Roy Hodgson makes Premier League history with Crystal Palace’s win at Manchester United

Roy Hodgson made Premier League history when his Crystal Palace side pulled off a shock victory at Manchester United on Saturday.
Joachim Andersen’s sublime strike was enough for Palace to beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford, and condemn the Red Devils to yet another defeat.
It’s another huge setback for Erik ten Hag, and a hugely surprising result given that the Eagles were humbled by United 3-0 just five days earlier in the Carabao Cup.
It also meant that Hodgson has become the first manager in history to go unbeaten in five consecutive Premier League games at Old Trafford.
The run started back in 2018 with a goalless draw and continued with 2-1 and 3-1 wins for the South Londoners, before the 76-year-old was replaced by Patrick Vieira in 2021.
He kept the streak going with another goalless draw while in charge of Watford in February 2022, which has now been followed by this most recent victory.
‘The way the players went about the game today is really praise worthy and has given me enormous pleasure,’ the former England boss told BBC Match of the Day.
‘They have to be so disciplined and so organised. It would be asking too much to come here and dominate.
‘Joachim Andersen is a wonderful technician. It was only a half chance. He had to quickly get his feet right and have the confidence to put his foot through the ball. I’m trying to push him forward for goal of the week!
‘I must add that the real satisfaction is seeing the players work so incredibly hard. The players were tiring enormously towards the end.’
The result has moved Palace up to ninth in the table, two points ahead of United who have now lost five of their opening nine games of the season.
‘I’m really delighted for my players. Their efforts today were exceptional. We scored a terrific goal and as a result we kept that lead throughout the whole game,’ Hodgson told Sky Sports.
‘On Tuesday we didn’t get a chance to show how good we can be. To win at Old Trafford is an achievement. This is one of the temples of football.
‘A lot of running and effort went into the game. One or two of our players had run themselves into the ground. The back four will be first to pay credit to front players and midfield players.’

‘Ruins the game!’ – Gary Neville fumes after VAR sends Liverpool star off against Spurs

Manchester United legend Gary Neville was not happy after Curtis Jones was sent off by VAR during Liverpool’s clash at Tottenham on Saturday evening.
Just 24 minutes into the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Jones was booked for a bad foul on Yves Bissouma.
Many at the ground winced when the challenge was made given how the Liverpool midfielder’s studs went into the Spurs star’s shin and soon the Video Assistant Referee was called.
Referee Simon Hooper checked the incident on the pitch-side monitor before cancelling the yellow card and showing Jones a straight red, much to the annoyance of the player and his manager Jurgen Klopp.
Though some agreed with Hooper’s decision, Neville wasn’t convinced, saying on Sky Sports: ‘A yellow is right.
‘I know when you’re doing someone, I’ve done it myself. He wasn’t there to do someone.
‘He is over the top, the ball is moving and it is certainly not a red, it looks worse than it actually is. His foot slips, it is not a red for me and this will ruin the game.

‘I maybe wrong, but I just do not know any more. In slow motion, you will come to the conclusion it is a red card. I do not think he has gone over the top to do him.’
Neville’s Sky colleagues agreed, with former Liverpool and Tottenham star Jamie Redknapp adding: ‘I think the red card is extremely harsh.
‘Every time you go into a tackle like this you are risking going over the top of the ball. Once he doesn’t get it right it doesn’t look good but he doesn’t mean to hurt him and yellow card would suffice.’
Ex-Spurs player Andros Townsend concurred: ‘Letter of the law, the force it has to be a red card.
‘But he does get enough of the ball and for me, and for a lot of players – football is a contact game, as soon as you get the ball, the rest is history.’

Manchester United winger Antony will not be picked for Crystal Palace game despite returning to training

Manchester United winger Antony will not be included in the squad taking on Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Brazilian international has not featured since 23 August, placed on a mutual leave of absence following domestic abuse allegations. Antony faces allegations of assault made by his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin.
The 23-year-old returned to England this week and attended a voluntary interview with Greater Manchester Police.
Antony has strongly denied all accusations – including those made by two further women.
In a statement released on Friday, United confirmed Antony has returned to training and his available for selection.
‘As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection, while police inquiries proceed,’ the club statement read.
‘This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.’

While Antony is back among the squad, The Sun report he will not be involved on Saturday when United take on Palace at Old Trafford.
United’s statement was released shortly before Erik ten Hag addressed the media.
The Dutchman, who signed Antony from former club Ajax for £85million last year, told reporters: ‘We make the statement so I refer to the statement, everything has been made clear in the statement.
‘No, I don’t think it’s a distraction [on the rest of the squad]. We will focus on the games. He will do as well.’
Asked when Antony could play again, he added: ‘On Saturday, he will be back in training, so tomorrow. I have to see, but I think, yeah [he’s fit].’
Antony started all four of United’s Premier League games prior to his leave of absence. In his debut season at Old Trafford, the Brazilian scored eight times in 44 appearances.

Marcus Rashford names Man Utd team-mate who has left him ‘super excited’

Marcus Rashford has named the Manchester United summer signing that has left him ‘super excited’.
The Red Devils brought in a handful of new players ahead of the 2023-24 campaign with Erik ten Hag looking to build on last term’s third-place Premier League finish, in a season which also saw United win their first trophy since 2017.
Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana were United’s three main signings while Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon came in on loan and United also decided to bring back free agent Jonny Evans and sign a back-up goalkeeper.
Rashford has been particularly impressed by Denmark international forward Hojlund and is looking forward to developing a partnership with his team-mate.
‘I am honestly super excited about it,’ Rashford told Premier League Productions.
‘At times last year, we were going on counter-attacks and we would just see shirts of other bodies, and usually, the only the cut-back that was on was to Bruno [Fernandes] who was arriving later.
‘Whereas this year, you have to understand the dynamics have changed, so we have spoken to each other and done a little bit of work off the pitch, probably that the coaching staff don’t even know, between [just] me and him.
‘I just want to understand his game and for him to understand my game as quickly as possible. So far it has been good and we obviously had the unlucky one at Brighton that got disallowed, but then in the following game we’ve got one where we have combined for a goal, so I am very happy for him.
‘I’m sure it is a relationship that will help both players, so I am excited for it, excited for the future and I am also so excited that we have so many games coming up because we have so many opportunities to show who we are.
‘He is a big, strong, physical lad, he has good finishing abilities. So when the chances do come to him, he will score goals.’

Six Arsenal stars not spotted in training ahead of Bournemouth clash

Six Arsenal stars were not spotted in training on Friday afternoon ahead of their Premier League clash with Bournemouth.
The Gunners have picked up a number of injury concerns in the last two weeks. Gabriel Martinelli has missed his side’s last three games with Leandro Trossard ruled out ahead of last Sunday’s derby clash against Tottenham.
Declan Rice was forced off at half-time in that game with Bukayo Saka hobbling off before full-time.
Speaking at a press conference, Mikel Arteta confirmed all four have not trained ahead of the club’s final session on Friday afternoon.
He also revealed William Saliba and Fabio Vieira were also fresh doubts ahead of Saturday’s game.
‘Declan hasn’t trained yet, we have a session in an hour, we’ll get more news about him,’ Arteta said. ‘Gabi [Martinelli] hasn’t trained, Leo same situation, Saka, same. They are all in the same pool.’
He continued: ‘Willy had a knock, Fabio wasn’t involved,’ confirmed Arteta. ‘We have to assess them today.’

In a training gallery shared by Arsenal on Friday evening, none of the six were spotted in training ahead of their trip to the Vitality Stadium.
Arsenal are not the only side dealing with a lengthening injury list with Chelsea, Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United all without at least nine members of their squad.
Asked why Arsenal’s problems are suddenly beginning to mount, Arteta said: ‘Different reasons. Some happen in training, some are knocks, some are very small muscular niggles.
‘But as well the load coming from before the national team and then after the national team the load went through the roof and the demands continue to be really high.
‘The fact we had three or four out already didn’t give enough time to some of them to have the exposure they needed.’
‘It’s about now , it’s about Bournemouth which is the most important game of the season we have now,’ Arteta added when asked if next weekend’s game against Manchester City would impact his team selection tomorrow.’

Mikel Arteta hopes to convince Ivan Toney to join Arsenal the same way he landed Declan Rice

Mikel Arteta has a plan to convince Ivan Toney to join Arsenal over their rivals, the same way he lured Declan Rice to the Emirates.
The Brentford striker is currently serving a ban for betting breaches but will return to action in January.
The 27-year-old recently opened the door to a move away from west London with Brentford ready to sanction his sale for a reported fee of £80million.
Arsenal are ready to make a move for the striker who netted 20 Premier League goals last season but will face competition from London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham. Chelsea are still in need of a reliable goal scorer up front despite their heavy spending over the last year while Spurs remain in the market for a new no9 following Harry Kane’s departure.
Manchester United have also been credited with interest in his services in the past.
Toney will likely have no shortage of suitors in January but the Mirror report Arteta hopes to convince the striker to head for north London.
The Gunners boss plans to sell Toney his ambition and vision for the club, hopeful it will be enough to convince him to reject rival clubs.

Arteta had such success in the summer with the club record signing of Declan Rice.
Treble-winners Manchester City made a late move to sign the England international from West Ham but Rice’s preference remained a move to Arsenal, eager to play under Arteta.
Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes Toney is the only realistic option for his former side In January.
‘Only Ivan Toney is available for them in January – there aren’t many centre forwards around in the world. They’re a dying breed.
‘Years ago you had Michael Owen, Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Fowler were getting 20 to 30 goals a season and they didn’t get a million England caps. Ian Wright and Les Ferdinand too. Now you get to 20 goals in the Premier League and you play for England.
‘Toney is a good player – he can hold the ball up, he’s good in the air. Arsenal might have to go for him. But there are not a million centre forwards around.’

Claude Makelele confirms his Chelsea departure after ‘mutual agreement’ with club

Claude Makelele has confirmed he has left his post at Chelsea after a mutual agreement to move on from Stamford Bridge.
The former France international, who made over 200 appearances for the club during one of their most successful periods, returned to west London in 2019 taking up a role as technical mentor and youth coach.
The 50-year-old has worked closely with Chelsea’s academy stars but he becomes the latest figure at the club to move on in what has been a period of significant change since the club’s takeover last summer.
In a brief statement released on Twitter, Makelele confirmed his exit.
‘After four fulfilling years, Chelsea and I decided, by mutual consent, that it is time for me to seek a fresh, new challenge.
‘I do want to thank the fans for their affection. Blue will always be the colour of my heart, I will share more once I have set my mind on the next chapter.’
Makelele’s exit follows that of coach Bruno Saltor, who stepped up as caretaker boss for one game last season against Liverpool before Frank Lampard’s return as interim manager.

The Spaniard arrived as part of Graham Potter’s staff but in explaining his departure, Mauricio Pochettino explained last week he ‘did not belong’ to his backroom team.
‘It was a decision that was made between the club and Bruno,’ Pochettino said last week.
‘He did not belong to my coaching staff, and so it is the best decision for him and the club.’
Chelsea secured a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, setting up a meeting with Blackburn Rovers in the round of 16.
The Blues make the short journey to Craven Cottage in the Premier League on Monday night, having taken just five points from their opening six games so far this season.

Carabao Cup round-up: Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all win but Man City crash out with defeat to Newcastle

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all booked their spots in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday night while champions Manchester City crashed out with a shock 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
Arsenal travelled to Brentford and Reiss Nelson got them off to the perfect start as he fired the Gunners ahead on eight minutes.
It was eventually enough for Mikel Arteta’s side to seal a 1-0 victory as Aaron Ramsdale, who recently lost the No.1 spot to David Raya, recorded a clean sheet and Emile Smith Rowe picked up valuable minutes after being handed a start.
Chelsea locked horns with Brighton at Stamford Bridge and the Seagulls had two massive chances in the first half after errors from both Robert Sanchez and Moises Caicedo, but Joao Pedro and Ansu Fati could not find the back of the net.
Brighton paid for those missed opportunities as Nicolas Jackson fired Chelsea ahead in the second half – and he had the ball in the back of the net for a second time after the hour mark – but it was ruled out for offside as it ended 1-0.
Liverpool took on Leicester City and the Championship leaders stunned the Anfield crowd after just three minutes as Kasey McAteer slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher.
But Jurgen Klopp’s men produced a second-half comeback as Cody Gakpo levelled it up after an assist from summer signing Ryan Gravenberch before an absolute rocket from Dominik Szoboslai. Diogo Jota also got on the scoresheet late-on, finishing past Jakub Stolarczyk with a backheel as it finished 3-1.
In the other third-round games, Premier League sides West Ham, Fulham and AFC Bournemouth progressed with victories over Lincoln City, Norwich City and Stoke City respectively.
League One side Lincoln thought they had took the lead against the Hammers in the first-half but the goal was ruled out for offside before Tomas Soucek’s goal sealed a 1-0 win for the east Londoners.
Meanwhile, Everton eliminated Aston Villa with a 2-1 victory in an all-Premier League battle to seal their spot in the fourth round and Blackburn Rovers knocked out Cardiff City with a 5-2 win.

But the biggest shock of the night game at St James’ Park as Pep Guardiola’s side suffered an early third-round exit to Newcastle.
Last season’s treble winners had won every single game in all competitions since losing the Community Shield on penalties to Arsenal heading into the clash against Eddie Howe’s side, but Alexander Isak’s goal saw City suffer a rare defeat.

Mauricio Pochettino has same problem as last two Chelsea managers, reckons Paul Merson

Mauricio Pochettino has little chance of success as he doesn’t know his best team, just like the last two Chelsea managers, believes Arsenal hero Paul Merson.
It has been a difficult start to his tenure at Stamford Bridge for the former Spurs boss, winning just two matches of his first seven, beating Luton in the Premier League and AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup.
Merson feels that Pochettino has the same problem that Frank Lampard and Graham Potter before him had at Stamford Bridge, not knowing his best starting XI.
With an enormous amount of incomings and outgoings over the last year at Chelsea, it is understandable that things are confused, but Merson reckons Pochettino must work out his best team to have a chance of success.
‘It hasn’t changed. Nothing’s changed,’ Merson told Sky Sports of Pochettino’s reign at CHelsea so far. ‘The three football matches they’ve won in 21, was Bournemouth the week after they stayed up [last season], beat Wimbledon in the cup and beat Luton. No disrespect to Luton, but at home you’re expected to beat them.
‘He’s got the same problem as the last two managers at Chelsea – Potter and Lampard – Pochettino is exactly the same, he doesn’t know his best team. If you don’t know your best team I don’t see how you’ve got a chance of winning. Swap here, swap there.’
Merson feels a number of the young players Chelsea have brought in under their current owners are not good enough, and believes they still lack strength in depth, noting that Nicolas Jackson has been struggling in attack, but there has been no option to replace him.
‘I don’t think they’re good enough. For all the players they’ve bought, they haven’t bought a team,’ continued the former England forward.
‘I hope he [Pochettino] gets the time, but you just don’t know with the owners. I think come January they’ve got to bring in more experience. I don’t think all of them are good enough.
‘If you ain’t got a good centre-forward you don’t win nothing. Chelsea haven’t got a centre-forward. I like the kid, I like Jackson, but he’s a young lad. He should have been taken out of the firing line every day of the week by now, but they haven’t got anybody.’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is ‘his own worst enemy,’ says Anton Ferdinand

Anton Ferdinand believes that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is ‘his own worst enemy’ and feels that the Spaniard’s overthinking could cost his side.
Despite going ahead twice in the north London derby on Sunday, Arteta’s team were pegged back on both occasions by Tottenham and were forced to settle with a 2-2 draw.
It continues Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season, but they now sit four points off Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after the champions’ 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest.
Having pushed Pep Guardiola’s side all the way last season, Arteta has made a few changes to his side’s set-up this season. David Raya looks to have replaced Aaron Ramsdale in goal, while the Gunners boss appears to be trying to implement a more attacking midfield three with Martin Odegaard playing alongside new summer signings Declan Rice and Kai Havertz.
While Ferdinand believes that the chopping and changing could hurt his Arsenal side, the former Premier League defender still believes Arteta is the right man for the job.
‘At times I think he overthinks,’ he said speaking on FIVE’s YouTube channel. ‘He said it himself that he is obsessed with different formations and wanting to be the best.
‘You need to be like that but I feel like it can sometimes cloud his judgement when it comes to in-game management and he overthinks a bit.
‘But overall it’s fantastic what he’s doing. He’s bringing in younger players who will make them better in time.
‘You can see a clear identity not only in terms of the playing style but in terms of the culture and the direction of the football.
‘Last year they challenged for the title. This year, I know they have spent a lot of money and there is more pressure, however, he’s changed the club’s fortunes and the mentality of the fanbase to go ‘we are in it [the title race] again.”
Despite some critics, Arteta appears steadfast in his approach, even suggesting after his side’s win against Everton that he would consider substituting goalkeepers during a game.
Arsenal travel to Brentford in the third round of the Carabao Cup tonight before facing Bournemouth away in the league on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag explains decision to give Sofyan Amrabat full Manchester United debut at full-back

Erik ten Hag says Sofyan Amrabat is the kind of player who will do any job a manager asks of him, as the Morocco international makes his first Manchester United start at left-back.
The summer signing from Fiorentina is best known for his skills as a defensive midfielder, which is where he is expected to feature most in the years to come for the Red Devils.
However, after making his Premier League debut off the bench against Burnley at the weekend, his first start for his new club came at left-back against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
This is chiefly because of United’s ongoing injury nightmare, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia still out injured and loan signing Sergio Reguilon not at full fitness due to illness.
With Ten Hag needing someone to fill in on the left of a back four, Amrabat was his man, knowing that the versatile, hard-working 27-year-old will do a job.
It is a bit ago he played full-back, I think, normally he is playing midfielder but he can do, he’s a player when a manager needs him he will play,’ Ten Hag told Sky Sports.
‘He will do the job. That’s what Sofyan is. It’s his first game, his debut. I’m really looking forward and he’s looking forward, he wants to play, he wants to give everything.’
Harry Maguire was also handed his first start of the season, with the England international at centre-back alongside Raphael Varane.
The former Leicester man has fallen down the pecking order under Ten Hag, but the Dutchman said he has nothing to prove to him.
‘He doesn’t have to prove, particularly to me, because I know he’s a very good centre-half,’ said Ten Hag of Maguire. ‘But of course at United you have to live certain standards, every day, you have to prove yourself every day, win every day and contribute to that win.’

Chelsea legend Claude Makelele leaves role as technical mentor at Stamford Bridge

Claude Makelele has left his role at Chelsea, where he had been working as a technical mentor and youth coach since 2019.
The 50-year-old was an iconic player at the club, making over 200 appearances for the Blues as they became the dominant force in the Premier League under Jose Mourinho.
The Frenchman won the Premier League title twice with Chelsea, also claiming the FA Cup, two League Cups and finishing runner-up in the 2008 Champions League.
This all came after being a key figure at Real Madrid, winning two La Liga titles and the Champions League with the Spanish giants.
The former holding midfielder returned to Chelsea in 2019 after a spell in charge of Belgian side Eupen, taking on the technical mentor role at Stamford Bridge, working closely with academy players.
There has been significant change at the club since then, with a string of managers and new ownership of the west London side.
Sky Sport’s Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Makelele has now left Chelsea, with his departure coming by mutual consent.
Bruno Saltor has also left the club, having worked as a first team coach under current manager Mauricio Pochettino and former boss Graham Potter.
The Spaniard arrived at Stamford Bridge with Potter, moving from Brighton, and briefly took charge of the team as caretaker after the Englishman was sacked.
He stayed on at the club under the new management team led by Pochettino but his contract has now been terminated amid more upheaval at the struggling outfit.

Aitana Bonmati says Spain want to ‘stick to football’ after World Cup kiss scandal

Aitana Bonmati says Spain want to ‘stick to football’ following the Women’s World Cup kiss scandal involving Luis Rubiales and Jennifer Hermoso.
Spain’s women became champions of the world last month with victory over England in the final but their achievements were largely overshadowed by the inappropriate actions of male Spanish FA (RFEF) president Rubiales.
Rubiales kissed female player Hermoso on the lips during the presentation ceremony – which sparked widespread outrage and forced him to resign.
Spain’s players demanded further changes following the scandal and announced that they would boycott the national team until their implementation.
However, players recently ended their boycott after the RFEF agreed to ‘immediate and profound changes’ – and after beating Sweden in the Nations League on Friday – Spain now face Switzerland on Tuesday.
Speaking ahead of that match, UEFA Women’s Player of the Year and World Cup MVP Bonmati has reflected on the World Cup kiss scandal.
‘We are setting an example on a sporting and social levels, that men and women should be treated equally,’ Bonmati said.
‘The first few days were complicated, with stress, anxiety, but as the days have gone by things have changed. We have now been able to focus on football, which is what we want
‘We want to get back to normality knowing that there are many things to improve, that have been discussed, and that there are commitments on all sides to make this go better and to leave a good legacy and good conditions for all generations to come.
‘(Gender equality) is a global struggle and all the players feel it is a little bit our own. We are here to play football but we have a loudspeaker and a responsibility to leave football and women in a better place than we found it.’

‘I can handle him’ – Crystal Palace star fires warning at Rasmus Hojlund ahead of Manchester United clashes

Manchester United star Rasmus Hojlund has received high praise from his international teammate and Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen.
Palace travel to United twice over the next five days – first for a Carabao Cup clash on Tuesday night and then a Premier League meeting on Saturday afternoon.
Hojlund is set to play a key part for the Red Devils in these fixtures as they look to build up some momentum after a woeful start to the season.
Erik ten Hag’s team have lost four of their opening seven games of the season, though they have looked better since the introduction of summer signing Hojlund who scored his first goal for the club in the 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich.
There is plenty of pressure on the 20-year-old striker who was signed from Atalanta in a deal worth up to £72million, but Andersen believes he is the real deal – though is also hopeful he can keep his Denmark teammate quiet in the next two matches.
‘It’s going to be fun to play against him!’ the Eagles centre-back told Palace’s official website.
‘He’s a young lad with a good character, a lot of energy and really good attributes. He’s quick, he’s strong and he has a lot of energy.

‘It’s not easy to play against a player like him and I think his start [in England] has been really good. He scored last week so I’m really happy for him.
‘Hopefully he’ll score a lot of goals for our national team… but I think I can handle him in the games we’re going to play against each other!’
Historically, Palace have done very poorly against United, but in recent years that has changed somewhat, winning three of their last eight meetings – two of those coming at Old Trafford.
And the last time they met in the League Cup back in 2011, the South Londoners, then of the Championship, shockingly beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s side 2-1 courtesy of a wonder goal from Darren Ambrose.
Roy Hodgson’s men are just a point behind Ten Hag’s in the current table and, as Andersen points out, have talented forwards of their own.
‘[Eberechi] Eze is really difficult with his skills. He’s really good at dribbling. Jordan Ayew is really strong,’ the 27-year-old added.
‘I don’t know if I’ve experienced something like that [playing the same fixture twice in a week] before. Of course it’s difficult to play two games at Old Trafford in one week, but it is what it is.
‘Hopefully we can get some good results. It’s a lot of travel in one week, but that’s how it is!’

Jamie Carragher urges Aaron Ramsdale to leave Arsenal in January transfer window

Jamie Carragher has urged Aaron Ramsdale to leave Arsenal in January after losing his spot in the starting XI to fellow goalkeeper David Raya.
Ramsdale was a key part of Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge last season but has now been benched for the last three games.
Mikel Arteta has opted to start summer signing Raya instead and the Spaniard has already kept two clean sheets.
Carragher feels that Ramsdale should now look to leave the Emirates when the transfer window reopens this winter.
‘I think he will be [leaving in January], if he got an opportunity at a decent club and Arsenal were happy with that,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports.
‘He hasn’t done badly at Arsenal. He’s done really well and better than a lot of people thought he would.
‘I think Arsenal will be looking at it and thinking they could get a few quid for him. It could be something that happens in January.
‘You never have two goalkeepers at the same level at a club, especially top ‘keepers.
‘Normally when that happens, it is because they are both not good enough and you can’t decide who you should be picking.
‘I really admire Arteta for doing it. It’s ruthless, I get that. But to be honest, I don’t see Ramsdale getting back into the team.
‘Raya is the No.1 and Ramsdale will have to move on. If he can get out in January and Arsenal can get a good fee, it could happen.’
Carragher also suggested that Ramsdale was being fake after his reaction to Raya’s key save during Sunday’s north London derby went viral.
‘You know when someone loses the Oscar and they’re clapping and smiling for the other person?’ Carragher added. ‘I was laughing when I saw that. He’ll be absolutely devastated.’
