Liverpool leave door open to Manchester United as Thiago Alcantara deal hinges on Gini Wijnaldum departure

Gini WIjnaldum holds the key to Liverpool’s move for Thiago Alcantara (Picture: Getty)

Liverpool will only push ahead with a move for Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara when and if Gini Wijnaldum leaves Anfield this summer.

The Spaniard is keen on a move to the Reds and has held talks with Jurgen Klopp over a move to the Premier League champions.

However, Liverpool’s board are reluctant to sanction a £27m move for the injury-prone midfielder, particularly in an area of the pitch where Liverpool have an abundance of options.

The board will only give the green light over a move for Thiago if a senior player is sold this summer and they will then reallocate the funds to Klopp to sign Thiago.

However, the problem is that the German coach is delighted with his squad and the only member that is not fully committed to the cause is midfielder Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman is a popular member of the Liverpool dressing room and he’s been an influential figure in the last two seasons, which have produced a title and a Champions League trophy.

However, the former PSV man has just a year left on his current deal and negotiations over a stalemate have been deadlocked for months.

Klopp remains desperate to keep the Dutchman and would rather he sees out his deal and leaves on a free than allowing him to leave for a cut-price this summer.

However, that option would likely mean missing out on Thiago as ESPN report that Liverpool’s board will not sign off a deal for the midfielder without a significant departure first.

That could play into the hands of rivals Manchester United, who are interested in signing the former Barcelona ace.

While Anfield would be Thiago’s preferred destination, the midfielder came close to moving to Old Trafford in 2013 and he will no doubt have close friend David De Gea in his ear over a move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kicked off the club’s spending by completing a £40m deal for Donny van de Beek but Thiago could be the deep-lying playmaker that the Norwegian has craved since he was appointed.

Thiago has just a year left on his deal at the Allianz and Bayern will simply sell to the highest bidder, with their asking price at £27m.

Should Liverpool’s reluctance to meet that fee continue, United could hijack the deal and pressure would then be applied to Klopp’s board.

Manchester United board divided over Dayot Upamecano transfer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign Dayot Upamecano (Picture: Getty)

Manchester United could postpone a bid for Red Bull Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano after members of the club’s board raised concerns over a move for the Frenchman this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign a fast centre-back partner for Harry Maguire, which would afford United to play a higher line next season and therefore put more pressure on opponents through a high press.

Upamecano, 21, is considered one of the finest prospects in world football and his eye-catching display in the Germans’ Champions League quarter-final win against Atletico Madrid in August caught the attention of clubs across Europe.

In truth though, Upamecano has been on the radar of Europe’s elite for far longer than that and Solskjaer has suggested the Frenchman as the club’s next signing following the £40m acquisition of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

Upamecano is valued at £50m (Picture: Getty)

However, according to the Telegraph, there is debate within Old Trafford whether the club should press ahead in a move for the Frenchman.

Leipzig value the defender at around £60m but a clause in Upamecano’s contract means he can leave the club for around £40m next summer, meaning a significant reduction in these financially-challenging times.

But some members of the board have also raised doubts over Upamecano’s readiness for a move to the club.

Manchester United Training Session - UEFA Europa League
Solskjaer is keen on signing a centre-back partner for Harry Maguire (Picture: Getty)

Though his ability is not in question, Upamecano is just 21 and some feel the Frenchman would benefit from at least another year in the Bundesliga before making a move.

Solskjaer must therefore convince his board not to postpone a move for another 12 months, when the race for the Frenchman’s signature will surely be hotter than it is now.

United spent £30m on both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly and, while neither have been disasters, neither are considered top level centre-backs.

The board are therefore reluctant to shell out even more in a challenging climate for a centre-back that may take another three to four years until he’s the real deal.

Solskjaer is having similar problems with his board over a move for Jadon Sancho.

The club are as one in their determination to sign the 20-year-old but not for Dortmund’s £108m asking price.

Instead, United are prepared to bide their time over the transfer window and test Dortmund’s resolve late on with a lower bid.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer requests three further signings after Manchester United complete Donny van de Beek deal

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is targeting three more additions this summer after the Red Devils sealed a £40.3million deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The 23-year-old underwent his medical in Amsterdam today after being given permission to leave the Netherlands’ training camp ahead of his nation’s upcoming international games.

United have long tracked the Dutchman but they pounced on the opportunity to sign him at the end of last week after Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman vowed to prioritise other midfield targets.

Jadon Sancho has been United’s priority for months but a quick-fire deal for Van de Beek will settle the nerves of many supporters, who were beginning to worry about the lack of signings.

Salzburg v Ajax - Club Friendly

While Sancho still very much remains the target, the Times claim the winger is just one of three further signings that Solskjaer wants to make this summer.

Solskjaer wants Sancho to fill a void on the right wing that Mason Greenwood had temporarily filled towards the end of the season.

Though the 18-year-old sparkled, Greenwood’s long-term future is through the middle and Solskjaer wants the blistering pace of Sancho on the wing in order to rotate his front three.

Borussia Dortmund Training Session
Sancho remains the club’s priority target (Picture: Getty)

Elsewhere, the Norwegian wants to sign a fast centre-back to play alongside Harry Maguire.

Victor Lindelof partnered Maguire throughout last season but neither of them possess the pace to play a high line and Solskjaer wants a faster defender alongside Maguire in order to push his team further up the field.

RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano is a target for the club but there’s doubts whether the Frenchman is ready for Premier League football.

Perhaps most intriguing is Solskjaer’s desire to sign another striker. Odion Ighalo extended his loan at the club in January and he was signed with a view to allowing Solskjaer to spend his budget on other areas of the team.

However, Ighalo’s minutes dried up following the restart and Solskjaer wants a better alternative to Anthony Martial so that the Frenchman can experience genuine competition.

With £40m of Solskjaer’s budget already spent, it looks inevitable that the club will have to sell if they’re to come close to securing their other targets.

Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Andreas Pereira, Chris Smalling, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo are all surplus to requirements and are available for transfer,

However, though there’s interest from many clubs, United have long struggled to flog their deadwood due to the sky-high wages paid at Old Trafford.

Therefore, the club may have to accept lower up-front fees just to get some of the unwanted players of the books, particularly in a post-pandemic world.

Valencia want Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi on season-long loan deal with £16m option to buy

Arsenal are reportedly keen to offload Matteo Guendouzi and Valencia want the midfielder on a season-long loan with an option to buy for £16million.

The 21-year-old fell out of favour with Mikel Arteta after a scuffle with Neal Maupay following the 2-1 loss to Brighton back in June.

Guendouzi didn’t feature for the Gunners after the incident for the rest of the campaign and was absent again in the Community Shield win over Liverpool on Saturday.

According to the Mirror, Valencia want to take the Frenchman on a one-year loan deal which will include an optional clause to purchase him permanently for £16million next summer.

Guendouzi’s representatives have held discussions with the La Liga club, who want a definitive response by next weekend.

However, Arsenal prefer a permanent switch as they aim to raise funds for their other transfer targets.

Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey and a new loan deal for Dani Ceballos – who has returned to Real Madrid – is top of their priority list, meanwhile, centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes’ move to the Emirates looks imminent.

The report states that the club want to offload Guendouzi and fellow outcast Mesut Ozil.

This comes just days after Mikel Arteta announced that in a conversation with Guendouzi in the off-season, he told him he was being handed a fresh start this season.

‘I’ve been really clear that everybody starts from zero. What you did two weeks ago or two years ago, doesn’t really matter. It’s what you are able to contribute to the team now.

‘Everybody is going to have the same opportunities. They have to show with their performance their attitude that they are better than their teammates or somehow contributing with what we want to achieve this season.

‘Yes…I’ve told him [Guendouzi] exactly that. That he’ll be part of the team and at the moment he’s like any other player in our squad. He deserves to be treated exactly the same and I will do that to my best capability.’

Bayer Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz confirms Chelsea target Kai Havertz has left club

Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz has confirmed that he does not expect Kai Havertz to return for training this summer amid speculation the young midfielder is on the verge of joining Chelsea.

Frank Lampard has been keen to make up for lost time in the wake of Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban and the Blues have set their sights on finalising a move for Havertz after wrapping up deals up Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.

It’s understood Havertz agreed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge earlier this month and Chelsea will reportedly pay Leverkusen €80million (£72m) up front plus a further €20m (£18m) in bonuses for the 21-year-old German.

Havertz’s absence from Leverkusen’s pre-season fitness tests on Sunday further fuelled speculation of an impending move to west London and the youngster now expects to be playing in the blue of Chelsea next season.

However, Havertz is currently with the German national side in Stuttgart ahead of their Nations League clashes with Spain and Switzerland, meaning an official announcement may have to be put on hold the time being.

But Bosz comments on Monday morning indicate that Havertz will not be returning to Leverkusen from Germany’s training camp – and that it’s only a matter of time before he is unveiled as a Chelsea player.

‘Kevin Volland and the national players didn’t participate today in training today,’ the Leverkusen head coach said at his press conference.

‘Leon Bailey also wasn’t there. Unfortunately our squad isn’t set yet.

‘I don’t expect Volland (set to join Monaco) and Havertz to train with us again.

‘It’s possible more players will transfer and we definitely still have to add some players.’

Bosz added: ‘As a coach, it would be great if the squad was complete at the start of pre-season, but these days that’s hardly ever the case.

‘Much has changed due to the coronavirus pandemic and that makes things more complex.

‘It’s my responsibility as a coach to deal with it.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign Dayot Upamecano after Manchester United get Donny van de Beek from Ajax

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano once Manchester United complete a deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, according to reports.

United have now agreed a £40.3 million deal with the Dutch club for the 23-year-old and a move could be finalised this week.

United also remain intent on signing Jadon Sancho, however they have still been unable to agree a transfer fee with Borussia Dortmund.

Solskjaer is also looking to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season and according to ESPN, the United manager is pushing to sign Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

The report claims that Solskjaer is ‘prioritising’ a new central defender to play alongside Harry Maguire, while United believe an agreement can be reached with RB Leipzig before the transfer deadline on October 5.

In July, Upamecano signed a new contract with RB Leipzig which keeps him tied to the club until 2023.

However, reports in Germany claim that the 21-year-old’s new deal includes a €42m (£37.6m) release clause which will be active from next summer.

United, meanwhile, are open to offloading Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo before the end of the transfer window.

ESPN also reports that Solskjaer is also ‘concerned’ by the reliability of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, which is why he is keen to recruit a new centre-back for United this summer.

Speaking earlier this month, former United midfielder Paul Scholes urged Solskjaer to strengthen his options in central defence.

‘I think they could do with a centre half, I’ve said that all along,’ said Scholes.

‘I’m not sure Lindelof going to be good enough as a partner for Maguire. I think they need a dominant defender next to him.

‘Defensively, the full backs are OK. On the ball you’d have to question but defensively they’re OK.

‘I think the defensive record over the last 15, 20 games has been very good, probably one of the best in the league so you have to take that into respect as well.

‘But I still think a dominant centre-half next to Maguire, just to cover for the slight weaknesses he has.’

Mark Bosnich rates Manchester United’s transfer move for Donny van de Beek

Van de Beek's move to United looks imminent

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich says the capture of Donny van de Beek would be a ‘fantastic’ move for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The 23-year-old was left out of Ajax’s pre-season friendly win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday and United are expecting to wrap up a £40million deal for the midfielder imminently.

After helping fire the Eredivisie side to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, Van de Beek carried on his good form last season.

The Netherlands international would have to compete with the likes of Paul Pogba, Fred, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay for his place in the side.

Bosnich believes healthy competition is a good thing and backs the deal as a good opportunity for both parties.

‘I think it would be a fantastic move for both the player and the club.’ Bosnich told Sky Sports.

‘Those that watched the player during his time in Holland have seen the progress that he’s made.

‘I think the way Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] wants to move forward, it’ll work really, really well,’

‘I think he’ll play more often than not. You can tell that Ole is trying to build a squad that will be sufficient for them to challenge on several fronts, not just for one particular competition.

‘He knows from his own experience from being at the club when they won the treble, they had four strikers – himself, Teddy Sheringham, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.

‘It’s very important to make sure you have back-up in each position.’

Neymar speaks out on PSG future after Champions League final heartbreak

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar has confirmed he will be staying at the club for at least another season.

The 28-year-old forward won four pieces of silverware with PSG across the 2019/20 campaign but was denied the trophy he craved the most as Thomas Tuchel’s men were beaten by Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

A distraught Neymar failed to hold back the tears in the aftermath of his side’s crushing 1-0 defeat and the Brazilian’s reaction raised questions about his future in the French capital.

But Neymar wants to go one step further with PSG in Europe next term and has no plans to move on from the club anytime soon.

‘I am staying at PSG next season!’ he told PSG’s official website.

‘And with the ambition to return to the Champions’ League final, this time to win it.

‘I like this idea of doing everything to leave my name in the history books of my club.

‘If people were doubting the presence of PSG as a great European club, those doubts died in Lisbon.

‘We left this city with the feeling of being renewed and confidence in our capacity to win it one day to write an even greater history.’

The Brazil international insists PSG’s loss to Bayern only strengthened the sense of togetherness inside the squad.

‘By returning from Lisbon, in the plane on the way back, we were already excited to see each other again in Paris!’ he added.

‘I will never forget what we shared with this squad.

‘It has formed a family and I am proud.’

Jose Mourinho hails Chelsea boss Frank Lampard as the ‘best professional’ during Spurs’ ‘All or Nothing’ Amazon series

Jose Mourinho named Chelsea manager Frank Lampard as the best professional he’s ever worked with during Spurs’ new ‘All or Nothing’ documentary on Amazon Prime.

Lampard was one of Mourinho’s key players during their time together at Stamford Bridge and the pair helped the club win two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cup trophies.

Lampard is now one of Mourinho’s managerial rivals in the Premier League and the former England midfielder guided Chelsea to two victories over Spurs last season.

But before Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Spurs in December, Mourinho privately praised his former player during a conversation with Christian Eriksen, which was shown in episode three of ‘All or Nothing’ on Amazon Prime.

During a scene where Mourinho was watching Lampard’s press conference with Spurs’ players, Eriksen asked the Tottenham manager: ‘Good guy?’

Mourinho replied: ‘Frank? Yeah.

Mourinho then added: ‘Professional as a player. The best I’ve ever seen.’

Mourinho then said ‘it’s kind of’ and then made a gesture towards Eriksen which emphaised how focused Lampard was.

Mourinho also incorrectly predicted that Chelsea would ‘s*** themselves’ in the race to secure a top-four finish.

Speaking before the 2-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mourinho told his players: ‘We win tomorrow, Chelsea lose in Manchester City, they s*** themselves.

‘Nine points, they come here in December, they s*** themselves. We can make top four.’

Chelsea went on to finish the season in fourth place, while Mourinho guided Spurs to sixth, seven points behind Lampard’s side.

Amazon Prime Video’s new series will take sports fans behind the scenes of Tottenham Hotspur and follow all of the key events, including the arrival of Jose Mourinho as the club’s new head coach.

David de Gea or Dean Henderson? Mark Bosnich predicts who will be Manchester United’s number one next season

Dean Henderson looks on in Manchester United pre-season training

Mark Bosnich has backed Dean Henderson to take over from David de Gea as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper by the end of next season.

De Gea, 29, formerly regarded as one of the finest shot-stoppers in world football, has suffered a dramatic dip in form over the last 12 months and is now fighting for his United future following Henderson’s return.

Earlier this month, Henderson put pen to paper on a new five-year contract at Old Trafford after impressing across a two-year loan spell with Sheffield United and the 23-year-old now feels he’s ready to challenge De Gea for the number one spot.

Sevilla v Manchester United - UEFA Europa League Semi Final

And unless De Gea starts playing ‘out of his skin’ again for United, Bosnich believes Henderson will be the man in possession of the gloves before too long.

‘The fact that he’s signed such a long-term deal, he’s obviously part of their long-term plans,’ former United ‘keeper Bosnich told Sky Sports.

‘Whether or not it’ll be at the start of the season, I think at some time during next season – unless De Gea starts off and he’s doing absolutely fantastic – but I do believe that Dean Henderson will take over.

‘Obviously De Gea, over the last 12 months, hasn’t been quite the goalkeeper he is and I believe that now the contract is done and signed, if De Gea continues his in and out form, that Dean Henderson will take over.

‘The only thing that will stop that is De Gea performing out of his skin if he starts again – and that’s only good for the club either way.’

Mark Bosnich speaks at an event with Chelsea

Henderson is relishing the chance to prove himself at United after emerging as one of the Premier League’s top young goalkeepers across the 2019/20 campaign.

‘The pathway that I have been on for the past five years has been fantastic for my development and the invaluable loan period at Sheffield United has been part of that,’ the English shot-stopper said.

‘The goalkeeping department at United is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I look forward to working with the group. The faith that the manager and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my progression as a goalkeeper.

‘I’ll be giving everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club.

‘Now I am looking forward to joining up with the England squad and then preparing for the season ahead.‘

On Henderson’s new long-term deal, United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: ‘Dean is a fantastic young keeper with the attitude and work-rate to keep improving every day.

‘We are in a strong position within the goalkeeping department and that gives us the competition for places that we are looking for in the squad.

‘Dean is another great example of the type of player who has come through the Academy and truly understands what it means to be at Manchester United.

‘We are all looking forward to working with Dean and continuing to develop his talent.‘
