Erik ten Hag identifies Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia as his first Manchester United signing

Erik ten Tag has identified Feyenoord full-back Tyrell Malacia as his first Manchester United signing this summer.

Wholesale changes are expected at Old Trafford ahead of the 2022-23 season with ten Hag set to take the reins from interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of the current campaign.

According to The Mirror, the Dutchman is desperate for United to sign 22-year-old left-back Malacia to challenge Luke Shaw for a spot in the first-team.

Malacia has developed into a cult hero at Feyenoord, comfortable on the ball going forward while also tenacious in defence with Ten Hag eager to add hungry, young players to the United squad which has faltered so often this season.

Ten Hag tried to sign the Netherlands international for Ajax last summer but the intense rivalry between the Amsterdam club and Feyenoord meant no deal could be done.

Feyenoord v Olympique Marseille: Semi Final Leg One - UEFA Europa Conference League

But a £20million offer will be enough to tempt Feyenoord into doing business this summer.

Ten Hag also wants to sign a right-back this summer to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with the new manager not convinced the former Crystal Palace starlet will suit his style next season.

United have attempted to sign Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui, who is out of contract at the end of the season but are set to lose out with Bayern Munich set to win the race for his signature.

United are also in the market for at least one central midfielder with a striker also a priority with Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Frenkie de Jong and Darwin Nunez among those said to be on the club’s shortlist.

EFL round-up: Bournemouth boost promotion hopes, Wigan win title and Wimbledon suffer first relegation

Nottingham Forest v Swansea City - Sky Bet Championship

With the football season coming to a close, the race for promotion and the fight for survival up and down the English Football League is getting increasingly more tense.

League One concluded today, whilst this weekend marks the penultimate round of the Championship and League Two, so here’s everything you need to know:

Championship: Bournemouth vs Forest going to the wire

Fulham’s immediate return to the Premier League was already confirmed earlier in April and they will almost certainly be crowned Championship champions if they avoid defeat to Luton Town on Monday evening.

Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest are set to battle it out for the second automatic promotion place after each side claimed impressive wins over Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City respectively.

AFC Bournemouth v Leicester City - Premier League

The two sides play each other on Tuesday night and unless the Cherries claim victory it will all come down to the last weekend of the season.

Huddersfield Town have confirmed their place in the play-offs already and will be joined by Luton if the Hatters can beat the Cottagers.

The final play-off spot is currently occupied by Sheffield United, with Middlesbrough and Millwall still in with a shout of snatching it.

Down the other end of the table, Derby County, Peterborough United and Barnsley have already been relegated to League One.

League One: Wigan win but Dons go down

Wigan Athletic are returning to the second tier in style after sealing the League One title with a 3-0 win at Shrewsbury Town.

They will be joined by Rotherham United whose 2-0 victory over Gillingham sealed automatic promotion but also relegated the Gills to League Two

10-man Plymouth Argyle dropped out of the play-off places after getting thrashed 5-0 by third-placed MK Dons, who will now face Wycombe Wanderers after the Chairboys took Plymouth’s place after a late win over Burton Albion.

Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland will contest the other play-off tie after finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Crewe Alexandra’s relegation was already long confirmed, and they will be joined in the fourth-tier next season by Gillingham, Doncaster Rovers, and AFC Wimbledon, the first time the Dons have ever been relegated.

Northampton Town v Exeter City - Sky Bet League Two

League Two: Play-off battle wide open

A draw at Northampton Town was enough for Exeter City to move top of the League Two table, just a point ahead of Forest Green Rovers who lost 3-1 to Harrogate Town.

Both sides have already been promoted, but the final automatic spot is wide open, with Northampton, Bristol Rovers, Port Vale, Mansfield Town and Swindon Town all separated by just three points.

Just outside the play-offs, Sutton United, Tranmere Rovers and Salford City are still dreaming of promotion.

All this is subject to change however, with Port Vale, Mansfield and Salford all set to play on Monday ahead of the last day of games next Saturday.

Meanwhile, Oldham Athletic and Scunthorpe United’s relegation to non-league was already confirmed, with the former’s 116-year stay in the Football League coming to an end.

‘What he’s done is a miracle’ – Jose Enrique praises Eddie Howe ahead of Newcastle vs Liverpool

Newcastle United v Aston Villa - Premier League
Eddie Howe became Newcastle manager after the Saudi Arabia backed takeover (Photo: Getty)

Former Newcastle defender Jose Enrique has praised Eddie Howe for turning the club’s fortunes around ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Saturday.

Howe moved to St. James Park last November, after the dismissal of Steve Bruce and the completion of the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover, with the Magpies 19th in the Premier League.

Since then, the club has embarked on an amazing run of form which has seen them lose just three of their last 16 games and they remain unbeaten at home in 2022, and Howe has received plenty of plaudits for his work.

‘Confidence wise the team was very, very low,’ Enrique told Metro Sport via Lord Ping.

‘They didn’t trust in the previous owner anymore, they were in last position, it was very difficult for them to get out and what he’s [Howe] done is a miracle.

Liverpool FC Training Session and Press Conference
Jose Enrique played for Newcastle from 2007 to 2011 before joining Liverpool (Photo: Getty)

‘No one would have put a £1 bet on that. Not myself, not you, not anybody, not even Eddie. It’s incredible what he’s done.

While Howe has masterminded the turnaround, without the players signed in January, that include Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier, Enrique isn’t so sure Newcastle would have survived the drop.

He added: ‘The key was getting the right players because money doesn’t bring success. It helps but bringing in the right players does and that’s what Eddie did. They trusted him and he bought the right players.

‘I believe Eddie, [Pep] Guardiola, [Jurgen] Klopp, anybody that will have gone to that club and didn’t sign anyone in January would have gone down.

‘The players believe in his playing style and signing the right players in January was key.

Newcastle United v Leicester City - Premier League
Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in January in a deal worth up to £40million (Photo: Getty)

‘Bruno, we know how good he is now but we have to remember at the start he wasn’t playing why because Eddie is the kind of manager that will say, “Ok we play a different way here than in France, so I’ll give you little by little game time so you can adapt to my style and to my team,” and now he’s flying, he’s doing an incredible job.’

Newcastle are currently ninth in the table and an unprecedented win over quadruple chasing Liverpool would go a long way to securing the club’s first top-half finish in the Premier League since 2018.

Despite all that he has achieved, Enrique has urged the Newcastle supporters and owners to be patient with Howe and to not expect overnight success even if they are now the richest club in the world.

‘Eddie has a problem now. Why? Because if he finishes top 10 with just one transfer window, people will think if they end up spending £150 million in the summer or whatever, top six must be realistic.

‘Realistically for me, top 10 again for Newcastle next year should be the target. If you can get top eight or top six even, then amazing but step by step. The owners must be patient and trust in the project.

‘I really love Eddie, he is the right fit for them. He’s a top manager and obviously he still needs to prove himself at European level, but I really believe he can take Newcastle all the way.

‘A joke’ – Kevin Campbell slams Bruno Fernandes decision in Arsenal clash

Bruno Fernandes

Kevin Campbell has slammed the decision not to send Bruno Fernandes off after his ‘dangerous’ tackle on Nuno Tavares.

Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday and things could have been a lot worse for the visitors had Fernandes seen red.

A crunching late tackle from the Portuguese midfielder on Tavares saw referee Craig Pawson hand out a yellow card, but former Gunner Campbell believes he was lucky to stay on the pitch.

‘I have seen some challenges this season that don’t warrant red cards but have got them,’ he told Football Insider.

‘Nobody can tell me that Fernandes should not have been sent off there. He was like British Rail… He was that late.

Bruno Fernandes

‘I don’t want the referee to spoil the occasion by sending players off but the fact of the matter is he could have broken his leg. It was that dangerous.

‘The fact is was only a yellow is a joke. I have seen players sent off for a lot, lot less.

‘Is it the referee, is it VAR? I give up. The referee was right there and he did not give it. Pawson bottled it. He bottled it because it is Fernandes and Man United.’

Fernandes found himself in hot water a few days earlier too in the 4-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool at Anfield, also picking up a yellow card.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright was quick to condemn his behaviour for ‘lashing out’ at players.

Speaking on the Ringer FC podcast, the former England striker said: ‘Seeing Bruno Fernandes just lashing out at people, lashing out at Trent really wildly, and then the challenge on Nuno, you look at it and you think to yourself, “that’s not what Manchester United need from you, my friend”.

‘Manchester United need a lot more than you going around trying to top people. He was lucky not to get sent off. But this is what it’s come to.’

Liverpool and Manchester City face tricky away trips as the title race continues to take twists and turns in the closing stages of the season.

At the other end of the table, Burnley face a crunch clash with Watford hoping to put further pressure on Frank Lampard’s Everton looking to beat the drop.

Betfair Ambassador Dimitar Berbatov has had a look at the forthcoming Premier League contests and given us his predictions…

Newcastle v Liverpool

Newcastle have done a really good job recently, they are a great club with great fans and it was always difficult to go there and play. If they are pumped and ready then can cause any team trouble. I can see a surprise in this one. There’s a lot of pressure on Liverpool to get a result, but St. James’ Park isn’t an easy place to go.

Prediction 2-2.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Newcastle 8/1, Draw 4/1, Liverpool 4/9

Watford v Burnley

Burnley have turned things around and this is another massive match for them. Things haven’t been going well for Watford. This could be a huge three points for Burnley and I think they will want it more.

Prediction 0-2.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Watford 9/5, Draw 12/5, Burnley 9/5

Burnley

Southampton v Crystal Palace

Both teams have had ups and downs this season and they are now pretty much playing for nothing. I hope this means we get to see a good open game with some nice football on show. I can see the home side winning.

Prediction 2-1.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Southampton 6/4, Draw 5/2, Crystal Palace 11/5

Aston Villa v Norwich

Aston Villa haven’t had their best time recently, they will be looking at this one as a game they can win and get some confidence back. Things haven’t gone well for Norwich and I can’t see anything other than a Villa win.

Prediction 1-0.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Aston Villa 2/5, Draw 4/1, Norwich 17/2

Wolves v Brighton

I have really enjoyed watching Brighton play this season. Full credit to Wolves as well, they have done really well and haven’t really got a lot of credit for what they’re doing. I can see this one being a draw.

Prediction 1-1.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Wolves 9/5, Draw 9/4, Brighton 2/1

Leeds v Man City

Leeds could do with getting a result to make life that little bit easier, but lets not forget that City are looking to hold on to first place and win the title. This is where you want something to happen, you want a result for the underdog, which would be a massive result for Leeds, but City are just too good. They have so much talent and they should get the job done here.

Prediction 1-3.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Leeds 10/1, Draw 5/1, Man City 1/3

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - APRIL 23: Gabriel Jesus celebrates with teammates Rodrigo (hidden) and Raheem Sterling of Manchester City after scoring their side's fourth goal from a penalty during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Watford at Etihad Stadium on April 23, 2022 in Manchester, England. Manchester City remain on course to defend their title (Picture: Gareth Copley/Getty Images,)

Spurs v Leicester

I want to see Spurs in the Champions League, I want to see Conte deliver a top four spot and on top of that I want them to build a winning mentality. At home they should beat Leicester who have a big game coming up next week in the Europa Conference.

Prediction 2-0.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Spurs 1/2, Draw 4/1, Leicester 13/2

Everton v Chelsea

Oh my God, Everton are in real danger of getting relegated. It’s going to be tense and nerve wrecking, they should never be in this situation. I like Frank Lampard and I like the way he coaches, I would like to see them be safe. They will be ready for war in this game because they need the points and I predict a surprise.

Prediction 1-0.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Everton 9/2, Draw 3/1, Chelsea 8/11

West Ham v Arsenal

This will be a good game. West Ham have a massive game in the Europa League next week, so I think they will be more focused on that, however I can see it being a draw.

Prediction 1-1.

Betfair Exchange Odds: West Ham 4/1, Draw 3/1, Arsenal 4/5

Man United v Brentford

This is one of those games that Man United should be winning. You have to win these games. Chances for a top four spot are now very slim, but that doesn’t matter, they have to win this one at home. It’s a must win.

Prediction 2-1.

Betfair Exchange Odds: Man United 8/11, Draw 16/5, Brentford 4/1

Paul Merson believes Chelsea star ‘doesn’t love the club’ and expects angry fan reaction

Paul Merson feels Antonio Rudiger could receive a bad reception from Chelsea fans after deciding to leave the club.

The talented defender will leave the Blues at the end of the season having failed to agree a new deal and is expected to sign for Real Madrid.

Thomas Tuchel has made it clear he’s disappointed to lose the German and former Arsenal star Merson feels Rudiger clearly doesn’t love the club or he would have stayed.

‘Antonio Rudiger is the one player Chelsea couldn’t afford to lose, but he clearly didn’t love the club enough to stay,’ Merson told the Daily Star.

‘He is risking the wrath of the fans now because he is turning down a lot of money and leaving them in the lurch, but let’s be honest: it’s been on the cards for a long, long time.

‘I called this one months ago. I don’t think Rudiger ever had any intention of signing; not after he was frozen out by Frank Lampard.

‘I know plenty has changed since then. Thomas Tuchel came in, brought him back into the team, and they won the Champions League.’

Despite becoming a key player under Tuchel and Chelsea offering him a new contract, Rudiger is seeking a new challenge away from the Premier League.

Rudiger put in a near-faultless display in the 1-1 draw away to Manchester United on Thursday but Merson feels he could be in for a frosty reception from Blues fans when Chelsea next play at home to Wolves next Saturday.

‘But I think he had already made his mind up. His contract was already running down and other clubs would already have been expressing an interest,’ Merson continued.

‘You don’t wait all that time, refusing to sign, losing all that money you would have got by signing on improved terms, just to turn around and stay. It’s serious money he has turned down.

‘He would have been the most well-paid defender in the club’s history. But he doesn’t love the club, does he? Or he’d have stayed.

‘And he’s an unbelievable defender. Thiago Silva helps him, but I think he helps Thiago Silva as well. They are so good together in a three.

‘It will be interesting to see how the fans are going to be now when he plays at Stamford Bridge. I don’t see them being too happy with him.’

Todd Boehly consortium to be named preferred bidder to buy Chelsea despite late bid from Jim Ratcliffe

A consortium led by LA Dodgers owner Todd Boehly is to be named the preferred bidder for Chelsea.

The Premier League side were put up for sale in March after owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned for his links with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe tabled a last-minute bid to buy Chelsea on Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Ineos chief  confirmed.

Ratcliffe is understood to have held talks with Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck on Thursday before submitting a major offer for the Stamford Bridge club.

But his offer, which is said to have prompted confusion among rival bidders, arrives weeks after an initial deadline of 18 March.

Boehly has reportedly tabled an offer of around £2.5bn for the club with his net worth standing at (£3.6bn) according to Forbes.

Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale on March 2, amid Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine.

The 55-year-old was then sanctioned by the UK Government on March 10, with Downing Street claiming to have proven links between the Russian-Israeli billionaire and Vladimir Putin.

Abramovich has owned Chelsea for 19 years, leading the club to 21 trophies in a glittering tenure.

‘I didn’t like what he did’ – Kevin Campbell still wants Granit Xhaka to leave Arsenal

Arsenal's Granit Xhaka
Xhaka has endured a tough relationship with Arsenal fans (Picture: Getty)

Kevin Campbell says he still wants Granit Xhaka to leave Arsenal despite the midfielder’s strong form this season.

Xhaka, 29, has endured a difficult relationship with the Gunners supporters ever since he removed his shirt and threw it to the ground following criticism in a home match in October 2019.

However, this season he has played a significant part in the Gunners’ top-four charge and scored from a long-range strike in Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Manchester United.

But Campbell, the former Arsenal forward, has not forgiven Xhaka for his misdemeanours and thinks he should not be at the club.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: ‘Listen, he is playing well and the Arsenal fans are showing their appreciation.

‘It is not that the fans don’t like him. It is what he did. The fans were against that. Any fans who saw one of their players throw the shirt down would react the same. There would be a rift.

Arsenal's Granit Xhaka
Xhaka enjoyed the celebrations after his goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win (Picture: Getty)

‘The team are doing a lot better at the moment and Xhaka is doing his job. If a player is doing the business the fans will want you.

‘Die-hards like myself would prefer him not to be there but that is just me. I didn’t like what he did.’

Following the incident three years ago, Xhaka’s captaincy was removed and he appeared to be on his way out of the Emirates until Mikel Arteta succeeded Unai Emery and convinced him to stay.

The Swiss star was once again close to an exit last summer when Roma registered an interest in signing him for £15 million. However, Arsenal were reluctant to let him leave without a replacement.

This term, he is enjoying his best campaign in a red and white shirt as his partnership with Thomas Partey in midfield has formed the bedrock to the team’s Champions League chase.

In Saturday’s win over United, Xhaka appeared to revel in the adulation from the home supporters following his goal. Arteta hopes it was a sign that he has fully mended relations with the Arsenal following.

Arteta said via Arsenal.com: ‘I was dreaming of that because he deserves it. If every fan, or individual spent five, ten minutes with Granit – or even two minutes is enough – they will understand the person that he is, the professional that he is and how much he cares about the club.’

Ralf Rangnick set for Austria national team job alongside Manchester United consultancy role

Ralf Rangnick is in line to become head coach of Austria’s national team alongside his consultancy role with Manchester United, according to reports.

The 63-year-old has agreed to take up a two-year role with United this summer once Erik ten Hag replaces him as manager.

But according to Austrian outlet Kurier, Rangnick has now also reached an agreement with the president of Austria’s football association (OFB).

The report claims that the OFB has scheduled a presentation this Friday where Ragnick will be officially confirmed as the new manager of their national side. Austria failed to make the World Cup in Qatar later this year and are now targeting qualification for Euro 2024.

United, meanwhile, are due to play Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, after which Rangnick will have just three games remaining in charge.

The responsibilities of Rangnick’s consultancy role are yet to be confirmed but the German has insisted that he is prepared to held Ten Hag as much as he needs.

‘Yes I will be [here next season],’ Rangnick said this week.

Erik ten Hag will replace Ralf Rangnick as Manchester United manger at the end of the season

‘I’m looking forward to working in that advisory role and obviously help Erik as much as he wants it himself.

‘So far we haven’t been able to speak with each other and we have had no contact, he has his focus on Ajax, I have my focus on Manchester United here.

‘But obviously I’m more than willing and prepared to help both Erik and whomever in the club in order to change everything for the better.’

Ten Hag will see out the season with Ajax before moving to United this summer and Rangnick has hailed the move for the Dutchman as ‘a really positive appointment’.

‘The club has been very thorough in its search to fill the position and I must say I think Erik is a very good choice,’ Rangnick said in his programme notes ahead of United’s clash with Chelsea on Thursday evening.

‘From all those I have spoken to within football who know him and, of course, from my own impression of the style of football he has his teams playing, I see it as a really positive appointment.

‘Erik will come in at the end of this season so that he and his staff have a full pre-season in which to get to know the squad ahead of the next campaign.

‘With time and with opportunities to build and shape the team as he desires, I am very confident there will be improvements under Erik’s management.

‘However, we must not forget there are still games remaining in this season and, while we have to be realistic and admit that securing Champions League qualification is going to be unlikely over our last four fixtures, it is still very important that we finish this current campaign as strongly as we possibly can.’

Ian Wright names the Man Utd players Erik ten Hag can build his team around

Ian Wright

Ian Wright believes Erik ten Hag has plenty of ‘very good’ players to build his team around at Manchester United in order to succeed.

Last week, United finally confirmed Ten Hag as their new permament manager who will take over the reins from interim boss Ralf Rangnick in the summer.

Ten Hag will inherit a squad who have largely underperformed this season and look set to miss out on the Champions League for his first campaign in charge.

The Ajax boss’ first decision will be deciding which of the deadwood he needs to move on and which players he wants to make a key part of his plans, and Wright believes there is plenty of top talent to tap into.

Speaking on the Kelly & Wrighty Show, Wright said: ‘So you think to yourself, if Ten Hag can come in, with these very good players, because they are very good players… I like Dalot, I like Telles who’s come in, Harry Maguire with the right people [around him].

‘Of course, if you give him the right protection, we’ve seen that he’s going to be okay. Scott McTominay’s got that engine, Fred we’ve seen him play very well.

Manchester United

‘Then up front you’ve got Ronaldo, you’ve got Sancho and then Rashford once he gets his form. So you’ve got players that if they’re organised in a structure, and they start playing in the structure and they start getting confidence in it, they will beat teams.’

Ten Hag will also have decisions to make on players who are currently on loan with reports suggesting Donny van de Beek could be brought back in from the cold having previously played under him at Ajax.

The 52-year-old has signed a contract that runs until June 2025 with the option to extend for a further year.

‘It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead,’ Ten Hag said.

‘I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve.

‘It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.’
