Arsenal hero Charlie Nicholas has told Unai Emery the four players who must start against Wolves on Saturday.
The Gunners, who suffered a Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday, return to league action this weekend with a home match against Wolves.
Unai Emery’s side have won just one of their last four Premier League fixtures to slip outside of the top-four and Nicholas has urged the struggling manager to take the attack to Wolves.
The Gunners hero believes Arsenal forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, club-record signing Nicolas Pepe and Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos should all start on Saturday.
He told Sky Sports: ‘Will Granit Xhaka start, or will he leave the building before the final whistle? He is done in my opinion.
‘The anger that has come out from the Arsenal fans has been there for a long time. They are not asking for Unai Emery’s head, but when is he going to get the balance of the team right?
‘He cannot solve the major defensive issues, as that is the reality staring everyone in the face.
‘I am a massive fan of playing Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe, with Dani Ceballos just behind, so they should see Wolves off.
‘These players must start to take the tension off the defenders and produce. I think they will do, while Wolves are still unpredictable in what they want to do and where they are.
‘Wolves should have won this game last year when they came to the Emirates. If Wolves have a go, they could win this game easily.
‘The crowd are going to be on Arsenal’s case, but they will get over the line in this one.’
While Arsenal are currently fifth in the Premier League, Wolves have slipped into the bottom-half of the table after drawing their last two games.
Jurgen Klopp told his Liverpool players he expected fireworks from their Carabao Cup clash with Premier League rivals Arsenal.
Klopp’s side beat Arsenal on penalties in a thrilling contest at Anfield on Wednesday evening to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was the hero, keeping out Dani Ceballos’ penalty to clinch a 5-4 shootout win after the match finished 5-5 after 90 minutes.
Asked whether he enjoyed the remarkable cup tie, Klopp told Liverpool’s official website: ‘One hundred per cent, from the first to the last second.
‘I’m not sure when I had last time so much fun in a football game, to be honest – I saw 19 goals!
‘Actually before the game I said to Rhian [Brewster]: “I would buy a ticket for this game – thank God I don’t have to, but I would!” because I was really excited about the opportunity we can give to the boys and I was happy with the game.
‘Yes, we made mistakes and I saw now that we had 60-something per cent possession. The more possession you have and the lesser tuned you are, then the more often you lose the ball, but we were too open in the moments when we lost the ball, we were not prepared for the moments.
‘So these were the three or four moments in the game which were not good because we lost balls in strange moments.
‘All the rest was really, really good. How we created, how we passed, how we ran; there was so many good things tonight that I saw.’
Klopp made 11 changes to the Liverpool side that beat Tottenham in the Premier League last weekend and said he was ‘so pleased’ for the young guns who helped knock Arsenal out.
He added: ‘The kids showing up like crazy and I’m so pleased for them that they have a first Anfield experience like that!
‘With all the emotions when you saw the faces, the face of Caoimhin Kelleher when he saved the penalty, of Curtis Jones when he scored the penalty.
‘How everybody ran to Neco Williams when he crossed the ball to Div, all these things are just so nice. It’s so nice.
‘When I saw in front of me the fighting spirit of Rhian Brewster, when he won the ball like four times back, and we go out there and the next moment we score a goal.
‘These are so important moments for these kids, of course, but for all the other LFC kids as well.’
MORE: Granit Xhaka finally breaks silence after telling Arsenal fans to ‘f**k off’ in shocking outburst
Dimitar Berbatov says Arsenal fans were ‘wrong’ to boo Granit Xhaka but has slammed his shocking outburst during the draw with Crystal Palace last weekend.
Xhaka has been widely condemned after he antagonised Arsenal fans and told them to ‘f**k off’ as he left the field at the Emirates on Sunday.
The Arsenal captain reacted badly after his substitution during the 2-2 draw with met by cheers and now faces a fight to keep hold of the captain’s armband.
Manchester United hero Berbatov described the incident as ‘painful’ but says blame can be attached to both parties.
‘Arsenal fans were wrong to boo their captain Granit Xhaka against Crystal Palace last weekend but the player’s reaction was unacceptable,’ he told Betfair.
‘It’s not the first time Arsenal fans have booed their own players as I remember it happening to Emmanuel Eboue. It’s not pleasant at all and I found it painful to watch the Xhaka incident.
‘For a player, it dents your pride if fans boo your contribution or cheer that you’re going off.
‘You want to defend yourself but no player – especially the club captain – should ever react like Xhaka.
‘When he took off his shirt, I was thinking: “Please don’t throw your shirt down, because if you do that you’re finished at the club.”
‘I was playing for Tottenham in 2007 when Hossam Ghaly threw his shirt to the ground after being substituted. It is terrible for a team when that happens.
‘Fortunately, Xhaka stopped short of doing that, but it will still be difficult for him to come back from this unpleasant incident.
‘Unai Emery has a challenging job if he’s to mend the relationship between Xhaka and the Arsenal fans.’
Xhaka missed Arsenal’s dramatic Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night but could return for the Gunners on Saturday when they host Wolves.
While a number of Arsenal legends have slammed Xhaka, Paul Merson defended the Swiss star by saying: ‘Xhaka’s behaviour was shocking but at the same time, he’s hurt.
‘It’s not nice and no one wants to get booed off the pitch, I don’t care who you are. I’m one of his biggest critics but he does care.’

Manchester United legend Wes Brown believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should attempt to sign James Maddison and Jack Grealish in January.
Solskjaer wants Ed Woodward to bolster his Manchester United squad with at least four new signings over the next two transfer windows, despite spending £150m last summer.
New additions Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James have all impressed for the Red Devils but Solskjaer’s side have still endured a poor start to the new season.
United held Premier League leaders Liverpool to a draw earlier in the month and beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday but are seventh in the table ahead of this weekend’s action.
Red Devils hero Brown expects United to be busy during the January transfer window and says his former club should look to sign Premier League stars Maddison and Grealish.
‘I think Ole will try and buy in January,’ the five-time Premier League winner told 888sport. ‘United need another striker and an attacking midfielder, that little wizard number 10.
‘The defence is fine. The goalkeepers are fine. The ideal thing would be two strikers and two midfielders. If only it was that easy!
‘Jack Grealish in the last few games has come on immensely. He can always see the pass. James Maddison has always been good and he’s a threat getting into the box.
‘These are two young English players who would definitely help the squad.’
Asked whether Manchester United may struggle to land top targets due to their domestic and European form, Brown said: ‘I still think United is a draw for players.
‘We’re still buying big players, and a lot of good English players with Harry and Wan-Bissaka coming in.
‘Ben Chilwell is an excellent player and Leicester are on a brilliant run and you can see the whole team has been lifted.
‘But if Manchester United went in for Chilwell I’m sure he would definitely come, 100%.’
On the gap between United and arch-rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, Brown added: ‘We are behind and everyone knows that.
‘It could take two or three years, you never know, to catch up. But Ole has only been there for ten months and I think people are getting now what he’s trying to do.’
One of Chelsea’s young guns has revealed how Frank Lampard attempted to turn the tide during the Carabao Cup clash against Manchester United.
England striker Marcus Rashford gave United the lead at Stamford Bridge with a 25th-minute penalty but Chelsea improved after half-time and levelled through Michy Batshuayi.
The home side were unable to maintain their momentum, however, and Rashford’s sensational free-kick settled the affair and sent Manchester United through to the quarter-finals.
Marc Guehi was one of a number of youngsters included in Lampard’s team, with the teenage defender making just his second senior Chelsea appearance on Wednesday night.
And the 19-year-old has revealed what Lampard told his inexperienced side at half-time with Chelsea trailing in the match.
‘The defeat is a tough one to take after such a good run of form,’ Guehi said. ‘But the most important thing is to bounce back and recover and go again in the Premier League.
‘We played well in spells of the game. At half-time the manager said to carry on what we were doing, keep moving the ball fast, but with a bit more intensity and a bit more zeal to our game.
‘That is what we tried to do and we came out fast and we came out strong. Michy scored a fantastic goal for us but unfortunately we came away with a loss.’
On Rashford’s stunning winner, Guehi added: ‘It was a fantastic free-kick, I have seen it back, and there is nothing we can really do and so it is credit to them.’
The highly-rated defender also discussed his ambitions for the rest of the season with Lampard prone to calling upon his youngsters due to the club’s transfer ban.
‘It is a great opportunity,’ Guehi said. ‘The manager has been giving young players a chance and it really gives an incentive to us to go out there and try to prove a point.
‘Hopefully I can keep getting opportunities and keep showing everyone what I can do.’
Frank Lampard was pleased with the performances of teenage duo Marc Guehi and Billy Gilmour despite Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup round of 16.
Chelsea’s seven game-winning run came to an end at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday as a Marcus Rashford double cancelled out Michy Batshuayi’s strike to send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Lampard took the opportunity to rotate his squad for the match, making six changes in total with Guehi replacing fellow academy graduate Fikayo Tomori in central defence and Gilmour coming into midfield in place of Mateo Kovacic.
Although Lampard was disappointed to see his team exit the competition, he took encouragement from the performances of Guehi, 19, and Gilmour, 18, saying that both proved themselves capable of playing at the top-level.
‘I thought Billy and Marc Guehi were both really good, Marc was as comfortable as anything,’ Lampard told BBC Radio 5 Live after the match.
‘I’ve come away from tonight – obviously, we don’t want to lose and we know where this is in the competition – but at the same time, there’s lots of positives.
‘In the bigger picture, Marc Guehi’s performance showed that he’s more than comfortable at this level and Billy the same, he was bright.
‘It was a tough first half for him because he was trying to get free, trying to be positive and it wasn’t quite happening for him in a way, but I’m really pleased to see them both play so well.’
Both Guehi and Gilmour were handed their full first-team debuts for Chelsea during the 7-1 thrashing of Grimsby Town earlier on in the competition, while the latter has also featured against Sheffield United in the Premier League.
Guehi is yet to feature for the Blues in a top-flight match but he admitted that the team will look to bounce back from their setback against United when they face Watford at Vicarage Road in the Premier League on Saturday.
‘The defeat is a tough one to take after such a good run of form, but the most important thing is to bounce back and recover and go again in the Premier League,’ Guehi said.
‘We played well in spells of the game. At half-time, the manager said to carry on what we were doing, keep moving the ball fast, but with a bit more intensity and a bit more zeal to our game.
‘That is what we tried to do and we came out fast and we came out strong. Michy scored a fantastic goal for us but unfortunately, we came away with a loss.’
Shkodran Mustafi admitted he let Arsenal down with his mistake that gave Liverpool the lead in the Carabao Cup clash at Anfield.
The thrilling game ended 5-5, with Liverpool winning on penalties, but Arsenal were behind after just six minutes when Mustafi turned a cross into his own net.
Mustafi has faced relentless criticism for his performances at Arsenal in the past year and the centre-back even hit out at fans for making him a scapegoat.
The German spoke out on his error against Liverpool, saying Arsenal were unlucky to lose the ten-goal thriller.
He said: ‘It’s been a hard battle at Anfield and it did not help that I let the team down to start with, but we fought back. Unlucky in the end to lose on penalties.’
Arsenal twice led by a two-goal margin at Liverpool, with Divock Origi popping up with a 94th-minute equaliser to force penalties.
Dani Ceballos then missed a penalty for Arsenal, handing Liverpool victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.
Unai Emery praised a ‘crazy’ game, but admitted his side were gutted to come out on the wrong end of the result.
‘We played in a positive way and we came back after the start with a good performance and with good patience.
‘We took confidence from the first and second half.
‘When they drew level we again took the lead. It was a great goal and a nice moment an exciting moment for us and our supporters.
‘They were here and the last goal was a bad moment for us because it was in injury time and the penalties are 50/50.
‘We lost in that moment but I think we did very good things tonight and also think we can take some players’ confidence which is good for them and we are going to continue.
‘Now the most important thing is we had good intentions in this competition but we lost and we now focus on Saturday.’
