Man Utd star Marcus Rashford names sinister reason for criticism aimed at him this season

Manchester United v Fulham FC - Premier League

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford feels there is a sinister reason for the criticism he has faced this season from various pundits and journalists.

Rashford has produced just five goals across 32 appearances in all competitions this season under Erik ten Hag in what has been a poor campaign thus far.

The forward was fined two weeks’ wages worth £650,000 last month after he was caught partying in Northern Ireland, which saw him miss an FA Cup match.

Former United star Andy Cole told Rashford to ‘have a look at himself’ after the incident while Alan Shearer called out the England international for his body language during the 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Wayne Rooney encouraged Rashford to work harder for the club this week following reports that he is barely on speaking terms with his boss Ten Hag.

But Rashford has passionately defended himself in a blog post for The Players’ Tribune and has argued that the criticism aimed at him is due to his desire to feed hungry children during the coronavirus pandemic.

Rashford successfully waged a high-profile campaign in 2020 to persuade the government to provide free meals to vulnerable youngsters and eventually forced former Prime Minister Boris Johnson into a U-turn.

Rashford also says there is a ‘tone’ to the criticism he has faced which ‘you don’t get with all footballers’.

‘I’m not trying to have a go at the media,’ Rashford wrote. ‘I understand the game, you know what I mean? They’re not really writing about me.

‘It’s like they’re writing about this character, ‘Marcus Rashford’ – it can’t just be about me as a 26-year-old lad on a night out, or a lad getting a parking ticket.

‘It’s got to be about how much my car costs, guessing my weekly salary, my jewellery or even my tattoos.

‘It’s got to be about my body language, and questioning my morals, and speculating about my family, and my football future.

‘There’s a tone to it that you don’t get with all footballers. Let’s just leave it at that.

Manchester United v West Ham United - Premier League

‘I think some of it goes back to the pandemic. I was just trying to use my voice to make sure that kids weren’t going hungry, because I know exactly how it feels.

‘For some reason, that seemed to rub certain people the wrong way. It seems like they’ve been waiting for me to have a human moment so they can point the finger and say, ‘See? See who he really is?’ – listen, I’m not a perfect person.

‘When I make a mistake, I’ll be the first one to put my hand up and say that I need to do better.

‘But if you ever question my commitment to Man United, that’s when I have to speak up.

‘It’s like somebody questioning my entire identity, and everything I stand for as a man. I grew up here. I have played for this club since I was a boy.

‘My family turned down life-changing money when I was a kid so I could wear this badge.’

Jude Bellingham remains an injury doubt for Real Madrid’s La Liga clash with Valencia

Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham
Bellingham’s wait to return to action looks set to be extended (Picture: Getty)

Jude Bellingham is reportedly a doubt for Real Madrid’s La Liga game against Valencia on Saturday.

The England international has not played since being withdrawn with an ankle injury during Madrid’s 4-0 win over title rivals Girona on February 10.

According to The Athletic, Bellingham has not yet returned to training alongside the rest of his teammates and has instead been completing physio, gym and swimming pool work as part of his recovery.

As such, the 20 year-old looks unlikely to be included for the tricky-looking trip to the Mestalla, which will see Los Blancos extend their gap at the top of the league summit to nine points with a win.

Madrid are said to have targeted their Champions League Round of 16 second leg tie against Leipzig on March 6 as a possible return for their star midfielder.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men have been without Bellingham for their past three games, with that run of fixtures starting with a narrow 1-0 win over Leipzig in the first leg of their European counter.

The Spanish giants were then held to a 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano, before returning to the Bernabeu to grind out a 1-0 win over Sevilla.

Before rolling his ankle against Girona, Bellingham had netted his 19th and 20th goals of the season in what is turning out to be a dream debut season in Madrid.

A whole host of records have tumbled Bellingham’s way this term, with that brace against the Catalan club seeing him become the highest scoring Real Madrid midfielder in a single La Liga season in the 21st century.

This is not the first time that the former Birmingham City academy graduate has been in the treatment room this season.

Bellingham was forced to sit out the reverse game against Valencia with a shoulder injury, with his teammates coping well in his absence by putting five goals past their opponents.

Rio Ferdinand sends INEOS warning to Erik ten Hag and makes Manchester derby prediction

Rio Ferdinand has warned Erik ten Hag ‘it wouldn’t be a big thing’ for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS to pull the trigger on his tenure at Manchester United should the club fail to secure a top-four finish this term.

In Ten Hag’s second campaign as head coach at Old Trafford, United find themselves languishing down in sixth place in the English top flight, 16 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool following a painful defeat at home to Fulham last weekend.

In the Champions League, United endured their worst ever campaign after finishing rock-bottom of their group, leaving the FA Cup as their only realistic shot at silverware before the end of the season.

After Ratcliffe’s £1.3billion partial takeover of United was officially completed last week, the 71-year-old businessman, the CEO of INEOS chemicals group, immediately outlined his ambitions to return the club to their former glory.

Ten Had revealed he had a ‘fantastic feeling’ after talking privately with Ratcliffe, though the British billionaire has underlined that ‘sometimes you do have to make decisions that may not be popular’, casting some doubt over the manager’s future.

Ratcliffe has also been keen to stress that INEOS are ‘not a brutal organisation’, but Ferdinand believes he would have no problem removing Ten Hag if he felt it was the best thing for the club.

Asked whether Ten Hag will keep his job if United fail to finish in the top four, Ferdinand told Vibe with FIVE: ‘It depends how [he finishes the season]. If he runs it close and they see an upturn in form and an upturn in the environment at the training ground.

Rio Ferdinand and Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag
Ferdinand believes Ten Hag’s job could be under threat (Picture: Getty)

‘And if they can see something where it’s like, “Okay we can see what it looks like going into next season maybe, if we add the right pieces to it as well”.

‘Given the structure behind him now it could be [a different story]. A lot of moving parts have to fall into place for him to stay.

‘But if they don’t finish the season well and they’re losing games and it looks like the dressing room ain’t a harmonious place… and one thing I would say is, I don’t think Jim Ratcliffe and his team are shy of making big decisions.’

Manchester United star Casemiro

The legendary ex-United and England defender added: ‘It wouldn’t be a big thing for them if they had to intervene.

‘They wouldn’t be thinking, “Oh I’ve got to work out the media and the PR”.

‘No, no. What’s right for Man United now, they’ll do.’

Ferdinand is far from confident about United’s chances away to noisy neighbours Manchester City on March 3, with Pep Guardiola’s champions currently riding a 17-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

‘It’s going to be a long day, man. It’s hard enough to go to the Etihad anyway, but we’re going there with no confidence,’ he said when asked for a prediction ahead of the Etihad clash.

‘I think we get beat by two goals. Convincingly.’

Virgil van Dijk scores in extra-time as Liverpool beat Chelsea to win thrilling Carabao Cup final

Virgil van Dijk scoring for Liverpool against Chelsea
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk struck in extra-time at Wembley (Picture: Getty)

Virgil van Dijk struck with a dramatic extra-time header as Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 to win the Carabao Cup and keep their hopes of a historic quadruple alive.

The Dutch defender rose the highest to meet Konstantinos Tsimikas’ 118th-minute corner in the 64th League Cup final at Wembley, sealing Liverpool the trophy for a record tenth time at Wembley.

In his farewell season, Jurgen Klopp – who also steered the club to glory over Chelsea two years ago – has now won seven pieces of silverware in charge of the Merseyside giants.

Raheem Sterling and Van Dijk both had goals disallowed by VAR in normal time, while Cody Gakpo and Conor Gallagher struck the woodwork in an action-packed game that appeared destined for penalties.

As extra-time beckoned, Gallagher had a huge chance to secure Chelsea their sixth League Cup, but Caoimhin Kelleher came to the rescue for Liverpool with an excellent save to deny the England midfielder.

In a breathless first seven minutes, Chelsea held off two Liverpool free-kicks from dangerous positions before Andrew Robertson found Luis Diaz with an inviting cross which the forward tamely headed into the gloves of Petrovic.

Chelsea registered their first shot on target five minutes later, but Malo Gusto’s driven strike lacked both power and precision and was easily collected by Kelleher.

Klopp’s men – far and away the more threatening side in the opening exchanges – responded with vigour, with the impressive Petrovic denying Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz in quick succession.

Cole Palmer is denied by Caoimhin Kelleher

Chelsea had a glorious opportunity to take the lead against the run of play as the ball deflected to Cole Palmer on the edge of the six-yard box with the goal gaping.

But Kelleher, starting in place of Liverpool’s injured number one Alisson, made himself big to keep the England international out, with every fan inside Wembley expecting the net to bulge.

The Blues grew in stature as the first half wore on and Raheem Sterling appeared to nudge his team in front from close-range strike in the 32nd minute. However, VAR confirmed Nicolas Jackson was offside by a whisker in the build-up and the goal was disallowed.

Cody Gakpo heads against the post

After Ryan Gravenberch was stretchered off, Cody Gakpo rose brilliantly to meet an enticing cross from Robertson and headed against the post, much to the relief of a rooted Petrovic, who could only watch on in hope.

The Reds started the second half much the stronger of the two sides and the first real opportunity fell to Wataru Endo, but the Japan midfielder fired wide with a wild attempt from outside the box.

Petrovic once again found himself at the heart of the action in the 58th minute as he parried away a volleyed effort from Harvey Elliott to keep the scoreline goalless.

Liverpool skipper Van Dijk had a goal ruled out on the hour-mark (Picture: Getty)

The game’s most controversial moment arrived on the hour-mark as Virgil van outjumped Ben Chilwell to meet Robertson’s free-kick before beating the Chelsea goalkeeper with an unstoppable header.

But Van Dijk’s header was subsequently chalked off by Chris Kavanagh and the video assistant referee after Endo was adjudged to have been offside while preventing Colwill from marking the Liverpool captain.

The woodwork again came into play in the 76th minute after Conor Gallagher flicked Palmer’s pass against the far post with Liverpool’s energy levels appearing to wane.

Conor Gallagher denied by Kelleher

With five minutes remaining of normal time, Palmer again found Gallagher in acres of space, but the onrushing midfielder was denied by Kelleher before firing over the bar just moments later.

As extra-time approached, Ibrahima Konate and Kelleher combined in a frenzied passage of pinball to somehow keep out the opposition, with Pochettino going through all the emotions in the Chelsea dugout.

Liverpool had the first big chance of extra-time as Petrovic denied 18-year-old Jayden Danns with an acrobatic stop before Elliott scuffed a strike into the side netting.

After replacing Gallagher in the 97th minute, a lively Noni Madueke tested Kelleher with a curled effort from range which the Republic of Ireland international pounced on with ease.

Petrovic made a superb save to keep Elliott’s header out from a tight angle with five minutes remaining of extra-time before Van Dijk sent Liverpool fans into raptures, nodding home Konstantinos Tsimikas’ inswinging corner.

The Reds held on to seal their 10th League Cup title and an emotional Pochettino appeared close to tears at the full-time whistle as he was denied his first trophy in English football.

Curtis Jones key to Liverpool vs Chelsea Carabao Cup final, reckons Paul Merson

Liverpool v Norwich City - Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round
Curtis Jones is dealing with an ankle problem (Picture: Getty Images)

Curtis Jones is struggling with injury and if he misses this Sunday’s Carabao Cup final it will be a big disadvantage to Liverpool as they take on Chelsea, reckons Paul Merson.

Jurgen Klopp is dealing with a string of injuries to first team players, with Jones one of the long list of Reds stars who missed the 4-1 win over Luton on Wednesday night.

Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are all definitiely out of the Wembley contest on Sunday, while Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez are hoping to be fit.

How long Jones is out for has not been confirmed, with Klopp saying ‘a bone ligament issue’ kept him out of the Luton win.

Merson believes which Liverpool players return to fitness in time will make a huge impact on the game, with Jones a big part of that argument.

The former Arsenal and England star reckons it is advantage Chelsea in the midfield if Jones is not there.

‘I’m more confident for Chelsea’s chances than I was after the Liverpool game when they lost 4-1 at Anfield in January,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

Liverpool FC v Chelsea FC - Premier League
Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino will meet at Wembley this weekend (Picture: Getty Images)

‘It all depends on who is fit for Liverpool – if Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones are fit, it is a different story. If they aren’t fit, I think it is a heads-or-tails football match.

‘If they are fit, especially Salah, and Curtis Jones – he is playing well and brings out the best in Alexis Mac Allister because he has the legs in the team – that would just swing it Liverpool’s way.

‘But if they don’t play, it is a funny old game, football. Three or four weeks ago, you are thinking Chelsea don’t have much chance after being blown away at Anfield.

‘Now all of a sudden, Chelsea are playing half-decent at the right time. Second half at Palace, they did well and at Man City the other day. For me, they are just playing well at the right time and I think they have a good balance.

‘If Curtis Jones isn’t fit, then I think Chelsea win that midfield battle.’

Arsenal and Liverpool target Pedro Neto will cost around £80m

Arsenal and Liverpool will have to pay around £80m to sign Pedro Neto from Wolves this summer, according to reports.

Both sides are interested in a deal for the 23-year-old Portugal international who is also attracting interest from Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Neto has been in fine form for Gary O’Neil’s side this season, producing nine assists and two goals across 16 Premier League games.

It was thought that a figure in excess of £53m would be enough to land the winger but Wolves are now reportedly hoping to secure around £80m for him.

Neto, who has been on Arsenal’s radar for several years, is under contract at Molineux until 2027 but Wolves may be forced into a sale due to financial rules.

O’Neil is keen to keep his player for as long as possible and lauded Neto after Wolves’ 2-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday.

‘I think his strengths are incredibly strong,’ O’Neil said. ‘Obviously his athleticism and his pace are excellent, his quality on the ball – when he’s dribbling or when he’s trying to find a pass at the end of it – is excellent.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United - Premier League
Pedro Neto is wanted by four Premier League clubs (Picture: Getty)

‘I’ve been asked a few times this week about the summer already and I’m not interested in discussing Pedro Neto leaving the football club.

‘He’s a fantastic player that we spent a lot of money on, that we work very hard on, and as far as I’m concerned we don’t want to lose our best players.

‘So we have a long way to go yet this season and then hopefully he stays with us and we can keep pushing towards the top half of the table.’

Bukayo Saka helps Arsenal break several club records during 5-0 win at Burnley

Burnley FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League
Bukayo Saka bagged a brace against Burnley (Photo: Getty)

A Bukayo Saka penalty helped Arsenal smash their own Premier League record during the 5-0 win at Burnley on Saturday.

Arsenal were simply too good for the Clarets at Turf Moor as they moved to within just two points of league leaders Liverpool.

Goals from Martin Odegaard, Saka (two), Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz saw the Gunners record yet another statement win.

But it was Arsenal’s second goal, and Saka’s first, that was perhaps the most significant, as it meant that Arteta’s side broke a near two decade old club record.

The England star’s spot-kick in the 41st minute was Arsenal’s 24th set-piece goal of the season, surpassing their record of 23 that was set in 2004/05.

Most impressively, there are still 13 games of the 2023/24 campaign to go, which just goes to show the importance of set-pieces to Arteta and co.

Furthermore, this is also the first time ever that the North Londoners have won their first five league games of a calendar year, and the first time they’ve scored five or more goals in back-to-back Premier League away games.

Burnley FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League
Arsenal’s goal different of +36 is now the best in the Premier League (Photo: Getty)

So far in 2024, the Gunners have beaten Crystal Palace 5-0, Nottingham Forest 2-1, Liverpool 3-1, West Ham 6-0 and now Burnley 5-0.

‘We are really pleased because it is a difficult place to come and Burnley have been very competitive in the big games they have played so far this season,’ Arteta told Match of the Day.

‘Individually and collectively, the purpose they are playing with, the form the players are in, even at 3-0 4-0 they want more. The way they track back at 96 minutes tells you how they are feeling.’

The result moves them back to within two points of Liverpool and at the time of writing ahead of Manchester City, but significantly the recent scorelines mean that Arsenal now have a superior goal difference compared to their title rivals.

‘At the moment all we can do is win our games and after our big two wins away from home we have a tough one in the Champions League at Porto,’ Arteta added.

‘I hope we can do it [win the title] because we are there but it is about consistency and you see the standards of the other teams. We want it, that’s for sure.’

Mauricio Pochettino explains why Robert Sanchez missed Manchester City vs Chelsea despite injury return

Manchester United v Chelsea FC - Premier League
Robert Sanchez has missed the last two months with a knee injury (Photo: Getty)

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed why Robert Sanchez was not in Chelsea’s squad for Saturday’s clash at Manchester City.

The goalkeeper had been passed fit for the trip to the Etihad having been sidelined with a knee injury for the last two months.

He hobbled off during the closing stages of Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Everton in December, with Dorde Petrovic taking his place in between the sticks since then.

In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Pochettino confirmed that Sanchez had recovered from the injury and would be in contention to play against City.

Though it was not expected that he would start what is a huge Premier League clash, it was a shock not to see the Spaniard’s name on the team sheet at all.

Pochettino has now confirmed that the 26-year-old has missed this game due to personal reasons and is looking to welcome him back for their next fixture.

‘We had hoped to include Robert in the squad today but after the press conference on Friday, it emerged that he had a personal problem which meant he could not be here with us,’ the manager said ahead of kick-off.

Former Arsenal star Willian reveals friends called him ‘crazy’ for leaving the club

Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal - Premier League
Willian scored just one goal for Arsenal (Photo: Visionhaus)

Willian has revealed that friends told him he was ‘crazy’ for leaving Arsenal despite enduring an awful season with the Gunners.

The Fulham winger made a surprise switch from Chelsea to Arsenal on a free in 2020, signing a three-year contract with Mikel Arteta’s side.

The transfer seemed to be something of a coup for the North Londoners, given the Brazilian’s ability, experience and impressive trophy haul that included two Premier League titles.

But he would end up spending just one season at the Emirates, describing the experience as ‘the worst time that he had lived as a professional’, agreeing to rip up his contract and leave for boyhood club Corinthians, before joining Fulham in 2022.

Arsenal were paying Willian £240,000-a-week, and the player has now opened up a little more on his decision to leave, and revealed how everyone thought he was mad for giving up the astronomical wages.

‘When I left Arsenal everyone knows it was not good. It was a difficult year for me,’ the 35-year-old told The Telegraph.

‘I decided to leave and, at that time, I still had two more years contract and I just said to them: “Listen, let’s break the contract. It has not worked the way we wanted. I will go somewhere else and I will continue to play football”.

Chelsea FC v Fulham FC - Premier League

‘People were saying to me: “You are crazy. You cannot give up this kind of money.

‘”Any other player in your position would never do that. They would sit on the contract and collect the money”. Stuff like that.

‘But I don’t think about money. I know money is important, for sure. But it’s not the first thing in my life.

‘For me, God first. Then my family, then football. Then the other things. But I wasn’t happy so that’s why I decided to leave.

‘I turned the situation around and, now, three years later I am at this club, enjoying myself. It’s an amazing club, to be honest.’

So far, Willian has scored a very credible 10 goals and made eight assists in 56 appearances for the Cottagers, and with his help they look to have established themselves as a Premier League side once again.
