Kobbie Mainoo already better than Casemiro, reckons Manchester United cult hero Lee Sharpe

Everton FC v Manchester United - Premier League

Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo is already better than his teammates Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat, reckons former Red Devils midfielder Lee Sharpe.

The 18-year-old has made a grand total of five first team appearances for Manchester United, but he is already earning rave reviews.

He made his first competitive start for the club in the 3-0 win over Everton in the Premier League at the weekend and turned in an impressively assured display, which led to his Champions League debut at Galatasaray on Wednesday night.

Erik ten Hag’s midfield has been one of a number of problems for the Dutchman and Sharpe reckons Mainoo could be the answer, already superior to his far more experienced teammates Casemiro and Amrabat.

‘He looks like a natural in the team,’ Sharpe told 888Sport. ‘He slots in and doesn’t panic in situations – there were a couple of players around him last night, but he kept the ball and displayed some nice touches, he just never gets flustered.

‘He always looks composed and knows what’s around him – he comes across as an experienced first-teamer, but he’s only been in the team for two minutes. I’ve got high expectations for him – hopefully the manager and the club can protect him and play him at the right times.

‘When you’re bringing off your new signing, Sofyan Amrabat, to replace him with a young lad [against Galatasaray], it says a lot about his ability. You’ve also got Casemiro not playing at the moment, and I think Mainoo can keep each of them out of the team – I reckon he’s better than both of them.’

Sharpe, who won three Premier League titles with Manchester United, also has very high hopes for another teenager at the club, Alejandro Garnacho.

Mainoo shone in the win at Everton but it was Garnacho who stole the headlines with his stunning overhead kick and he certainly caught Sharpe’s attention.

‘Garnacho’s goal and recent performances are a huge positive moving forward. I think we’ve all seen his potential and what he’s capable of doing,’ said the 52-year-old England international.

‘The goal against Everton was an absolute worldie and probably Goal of the Season in a lot of people’s books. He’s clearly got a lot of ability – there were perhaps a few question marks over his mentality and attitude, but he’s got plenty of experienced players around him who can help him with that and guide him down the right path.

Everton FC v Manchester United - Premier League

‘He’s an incredible talent and one of those players who you pay your money to see. He takes people on and is more of an old-fashioned winger – he’s very direct and can score goals, so hopefully he can maintain those performance levels.

‘I think he’s going to be a sensation for Manchester United for the next 10 or 15 years to come.’

Granit Xhaka trolls former Arsenal team-mate Oleksandr Zinchenko

Granit Xhaka left a cheeky comment on Oleksandr Zinchenko's Instagram post (Picture: Getty)
Granit Xhaka left a cheeky comment on Oleksandr Zinchenko’s Instagram post (Picture: Getty)

Granit Xhaka trolled his former Arsenal team-mate Oleksandr Zinchenko following the Gunners’ 6-0 win over RC Lens in the Champions League.

Zinchenko started the match but was replaced after 45 minutes, with Xhaka appearing to poke fun at either his lack of game time or performance.

The Ukraine international also only featured for 45 minutes in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Sevilla on November 8.

Xhaka, who left Arsenal in the summer to join Bayer Leverkusen, knows Zinchenko from their time together at the Emirates last season and replied to the left-back’s Instagram post with a cheeky comment after the victory over RC Lens.

Zinchenko posted a photo of himself with the caption: ‘Let’s go for more [fire emoji] @Arsenal.’

Xhaka left a comment, which attracted over 1,500 likes, which said: ‘Did you play? [Laughing emoji].’

Arsenal fans appeared to love the interaction with one supporter telling Xhaka ‘we need you back’ and other commenting ‘we miss you a lot’.

Xhaka spent seven years at Arsenal, making a total of 297 appearances and helping the north Londoners win two FA Cups.

Zinchenko, meanwhile, joined the Gunners in the summer of 2022 from Manchester City and has played 51 games for Arsenal to date.

Both Xhaka and Zinchenko played key roles for Arsenal last season amid their Premier League title challenge, as they eventually missed out to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Paul Scholes says ‘clinical’ Anthony Martial should be starting ahead of Antony for Manchester United

Manchester United v Luton Town - Premier League
Antony is yet to score or assist this season (Photo: Getty)

Paul Scholes says he would like to see Anthony Martial starting more for Manchester United in the place of Antony.

His comments came ahead of United’s crucial Champions League match at Galatasaray on Wednesday evening.

Erik ten Hag made four changes to his side from the one that beat Everton 3-0 last Sunday, with Antony coming in to replace the suspended Marcus Rashford.

Despite scoring and assisting at Goodison Park, Martial was dropped to the bench in favour of Rasmus Hojlund who has recovered from injury.

They’re not changes that United legend Scholes agrees with however, believing that the French forward is better suited to how the Red Devils play than the Brazil winger.

‘I would have liked to have seen Martial play,’ the former England midfielder told TNT Sports.

‘He’s clinical, United have to play on the counter-attack. With the type of team they’ve got they can’t control games, so they have to rely on their forward players.

Galatasaray A.S. v Manchester United: Group A - UEFA Champions League 2023/24
Anthony Martial was benched for Man Utd vs Galatasaray (Photo: Getty)

‘Antony has not been great, he’s not played a lot, I’m not sure where he’ll be at fitness-wise. We just had the international break where he won’t have played either.

‘I would have liked to have seen Martial come into that front three alongside [Alejandro] Garnacho and Hojlund.’

It should be noted that neither forward is having a particularly good season, though Martial has at least scored two and assisted two in 480 minutes of game time so far, compared to Antony who is yet to provide a single contribution in 650 minutes of action.

Explaining the decision to bring Hojlund in for Martial, Ten Hag said: ‘We are happy Anthony Martial is fit over a long period. We want to keep him fit, he will contribute this season.

‘Rasmus’ speed is a huge weapon. We want to use that.’

Arsenal considering sale of midfielder Thomas Partey to fund January signings

Thomas Partey may be heading for an Arsenal exit in January, with the club looking to fund transfers and refresh their options in central midfield.

The Ghanaian joined Arsenal in 2020 in a move from Atletico Madrid but has been plagued with injuries this season.

The 30-year-old has only started three Premier League games this season, featuring for the club most recently in their 1-0 win over Manchester City in October.

He has since undergone surgery to rectify a thigh issue, ruling him out until 2024, and potentially meaning he could have played his last game for the club, with reports suggesting Partey could be sold in the new year to raise funds for January incomings.

According to ESPN, the club are open to the possibility, with the central midfielder attracting interest from Juventus and Saudi Arabia.

Any funds raised by the sale of Partey could be used to try and prise top target Douglas Luiz away from Aston Villa.

The Brazilian midfielder is highly rated by Arsenal, who saw three bids rejected for him in September last year.

Villa boss Unai Emery has insisted the 25-year-old is not for sale, but Arsenal may test the club’s resolve should funds be made available.

Another midfielder with an uncertain future at the Emirates is Jorginho, whose contract expires in the summer.

The club do have an option to extend the deal, however, and Arteta has spoken in glowing terms about the Italian recently.

‘’I’m really happy with Jorgi, I think we all are. He contributes to make the team better, let’s see,’ the Spaniard said before their game against Brentford last weekend.

The Gunners are also reportedly said to be interested in Brentford striker Ivan Toney as well as Wolves forward Pedro Neto.

Ange Postecoglou gives injury update on Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur ahead of Manchester City clash

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa - Premier League
Rodrigo Bentancur was forced off with an ankle injury after just 32 minutes (Photo: Getty)

Ange Postecoglou has been left sweating on the fitness of Rodrigo Bentancur after he came off with an ankle injury during Tottenham’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Villa came from behind to inflict a third straight defeat on Spurs in North London on Sunday, with Pau Torres and Ollie Watkins bagging the goals after Giovani Lo Celso had opened the scoring.

The result leaves Spurs fifth in the table, four points off leaders Manchester City with a trip to the Etihad next Sunday next on the agenda.

And they’ll go into the big clash amidst a huge injury crisis that only worsened during the Villa loss, with Bentancur forced off after 32 minutes following a bad tackle from Matty Cash, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg taking his place.

It was the midfielder’s first start for his club since February having only just recovered from an ACL injury, and Postecoglou didn’t sound confident that the Uruguayan would be making a speedy recovery.

‘It is his ankle I think. It wasn’t a great tackle,’ the manager said in his post-match press conference.

‘I thought he started the game so well and I think it was the reason we got a real good foothold on the game. He’s such a creative player.

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea FC - Premier League
James Maddison is among the Tottenham stars out injured (Photo: Getty)

‘It’s the last thing we needed, another injury. So disappointed to lose him but we’re yet to see the extent of it.’

The Spurs treatment room is nearly at breaking point, with James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison among the players currently on the sidelines.

This led to Postecoglou only naming eight subs – two of whom were goalkeepers – with the manager stating that that was ‘a pretty good summation’ of their injury crisis.

He added: ‘We have got eight [injuries], Bentancur nine, we had a couple of suspensions today and we’ve only got a squad of 25. You do the sums and that’s what we’ve got.

‘We lost Ashley Phillips during the week as well. It is just the situation we’re in at the moment, but we’ll get through it.

‘It might take a little while, but we’ll get through it and as long as we show the same intent and play the football we did today, I’ve got no doubt when we come out the other side, we’ll be a very good football team.’

Manchester City icon Richard Dunne explains why Arsenal won’t win the Premier League title this season

Arsenal FC v Burnley FC - Premier League
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are one point behind Man City in the table (Photo: Getty)

Richard Dunne doesn’t believe Arsenal will win the Premier League this season and says that Liverpool are still Manchester City’s biggest challengers.

12 games into the campaign and it appears we’re in for a cracking title race with just three points separating the top five teams.

City lead the way on 28, ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal on 27, Tottenham on 26 and Aston Villa on 25.

And it could all change after this weekend, with City hosting Liverpool on Saturday before Arsenal travel to Brentford, while Spurs take on Villa in North London on Sunday.

Many believe the Citizens will triumph again but there is debate over who will run them the closest, with many tipping either the Gunners or the Reds to do so.

Former City captain Dunne believes it will be Jurgen Klopp’s men, rationalising that there are too many question marks surrounding Mikel Arteta’s team.

‘City and Liverpool will be up there,’ Dunne told Betway when asked about the title race and who his former side’s biggest challengers would be.

Liverpool FC v Manchester City - Premier League
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool travel to Pep Guardiola’s Man City on Saturday (Photo: Getty)

‘I’m still not sure about Arsenal and if they can compete in all the different competitions. Is their squad big enough?

‘People have already spoken about their lack of a centre forward. They’ve created their own problems in the goalkeeping department, which now seems to be a big issue.

Tottenham have shown they’re just not strong enough with a few injuries. I’m more inclined to go with Liverpool.’

Arsenal are looking to strengthen in the January window, with Villa’s Douglas Luiz a name on their radar, and Dunne expects the defensive midfielder – who was previously on the books of City – to make a move in the near-future.

‘Luiz will have Champions League ambition. He will know soon enough if he can do that at Villa,’ he added.

‘There are certain clubs that need that position covering, so I expect he will be sought after in the January transfer window – if not, the summer.’

Liverpool handed major boost ahead of Manchester City clash as four stars return to training

Jurgen Klopp

Joe Gomez, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones and Ibrahima Konate have all returned to training ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City this weekend.

The quartet all missed the victory over Brentford before the international break. Gomez missed out through an unexplained issue with summer signing Gravenberch absent due to a knee problem.

Jones sat out of the Europa League defeat to Toulouse and the win over the Bees with a thigh injury with Konate dealing with a hamstring issue that forced him to withdraw from the France squad during the international break.

All four were back in training on Thursday, joined by the South American contingent of Alisson Becker, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Alexis Mac Allister after returning to Merseyside this week.

Liverpool sit just a point behind City heading into Saturday afternoon’s clash at the Etihad after the champions were held to a 4-4 draw away to Chelsea last time out.

Jurgen Klopp remains without Andy Robertson who suffered a shoulder injury playing for Scotland against Spain during October’s international break.

The 29-year-old underwent surgery and has missed Liverpool’s last seven games.

In his absence, Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas have been deputising at left-back with Robertson unable to provide a clear timeframe for when he will be back to full fitness and ready to return to the starting XI.

‘I’ve not looked that far ahead yet,’ Robertson said this week. I’m just trying to take it week by week, I’m trying not to get frustrated.

‘I’m not the best injured so I’m trying to take small wins every single week.

‘I don’t want to put a game in mind and then I don’t make it or I come back before then.

‘I am just taking it slowly but surely and then there will be a time to start pushing it and when that comes I’ll try and get on the pitch as quickly as I can.’

Roy Keane among favourites for Republic of Ireland job with Stephen Kenny’s exit confirmed

Roy Keane
Former Man Utd and Ireland captain Roy Keane won 67 caps for his country (Photo: Getty)

Manchester United legend Roy Keane is one of the favourites to become the Republic of Ireland’s next manager after Stephen Kenny’s exit was confirmed.

On Wednesday night, the Football Association of Ireland announced that Kenny’s contract would not be renewed following the country’s failure to qualify for Euro 2024.

A statement read: ‘Having reviewed the Euro 2024 qualification campaign in its entirety, and recognising how difficult the Group was, the results needed to realise our goal of qualification for the Tournament were not achieved.

‘The Board agrees that now is the right time for change ahead of the friendly matches in March and June 2024 and the next Nations League campaign starting in September 2024.’

FAI CEO Jonathan Hill added: ‘Over the period of his tenure, Stephen and his staff have worked tirelessly to create the right environment to support the development of our senior men’s team, and we are hugely grateful for that considerable contribution.

‘Stephen has also overseen an important period of transition for our senior men’s national team and has given debuts to a significant number of new and younger players and this will serve as a solid platform for whoever now takes this group of players forward.’

Former Celtic boss and Northern Ireland international Neil Lennon is currently the bookies favourite for the job having been out of work since getting sacked by Cypriot side Omonia just over a year ago.

Republic of Ireland Training Session and Press Conference
Stephen Kenny won just 11 of his 40 games in charge of Ireland (Photo: Getty)

But Ireland legend Keane is also considered a frontrunner having expressed a desire to return to management one day, albeit under the right circumstances.

The former United and Ireland captain has previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich and served as assistant manager for his country under Martin O’Neill, but has not held a top job since 2011 or been in the dugout at all since 2019.

Others in the running include England U21 boss Lee Carsley, former Birmingham and Hull boss Steve Bruce, one time England manager Sam Allardyce and Greece boss Gus Poyet.

Next Permanent Republic of Ireland Manager Odds:

Neil Lennon – 9/4

Roy Keane – 4/1

Lee Carsley – 5/1

Steve Bruce – 11/2

Sam Allardyce – 9/1

Gus Poyet – 12/1

Robbie Keane – 20/1

Chris Hughton – 20/1

Anthony Barry – 20/1

Odds courtesy of Betfair

Kenny took charge of Ireland in April 2020 but would win just 11 of his 40 games in charge, failing to get them to Euro 2020 and 2024 as well as the 2022 World Cup.

Though qualification for next summer’s tournament was always going to be tough as they were in a group with France and the Netherlands, performances and results were poor, losing six of eight games with their only wins coming against minnows Gibraltar.

The FAI must pick Kenny’s successor carefully as not only will they have to deal with qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in North America, but more importantly Ireland is set to co-host Euro 2028 with the UK.

Due to the unusual nature of five co-hosts, automatic qualification for the home nations is not guaranteed, meaning Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland could miss out on their own tournament.

‘The Last Dance’ – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to meet again in Inter Miami vs Al Nassr friendly in Saudi Arabia

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
Messi and Ronaldo will write another chapter next year (Picture: Getty)

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will come face-to-face once again when Inter Miami and Al Nassr meet in a friendly in Saudi Arabia in February.

The legends of modern football shared countless battles playing for Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain and could face each other for the final time next year in a match dubbed ‘The Last Dance’.

Messi, 36, left Paris Saint-Germain to join the MLS side in July on a two-and-a-half year deal.

Ronaldo, 38, meanwhile is coming up to one year in the Saudi Pro League having signed for Al Nassr last January after his acrimonious departure from Manchester United.

The friendly is set to take place at King Fahd Stadium, part of Riyadh Season in Saudi which already includes some of the biggest boxing shows in recent history.

Inter Miami vs Al-Nassr will take place the same month as the historic heavyweight title fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk which was confirmed last week.

A statement from Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, said: ‘We look forward to welcoming everyone from Inter Miami in February for the Riyadh Season Cup, which will bring together a number of the biggest international stars from across all three clubs competing.

‘The excitement and global interest that we expect this tournament to generate expands upon one of our main aspirations for Riyadh Season – to create international events that visitors to Riyadh and fans around the world can all enjoy.’

Between 2008 and 2017, Messi and Ronaldo won every Ballon d’Or award as they dominated world football.

The rivals last played against each other in January this year when Messi was still a PSG player.

In what was Messi’s first game back after winning the World Cup with Argentina and Ronaldo’s first after signing for Al-Nassr, both scored in a 5-4 win for the French giants.

Ronaldo has scored 16 times in 17 appearances for his side this season.

After arriving in the US in the summer, Messi hit 11 in 14 appearances playing for Inter.

Benfica have no intention of selling Man Utd target Joao Neves in January with huge release clause revealed

Joao Neves
Neves has been scouted heavily by United (Picture: Getty)

Benfica starlet Joao Neves has a release clause of €120million (£105m) with no plans for his club to cash in on the midfielder in January amid interest from Manchester United.

United have deployed scouts to watch over the 19-year-old midfielder this season, watching on as he scored a late equaliser in the Lisbon derby against Sporting Lisbon prior to the international break.

The Portugal international has helped filled the void left by Enzo Fernandez’s move to Chelsea last January, forcing his way into the starting XI following the Argentine’s £105m move to Stamford Bridge and serving as a key player in midfield this season.

Neves is highly regarded at Benfica and has an identical release clause on his contract.

While United are carefully monitoring his progress, Fabrizio Romano reports the Portuguese giants will not consider a January exit and have no intention of opening talks with any interested sides.

Neves has been playing alongside Bruno Fernandes during the international break with the United captain admitting he would love to see his compatriot join him in Manchester.

‘It has to be the Man United coach who says whether he has a place or not,’ Fernandes said.

SL Benfica v Casa Pia AC - Liga Portugal Betclic
Neves has replaced Enzo Fernandez at Benfica (Picture: Getty)

‘He’s [Neves] a great player, I don’t know if he would have a place or not. It depends on the coach and his ideas.

‘But he’s an excellent player and an excellent kid, very professional, he will have a bright future wherever he goes.

‘I would love to have him by my side. Because he has quality and will have a bright future. It depends on him. What I want most is the best for him’.

United have struggled in midfield despite the additions of Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat in the summer transfer window.

The former Chelsea star has started just one of United’s last seven games with Amrabat an unused sub in their last two Premier League games.

Ten Hag has settled on the pairing of Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen in recent weeks but a knee injury suffered by the Dane against Luton will force the manager to shuffle his pack again.

Bayern Munich considering move for Man Utd star Raphael Varane after being told January exit is ‘possible’

Raphael Varane
Varane has been left out of the side in recent weeks (Picture: Getty)

Bayern Munich are weighing up a January move for Manchester United defender Raphael Varane who is reportedly unhappy with his situation at Old Trafford.

Varane has lost his place in the starting XI in recent weeks with Erik ten Hag opting for a partnership of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans with Lisandro Martinez currently sidelined.

Even with Evans ruled out in the win over Luton Town ahead of the international break, Victor Lindelof was preferred at the heart of defence with the United boss reluctant to play Maguire and Varane together.

According to Sky Sport Germany, Bayern are now monitoring the situation with discussions taking place over a move for the 30-year-old. The former Real Madrid star could be available for a fee between €20million and €30million with the report adding Bayern have been informed that a winter move is possible.

Varane’s salary could be a stumbling block, however, with the centre-half thought to be among United’s highest earners on £350,000-a-week.

Varane joined United from Real in 2021 with the Frenchman forming a solid partnership with Martinez last season.

He has started just one of his side’s last eight games, however. Ten Hag has insisted there has been no falling out between him and the World Cup winner, with tactical reasons and Maguire’s return to form causing him to lose his regular place in the side.

Absolutely not,’ Ten Hag said earlier this month when asked if there was a wider issue between him and Varane. ‘As I said, it is about tactical reasons why I chose these partnerships. I think Harry and Jonny did well.

‘What I said last year, Harry didn’t play a lot, so I was very happy with Rapha’s performances. I have always been happy with his performance. But in this moment, Harry is playing very well and there is internal competition.’

He continued: ‘There are moments in certain games where they (Maguire and Varane) can play together and they have already proven they can do it.

‘But the build-up is not that fluid when one of them is playing from the left centre-back position.

‘Because I think Licha, obviously, Luke Shaw, obviously, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are right-footed, but they can play really comfortably with their left and make the right angles.

‘Then you can construct a better formation where you can start to play.’

Gareth Southgate has confirmed Jarrod Bowen has been forced to pull out of the England squad ahead of tomorrow’s European Championship qualifier against North Macedonia.

The West Ham winger has been in superb goalscoring form this season and had been hoping to cement his place in Southgate’s plans ahead of Euro 2024 next summer.

Bowen was an unused substitute in Friday’s win over Malta at Wembley and will not feature in Skopje after sustaining a kneeinjury in training.

‘Unfortunately Jarrod picked up an injury, I think he felt it a little bit yesterday and again at the end of training today,’ confirmed Southgate at his pre-match press conference.

‘We didn’t really have enough time to assess it fully and make a really accurate decision before the game so we felt better to leave him in England so that he can get it properly assessed.

‘I don’t think it’s going to be anything serious but we just didn’t have enough time and we wouldn’t take a risk in that situation.”

Bowen’s departure follows that of defender Trippier, who left the England camp earlier on Sunday due to a personal matter.

England end their Euro 2024 qualification campaign and 2023 fixture calendar in Skopje on Monday night, when they will be unable to call upon Newcastle full-back Trippier.

The England account on X, formerly known as Twitter, said: ‘@trippier2 has departed the £ThreeLions camp, owing to a personal matter and will not travel to North Macedonia.’

Southgate’s side secured progress to next summer’s finals with two games to spare and Friday’s forgettable 2-0 win against Malta all but assured their spot among the top seeds in the December 2 draw.
