corner, and he was stood down from duty for the following gameweek.
Dean, who has left his role with PGMOL and is part of Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme, has now revealed that it was a conscious decision not to send Taylor to the monitor because he did not want to create any more ‘grief’ for his friend.
Speaking on the Up Front podcast with Simon Jordan, Dean – who regrets his decision – explained: ‘I missed the stupid hair pull at Chelsea versus Tottenham which was pathetic from my point of view.
‘It’s one of them where if I had my time again, what would I do? I’d send Anthony [Taylor] to the screen. I think I knew if I did send him to the screen … he’s cautioned both managers, he’s had a hell of a game, it’s been such a tough game end to end.

‘I said to Anthony afterwards: “I just didn’t want to send you to the screen after what has gone on in the game”.
‘I didn’t want to send him up because he is a mate as well as a referee and I think I didn’t want to send him up because I didn’t want any more grief than he already had.
