Ben Chilwell allays injury fears after nasty ankle roll in Chelsea’s draw with Tottenham
Ben Chilwell insisted he was ‘fine’ after rolling his ankle during Chelsea’s goalless draw with Tottenham and hopes to fully recover in time to play a part in the side’s Champions League at Sevilla this week.
Both teams had opportunities to find the net in Sunday’s cagey London derby, with second-half substitute Olivier Giroud missing arguably the best chance of the game in the dying moments at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard looked on nervously as Chilwell went down in a heap in the 74th minute and it initially appeared the England left-back would be unable to see out the full 90 minutes.
But the defender remained on the field after being seen to by Chelsea’s medical staff and played down fears over his ankle while speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the final whistle.
‘I was desperate to carry on and thankfully I ran it off,’ the former Leicester full-back said.
‘It’s fine now so I’m just looking forward to recovering and hopefully playing again in midweek.’
Chilwell was delighted to come away from the match with a clean sheet and believes Chelsea successful nullified the threat of both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
‘I spoke to a few of the Tottenham boys and we all felt it was pretty tight,’ he added.
‘It was on a bit of a knife-edge and needed a bit of brilliance from an individual to go and win the game.
‘Mason’s strike might have done it but it was a great save.
‘Both teams were tactically pretty good and, as much as we’d have liked to have won the game, it was important not to lose either.
‘We’re happy with a clean sheet against a great strikeforce like theirs because we know how good they are.
‘Kane and Son are very clinical going forward and the link-up play between them is very good so we’re happy with nullifying them both.’
Chilwell continued: ‘When you’re battling up the top, you don’t want to give them points and they don’t want to give you points.
‘We wanted to win but we’ll take the draw – we’ve got to be happy with that.
‘I don’t know if it was entertaining to watch but I found it pretty entertaining on the pitch because it was two good teams who were tactically very good on the day.
‘I’d have loved for us to win the game at Stamford Bridge against our rivals but for myself and the rest of the defence, the clean sheet is really important for us moving forward.’

Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay takes pop at the Glazers in new rap song
Former Manchester United attacker Memphis Depay appears to have taken a pop at his old club’s owners, the Glazer family, in his latest rap song, ‘Big Fish’.
The Netherlands international moved to Old Trafford from PSV back in 2015, when Louis van Gaal was still in charge, but netted just two Premier League goals in 33 appearances and was sold to Lyon two years later at a loss.
Depay has enjoyed a return to form during his time in France and United had the foresight to include a buyback clause, though it appears unlikely the club will be triggering that anytime soon.
As well as playing football, Depay has also pursued a hip-hop career in recent years, releasing several songs, with his latest effort seemingly including a swipe at the Glazer family.
‘I’ve been planning to make some statements,’ raps Depay. ‘I need money like the Glazers.’
The Glazer family have owned United for over 15 years, with their reign coinciding with a lack of spending that has seen them fail to mount a serious title challenge over the past seven seasons.
United recently announced that the club’s debt had soared by 133% to £474.1million as the coronavirus pandemic hit TV deals, ticket sales and sponsorship, though United still paid out £20m in dividends to the Glazer family.

Depay is out of contract with Lyon next summer and has been heavily linked with a cut-price move to Barcelona.
Speaking about why his time at United went sour, Depay said: ‘Leaving Manchester United? That was not complicated. I’m young, I need to play.
‘When I think about the last time I played a whole 90 minutes before coming here [to Lyon], it was a year ago. It’s incredible.
‘I have no bitterness towards Jose Mourinho [United’s manager in Depay’s second and final season].
‘I did what I had to do in training. Of course, I didn’t understand his choices, but he was the boss. I had to accept those choices. I think I was not good enough for him. But it’s okay, I’m showing my quality here [at Lyon]. I’ll be back to the top and we’ll see what will happen.’

Ralph Hasenhuttl says Man Utd celebrated ‘like they had won the Premier League’
Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed Manchester United were ‘celebrating like they had won the Premier League’ after their 3-2 win over his Southampton.
Hasenhuttl’s side were 2-0 up at half-time after goals from Jan Bednarek and free kick specialist James Ward-Prowse but super sub Edinson Cavani flipped the game on its head.
Cavani provided an assist for Bruno Fernandes on the hour mark before scoring two goals of his own, including a headed winner in stoppage time, to secure a famous fightback for Ole Solskjaer’s team.
The result propelled United into the top half of the Premier League and leaves them just five points behind league leaders Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.
And Hasenhuttl, who was proud of his players’ efforts despite defeat, claimed they’d celebrated as if they’d actually won the title.
‘You can hear them celebrating in their dressing room,’ Hasenhuttl said after the match.
‘You know what you have done today and how tough an opponent you have been because they were celebrating like they had won the Premier League.
‘That was the thing for me because it is definitely a statement when they are celebrating like they were because it was tough.
‘They had to play the best they can to win against us and we can be proud of how we played.
‘We had some fantastic moments – the best I think we can against such sides. I am very happy about what we can play today.
‘For 2-2, that is okay for us, but then we conceded a third goal. We played as good as we can today.’

‘He should do better’ – Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink urges Tammy Abraham to ‘step up’ after Chelsea’s draw with Tottenham
Chelsea hero Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has criticised Tammy Abraham’s movement and finishing following the side’s goalless draw with Tottenham and questioned whether the striker watches back clips of himself to improve his game.
Abraham has started the season promisingly with five goals in 14 games for the Blues but squandered three chances to find the net at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Second-half substitute Olivier Giroud – who has been vocal with his demands for more first-team minutes – almost scored a winning goal for Chelsea at the death and the Frenchman will be looking to put pressure on Abraham earn back a place in Frank Lampard’s starting XI.
According to Hasselbaink, Abraham was a ‘breath of fresh air’ at the start of last season but must improve in the key moments of matches and score more ‘important goals’ to reach that next level.
‘It’s a 1-0, it’s always going to be a 1-0 game,’ Hasselbaink told Sky Sports shortly after the final whistle.
‘He has had three chances, three opportunities, where he has to make that a little bit his own.
‘He has to improve in those moments.
‘He did every so well last year when he came in. Half of the season he was a breath of fresh air, scored lots of goals.
‘Second half, he had it difficult but that’s normal because he’s a young boy.
‘This season he needs to step up because I think, at times, he can do better.
‘With his stature, with his ability, he should do better and score more goals. And score more important goals.’
The former Netherlands attacker added: ‘Sometimes I wonder whether he watches clips of himself after the game because certain times his movement can be a little bit better, his holding up can be a little bit better.
‘He needs to keep on improving.’
The draw meant Chelsea remained third in the Premier League table, two points adrift of joint-leaders Tottenham and Liverpool.
Lampard’s men travel to Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday evening before returning to west London to entertain Leeds United next weekend.

Raul Jimenez ‘comfortable’ after fracturing skull against Arsenal
Raul Jimenez suffered a fractured skull against Arsenal on Sunday night but is ‘comfortable’ in hospital after undergoing an operation, Wolves have confirmed.
The Mexican striker was rushed to hospital after a sickening collision with Gunners centre-back David Luiz in the opening minutes of Wolves’ 2-1 win at the Emirates.
He required more than 10 minutes of treatment on the pitch after colliding with the Brazilian defender at the front post from an Arsenal corner.
Both sets of medical staff rushed to attend to the forward, who required oxygen and a neck brace as he was taken off the pitch.
Wolves thanks Arsenal’s medical staff for their additional support as well as NHS staff as Jimenez continues to recover in hospital.
A statement read: ‘Raul is comfortable following an operation last night, which he underwent in a London hospital.
‘He has since seen his partner Daniela and is now resting. He will remain under observation for a few days while he begins his recovery.
‘The club would like to thank the medical staff at Arsenal, the NHS paramedics, hospital staff and surgeons who, through their skill and early response, were of such help.
‘The club ask that Raul and his family are now afforded a period of space and privacy, before any further updates are provided in due course.’
In Jimenez’s absence, goals from Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto secured a 2-1 win for the away side.

Manchester United contact Edinson Cavani over ‘racist’ Instagram post as investigation looms
Manchester United quickly contacted Edinson Cavani to explain the issue with a post he made on social media after the side’s win over Southampton, with the Football Association expected to investigate it.
After coming off the bench to net a brace at St Mary’s in United’s come-from-behind 3-2 victory, Cavani responded to a post from a friend on Instagram saying, ‘Gracias negrito’, which translates as, ‘Thanks, little black’.
The post was deleted around three hours after first being uploaded, with The Times reporting that United were made aware of the controversy and contacted their summer signing over the issue.
Cavani and United are now braced for an FA inquiry, though similarly to what Luis Suarez argued nine years ago, there is a distinction in Spanish between ‘negro’ and ‘negrito’, with the latter used regularly in Uruguay.
The FA’s report into Suarez’s row did not take issue with the latter and Cavani reportedly told United that it is used as a term of endearment in his home country, having used it in a friendly exchange with a pal.
If the FA do investigate the post, Cavani is more likely to receive a similar punishment to Bernardo Silva over his ill-judged social media post a year ago, with the Manchester City man banned for one match, fined £50,000 and ordered to complete face-to-face education.
However, Cavani has only been in England for around two months and will likely have been unaware of the different connotations of the term in Europe compared to South America, with former Spurs and Chelsea player Gus Poyet explaining the term during the Suarez saga.
‘In Uruguay it is a nickname for someone whose skin is darker than the rest,’ he explained at the time.
‘It is not offensive. Such people are part of our society. We will defend them, go to war with them, share everything with them, and at the same time use that word.
‘But I do understand that in England the word is used differently, so we have to pay attention how we use it. We need to adapt.
‘Do we as foreigners need to adapt more to England than England to us? Yes, of course. That’s common sense. I know things Luis Suarez does not know because I have been here 14 years. So let’s use common sense and give the kid a chance.’
Suarez of course used the term while in a heated on-pitch row with Evra and was handed an eight-game ban, whereas Cavani’s use of the term was not meant to insult and could save him from a suspension.

Paul Ince tips Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave Arsenal despite signing new contract
Former Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will look to leave Arsenal at the end of the season.
The Gabon forward finally ended speculation over his future in September by penning a new three-year deal at the Emirates, worth a reported £300,000-a-week.
Aubameyang was instrumental in the Gunners’ FA Cup run last term and the early form under Mikel Arteta convinced the 31-year-old to stay, despite interest from Barcelona.
However, Arsenal’s form has collapsed since Aubameyang’s penned his new deal and the Gunners’ lacklustre start to the season was summed up with their 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Sunday.
The striker wasted one good opportunity to score but otherwise it was another out-of-sorts display from Aubameyang and Ince believes the signs are there that the striker is already thinking about leaving.
‘Aubameyang for me is a worry,’ Ince told DAZN.
‘He looks frustrated. He looks like he’s not getting enough service. If he doesn’t get service – even though he signed a three-year contract- I can’t see him being there next year. I really, really can’t.
‘I don’t care [if he’s signed a new deal]. It looks like he’s got that sort of body language that he’s just not happy. It doesn’t look right.’
Ince was providing punditry on the game alongside Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who pleaded with Aubameyang for months to sign a new deal.
Wright believes Aubameyang’s problem could be that the club haven’t yet made good on their promise to invest in the side around him.
‘We’ve got a striker that is you have to say in the latter stages of his career, he’s in his best years and he’s signed them to Arsenal,’ said Wright.
‘Probably on the proviso that there will be players that come in to help him to take Arsenal to where they need to be to but that’s not happening at the moment.
‘I’m sure that’s what Mikel wants to do but at the moment he can’t do it. He hasn’t got that money to spend to bring that player in to help as well and he’s trying to coach a team to help them play in a certain way to get results. Patience is needed for me.’

Thomas Partey to miss ‘next few Arsenal games’ as injury is worse than first feared
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed midfielder Thomas Parety will miss the side’s ‘next few games’ as the thigh injury he sustained is worse than first feared.
The Ghanaian, a £45m arrival from Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, was subbed at half-time in a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa in early November.
The midfielder had been hopeful that he’d recover from his thigh injury in order to return after the international break but the problem is worse than the club first feared.
Partey missed Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves and Arteta confirmed afterwards that the midfielder will miss the next few games at a minimum.
‘He had an injury very early in the game, he wanted to continue the second half,’ Arteta told reporters.
‘We knew it was a significant injury. He’s done very well and he’s working very hard, he wants to be available.
‘Hopefully we can get him back soon but it’s an area we need to be careful and we need to be protective with the player.
‘I don’t think he will be with us in the next few games.’
Partey is therefore certain to miss next Sunday’s game against arch rivals Tottenham.
Jose Mourinho’s side went top of the league table with a 0-0 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before Arsenal’s defeat later in the day.
The Gunners’ loss means the club have made their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign.

‘I’m really happy’ – Donny van de Beek delighted to be making full Premier League debut for Manchester United against Southampton
Donny van de Beek says he’s ‘really happy’ to be making his full Premier League debut against Southampton and admits he has had to be patient for chances since joining Manchester United.
The 23-year-old completed a high-profile £35million move from Ajax to Old Trafford in the summer but has struggled to nail down a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield.
Solskjaer has previously only started Van de Beek in the Carabao Cup and Champions League and fans and pundits have been calling for the Dutchman to get the nod after an impressive performance against Istanbul Basaksehir in the week.
A delighted Van de Beek finally starts at St Mary’s and will play alongside Nemanja Matic and Fred in the middle of the park, with Paul Pogba out injured.
‘Yes, I feel good!’ Van de Beek told Sky Sports when asked for his reaction to being named in Solskjaer’s starting XI.
‘If we get the three points today I will feel much better but we prepare good so let’s see.’
Asked how patient he’s had to be, Van de Beek replied: ‘Yes, a lot. You always want to start and that’s what I can do today so I’m really happy.’
‘They have shown that they are a really strong team.
‘They play good so we need to be really sharp and play as a team.’

Former United captain Roy Keane believes Van de Beek ‘deserves’ his chance and says Southampton will be a ‘nice test’ for the Netherlands international.
‘He’s only been at the club two minutes but I think when you lot at the other midfield performances from the other players in some of the games where United have been really poor, he deserves his chance,’ Keane said.
‘He’s got qualities and they’ll need it today because I think Southampton are excellent, full of energy.
‘It’s a nice test for him but he’s a good player and deserves his chance to start this game.’
Keane added: ‘I think Ole’s fond it hard to get that balance right.
‘Who’s to say he won’t go with a diamond today.
‘He’s been mixing and matching, trying to get that consistency into the tean with a consistent starting XI.
‘It’s been difficult with one or two injuries but I’m intrigued today. United beat Everton and West Brom – no big deal.
‘If they can go and win here today you’re thinking maybe United are getting back on track properly.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Anthony Martial absence for Man Utd’s clash with Southampton
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Anthony Martial became ill overnight, ruling him out of Sunday’s clash with Southampton despite travelling with the squad.
The Frenchman – who is yet to net in the Premier League this season – was a surprise omission from United’s team, with Mason Greenwood brought into the starting XI to replace him.
But Solskjaer has allayed fears that Martial has picked up an injury and says he has stayed at the team hotel after catching an illness, which is not believed to be coronavirus.
‘Anthony fell ill overnight,’ the United boss told MUTV. ‘So he’s in the hotel by himself, poor lad.’
Solskjaer had several attacking options at his disposal to replace Martial, opting for teenager Greenwood over veteran summer signing Edinson Cavani.
Explaining his thinking, Solskjaer added: ‘Edinson played well midweek, but we felt Mason needed a game to start.’
The only other change from United’s last Premier League outing sees Donny van de Beek handed his first start in the league after impressing in midweek in the Champions League.
Solskjaer insists he has just been giving the former Ajax midfielder time to settle and is confident he can make an impression against Southampton.
Asked if Van de Beek is ready, Solskjaer replied instantly: ‘Yeah, definitely [Van de Beek is ready].
‘He’s been good in the games he’s played so it’s never been, “Is it the Premier League or Champions League?”, it’s giving him time to settle into the group.’
Van de Beek will play in a more advanced role with Nemanja Matic and Fred behind him, with Greenwood partnering Marcus Rashford up top with Bruno Fernandes in support.
