Chelsea agree £34m Jorrel Hato transfer but Ajax include clause

Jorrel Hato is heading to Chelsea (Soccrates/Getty)

Chelsea have agreed a €40 million (£34.5m) deal to sign Ajax centre-back Jorrel Hato, according to reports.

Negotiations between the two clubs were accelerated last week when Chelsea made an official approach to Ajax for the highly rated 19-year-old.

The Athletic report that Chelsea and Ajax have now agreed a transfer fee for the Netherlands international, who will now undergo a medical.

The report adds that Ajax have also managed to secure a sell-on clause as part of their agreement with Chelsea.

Hato will become Chelsea’s fourth summer signing after Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens, while Estevao Willian, Kendry Paez, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr have also joined Stamford Bridge this summer.

Former Barcelona midfielder in hospital after dog bite to his genitals

Carles Perez required six stitches after the dog attack (Quality Sport Images/Getty)

Former Barcelona midfielder Carles Perez has been hospitalised in Greece after being bitten on the genitals by a dog.

The incident took place in Thermi, a suburb on the southern outskirts of Thessaloniki, while Perez was walking his dog on Tuesday morning.

During the walk, Perez’s dog was attacked by another dog and while trying to separate the two animals, the 27-year-old was bitten on the genitals.

The Spanish midfielder was taken to a private hospital in Panorama, another suburb outside Thessaloniki, after suffering a ‘deep gash’ to his genitals, which required six stitches.

Aris confirmed on Wednesday that Perez has suffered a ‘soft tissue infection’ from the dog bite.

Perez has now been ruled out of Aris’ UEFA Conference League qualifier at home to Azerbaijani side Araz-Nakhchivan on Thursday.

Carles Perez joined Greek side Aris on loan earlier this month (Getty)

Speaking on Wednesday, Aris manager Marinos Ouzounidis confirmed that Perez was due to start against Araz-Nakhchivan.

‘Carles would have been in the starting line-up,’ Ouzounidis said at a press conference.

‘This incident happened but we can’t dwell on it any longer. My mind is working on alternative solutions and we have worked on them.

‘That’s why I insist that it’s important to have players with personality. So I’m interested in the group of players that I will have at my disposal, to give the most they can.’

Perez, who made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2019, has also played for Roma, Celta and Getafe.

He joined Greek Super League side Aris on a season-long loan from Celta earlier this month.

Chelsea preparing opening transfer bid to beat Arsenal to £60m star

RB Leipzig v VfB Stuttgart - Bundesliga
Xavi Simons is attracting interest from both Chelsea and Arsenal (Picture: Getty)

Chelsea are lining up an opening transfer offer to sign RB Leipzig and Netherlands star Xavi Simons, according to reports.

The Blues have already bolstered Enzo Maresca’s attack with the addition of Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap for a combined fee of around £160million this summer.

Young duo Estevao and Kendry Paez, both aged 18, could also be set for key roles in the first-team next season having touched down in west London with burgeoning reputations in South American football.

But Stamford Bridge bosses are determined to further strengthen by bringing in Ajax defender Jorrel Hato and RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Simons before the transfer deadline.

It’s understood personal terms have been agreed with Hato’s camp and a total agreement is edging ever closer for the 19-year-old Netherlands international.

Talks for Hato’s Dutch team-mate Simons are also progressing at a pace and Chelsea are preparing an official bid for the 22-year-old having received some encouraging signs from RB Leipzig.

According to talkSPORT, the latest round of ‘positive’ discussions have ‘accelerated’ over the last few days.

RB Leipzig have set an asking price of £60.7m for Simons (Picture: Getty)
RB Leipzig v VfB Stuttgart - 1. Bundesliga
The Dutchman is open to a move to the Premier League (Picture: Getty)

It’s claimed agent Ali Barat has been at the heart of negotiations for Simons this summer, with RB Leipzig keen to include a sell-on clause in any agreement for the former PSG and PSV Eindhoven man.

The report adds that the Bundesliga outfit would be prepared to sanction the sale of Simons should they receive an offer in the region of €70m (£60.7m) from Chelsea.

However, the Blues are hopeful they could drive down RB Leipzig’s asking price and shake hands on a lower fee for Simons.

Chelsea’s hierarchy want to avoid a repeat of last season – when Maresca’s attacking options were left desperately thin on the ground after a string of injuries to key players – and Simons’ versatility is considered a big plus.

Arsenal have also been considering a move for Simons, but their interest remains just that at his stage and no concrete talks have taken place, with Eberechi Eze currently the Gunners’ priority.

Simons, who is believed to be open to the prospect of a Premier League move, has two years remaining on his current contract with RB Leipzig.

Williamson proud of 'relentless' England

Why Beth Mead was allowed to take penalty twice in England’s Women’s Euro 2025 triumph over Spain

England v Spain - UEFA Women's EURO 2025 Final
Beth Mead slipped and touched the ball twice with her first penalty for England (Picture: Getty)

There was yet more high drama and controversy as England overcame world champions Spain on penalties to successfully defend their European Championship title in Switzerland.

For the third match in succession, the Lionesses were forced to come from behind to secure victory after Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring for Spain midway through the first half at Basel’s St Jakob-Park.

Having been introduced from the bench in place of the injured Lauren James, Chloe Kelly was once again proved to be England’s super sub as she delivered a pinpoint cross for Alessio Russo’s 57th-minute header to make it all square.

And it was Kelly’s spot-kick at the end of a nerve-jangling shootout that saw the holders get their hands on the trophy – three years on from their famous victory over Germany at Wembley.

Sarina Wiegman’s side looked have got off to a dream start in the shootout as Beth Mead sent Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll the wrong way from 12 yards, despite slipping in her run-up.

However, replays clearly showed that Mead had touched the ball twice before finding the back of the net, meaning she was forced to start over and retake her penalty – which was subsequently saved.

The Arsenal forward – England’s player of the tournament in 2022 – would have had her mouth as Leah Williamson’s tame effort was denied by Coll, with England holding a 2-1 advantage.

FBL-WOMEN-EURO-2025-FINAL-ENG-ESP
England prevailed on penalties (Picture: Getty)

But Spanish winger Salma Paralluelo dragged her strike wide to ensure the trophy would remain with England, as long as Kelly was successful with her strike.

With fans watching through their fingers, Kelly nervelessly stuttered her way to the spot before sending England’s travelling support into raptures with the decisive kick of the match to give Wiegman’s side an unassailable 3-1 lead.

Why was Beth Mead allowed to take her penalty twice?

Just last month, the law was changed on ‘double-touch’ penalties after Julian Alvarez’s spot-kick in Atletico Madrid’s Champions League last-16 defeat to Real Madrid was controversially disallowed.

Alvarez had his effort chalked off after slipping and making contact with his standing leg – and Real Madrid went on to prevail to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Issuing a clarification to Law 14 in response, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) confirmed that penalties which had been touched twice would, from this point on, be allowed to be retaken in cases where it was ‘clearly unintentional’ – but only if the kick was successful.

Atletico de Madrid v Real Madrid C.F. - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Round of 16 Second Leg
The law changed in the wake of Alvarez’s spot-kick against Real Madrid (Picture: Getty)

‘UEFA will immediately implement the clarification provided by IFAB of Law 14 with regard to cases of double touch of the ball by the player taking a penalty kick,’ an official statement on UEFA’s website read.

‘Consequently, all UEFA matches, starting with the UEFA Nations League semi-final between Germany and Portugal on 4 June 2025 will now be played under the new interpretation of Law 14.

‘FIFA confirmed that this will be the case for European Qualifiers too.’

Sarina Wiegman explains decision to leave out Jess Carter for England’s Euro 2025 semi-final with Italy

England v Jamaica - Women's International Friendly
Jess Carter starts on the bench for England against Italy (Picture: Getty)

Sarina Wiegman says the decision to leave Jess Carter out England’s starting XI for the side’s Women’s Euro 2025 semi-final with Italy was purely ‘tactical’.

Just days after the Lionesses’ tense quarter-final victory over Sweden, Carter revealed that she had received racist abuse throughout the campaign and would be ‘taking a step back’ from social media.

The rest of Wiegman’s England squad have rallied around the Gotham FC star in the intervening days, while FIFA boss Gianni Infantino came out condemning the vile online messages.

Carter’s omission is the only change to the side that overcame Sweden on penalties last Thursday, with the centre-back instead named on the substitutes bench in Geneva this evening.

The 27-year-old, who started all four of England’s previous contests, has been replaced by Washington Spirit’s Esme Morgan, who starts alongside captain Leah Williamson at the back.

There had been some uncertainty over Williamson’s involvement after the England skipper left the Sweden match in a protective boot following an ankle knock – but Wiegman’s side go into the clash with a fully fit squad.

Asked whether the decision to name Carter on the bench was a ‘tactical’ one, Wiegman told ITV Sport: ‘Yes, that decision is based on the tactical challenges that we have.

‘We think in this game that it is best to put Esme in.’

England's starting XI to face Italy

England XI: Hampton, Bronze, Williamson, Morgan, Greenwood, Walsh, Stanway, Toone, James, Russo, Hemp

Substitutes: Keating, Moorhouse, Charles, Mead, Le Tissier, Clinton, Carter, Agyemang, Kelly, Beever-Jones, Park, Wubben-Moy

Wiegman insisted Carter was ready to make an impact off the bench should the opportunity present itself at the Geneva Stadium.

‘Jess is good,’ she added.

‘Of course, a lot of things have been going on, but she trained well and she’s ready to compete and ready to play.’

Carter’s replacement in the side, Morgan, is more than ready to step up and do a job alongside Williamson, according to Wiegman.

‘It’s a huge night for Esme and it’s a huge night for everyone. She’s ready, she has been ready for a while,’ the England manager continued.

‘She had to wait for that and she showed that other night and I hope she does really well, of course.’

England v Italy - UEFA Women's EURO 2025 Semi-Final
Williamson has shaken off an ankle problem to make the XI (Picture: Getty)

Wiegman went on: ‘We’re going to do our very best to play at our best and let’s see what it brings us.

‘We want to take our game to the next level all the time and then we have different challenges.

‘Italy will challenge us again, they have played in different shapes, they are tactical and they adapt to what the opponent does so that’s a challenge in itself tonight.

‘I hope we have the ball a lot and we can be on the ball a lot, but we’ll see.’

Following Carter’s sickening revelation, Wiegman revealed that her squad would no longer be taking the knee before matches as the gesture was not having a ‘good enough’ impact.

‘Taking the knee, that’s not enough. We have done that for a while. The impact is not good enough, it’s not as big as we think,’ she told BBC Sport on Monday.

‘When there is this form of racism we felt we have to do something else, something different, so that’s why we are not taking the knee.”

The Lionesses will instead be standing at kick-off rather than kneeling.

‘We feel like it has gone past that [taking the knee] now,’ England midfielder Georgia Stanway explained.

‘We feel it is still happening even when we are taking the knee. We have decided that we will stand and we will not do that.

‘We think that is a way of making change in itself because we want to get people talking – we want to tell people that what is being done isn’t enough.’

Chelsea set astonishing asking price for Manchester United transfer target

Chelsea FC v Paris Saint-Germain: Final - FIFA Club World Cup 2025
Nicolas Jackson appears likely to be deemed surplus to requirements by Chelsea (Picture: Getty)

Chelsea have set an astonishing asking price for Nicolas Jackson who has emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United.

The Blues spent £32million on the Senegal international who joined the west London club from Villarreal two years ago.

Jackson has shown flashes of potential during two turbulent years at Stamford Bridge but has been let down by inconsistent finishing and a suspect temperament.

Sent off in a potentially decisive defeat against Newcastle at the end of last season, Jackson was again in hot water when he was dismissed in Chelsea Club World Cup defeat against Flamengo.

Jackson was used sparing thereafter and made only one subsequent appearance as a second half substitute against Fluminense.

With Joao Pedro having made a sensational start to his Chelsea career and fellow summer recruit Liam Delap also an option, Jackson looks likely to fall down the pecking order should he stay and fight for his place.

With United’s increasingly desperate search for a new centre forward intensifying, however, Chelsea have upped their valuation of a player who also has admirers at Liverpool.

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea will demand between £80m and £100m having taken note of the fee Liverpool are willing to pay for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, begun their pre-season campaign against Leeds United on Saturday having made just two significant additions to their squad.

Matheus Cunha’s move from Wolves was wrapped up early in the window with the minimum of fuss, while it remains to be seen how prominently teenager Diego Leon will feature following his move from Cerro Porteno.

Ruben Amorim had hoped that Bryan Mbeumo’s transfer would have been resolved by now, but Brentford’s refusal to be railroaded into a sale has seen that saga drag on.

Chelsea FC v Paris Saint-Germain: Final - FIFA Club World Cup 2025
The arrival of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro has pushed Jackson towards the exit (Picture: Getty)

United are confident that a third bid, closer to the Bees valuation, will see the Cameroon forward join imminently, but United are still desperately short of attacking options.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both been linked with returns to Serie A having failed to convince they are worthy of being regarded as United’s main source of goals.

United had shown interest in Amorim’s former Sporting Lisbon charge, Viktor Gyokeres, but the Sweden international has been steadfast in his determination to join the Gunners.

Amorim’s club still maintain an interest in Benjamin Sesko but are unlikely to be able to match RB Leipzig’s demands.

‘Hard to come by’ – Man Utd urged to sign £34m former Chelsea star

Manchester United FC v West Ham United FC - Premier League
Manchester United are on the hunt for more additions (Picture: Getty)

Manchester United have been urged to consider a move for Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher to beef up their options in central midfield.

The Red Devils’ early transfer activity has focused on improving their attacking output after a dismal season last time out under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves, while United are now close to signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.

A move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson could also be in the works after United held talks with the striker’s representatives.

But United are looking to make signings, elsewhere, and will no doubt need further cover in central midfield following the departure of Christian Eriksen at the start of the summer.

And former United midfielder Gordon Strachan reckons Ruben Amorim’s side would benefit from Gallagher’s talents to provide some much-needed energy in the middle of the park.

‘Man Utd don’t need a bit more bite, they need legs, real legs, real closing down,’ he told OLBG.

‘Can Conor Gallagher do that? Yes he can, he’s definitely got legs, he’s a good team mate.

‘Has he got enough imagination? I don’t know, but if you have people like that with legs in there and have imagination around them, then he’d be a good signing.

‘The days of the luxury player, if you want to be a top side, are gone. So, Conor Gallagher has definitely got the legs.

Chelsea FC v AFC Bournemouth - Premier League

‘He’s got the robustness. Has he got goals? Has he got that flair? These players are hard to come by.

‘Would I take him compared to some of the players that I’ve played over the last couple of years at Man Utd? Yes, I would.”

Gallagher enjoyed an impressive maiden season at Atletico after joining from Chelsea for £34million, but could find his future in a state of limbo after the signing of Thiago Almada from Botafogo.

Almada’s arrival means Diego Simeone’s side now has four non-EU players, which exceeds the threshold of three allowed within a La Liga squad.

Samuel Lino and Nahuel Molina are the other two non-EU players at Atletico, with Spanish outlet COPE reporting that one non-EU player is now expected to leave this summer.

Nottingham Forest identify Morgan Gibbs-White replacement amid Tottenham transfer battle

Nottingham Forest v AS Monaco - Pre-Season Friendly
Nottingham Forest are determined not to let Morgan Gibbs-White join Tottenham (Photo: Getty)

Nottingham Forest reportedly want to sign an England hero should Morgan Gibbs-White complete a £60million transfer to Tottenham.

Two weeks ago, Gibbs-White looked destined to join Spurs after they triggered his release clause and booked his medical.

But the deal is on hold with Forest threatening legal action against their Premier League rivals, as they believe Tottenham made an illegal approach for their star player.

The Three Lions midfielder still wants to move to north London but has remained professional throughout the saga, reporting for training and starting Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Monaco.

Gibbs-White moved to the City Ground from Wolves in 2022 in a deal worth up to £42m and last season recorded 17 goal contributions as he helped Forest qualify for Europe.

Forest have no intention of selling the 25-year-old, having already seen Anthony Elanga join Newcastle, but have lined-up a replacement just in case.

The Telegraph report that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are among the clubs pushing to sign Manchester City star James McAtee, who is valued at £35m.

Manchester City FC v Aston Villa FC - Premier League

Despite being highly-rated, Pep Guardiola has scarcely given McAtee a chance to show his worth, giving him just three Premier League starts last season.

West Ham, Borussia Dortmund and Frankfurt are also pursuing the 22-year-old, who turned down the chance to play at the Club World Cup to instead captain England to glory at the U21 Euros.

McAtee recently met with the German clubs and was impressed by their offers, while the Irons believe he could replace Mohammed Kudus who recently joined Spurs for £55m.

However, all four interested clubs don’t agree with City’s price tag and instead value the attacking midfielder, who has entered the last year of his contract, at £20-25m.

Manchester United had previously been linked with a shock move for the Citizen but their interest has almost certainly cooled following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Forest are about to embark on their pre-season tour of Portugal and kick-off the new season, with or without Gibbs-White and McAtee, on August 17 against Brentford.

Sverre Nypan explains why he chose to join Man City after snubbing Arsenal

Sverre Nypan said the chance to be coached by the ‘best in the world’ Pep Guardiola was a key factor in his decision to join Manchester City.

A number of Premier League clubs were interested in signing the young Norwegian midfielder following his impressive performances at Rosenborg.

Arsenal, at one point, believed that they had stolen on a march on City in the race to sign Nypan and were hopeful that the influence exerted by Norway’s national team captain Martin Odegaard could help seal a deal.

However, having waited until the summer to make his decision, the 18-year-old has instead chosen to join City in a deal worth £12.5million.

Nypan has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, but is expected to spend next season out on loan to continue his development.

Despite that, the teenager admitted that the possibility of working under Guardiola was a key reason why he turned down other clubs in favour of City.

‘I am incredibly happy and proud to have joined Manchester City,’ Nypan said as his signing was announced.

Republic of Ireland v Norway - UEFA European U21 Championship Qualifier

‘It’s a dream for any young footballer to become part of this Club and to join such a group of world class talent.

‘I am still very young with a lot to learn but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world, will only help me to become a better player.

‘There is already a special connection between Norway and Manchester City through Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb, and I am very proud to have become the latest Norwegian player to have joined the club.’

Nypan continues City’s busy summer window and is their fifth signing after Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Marcus Bettinelli.

City Director of Football Hugo Viana said: ‘Sverre is an exciting young player that the Club has been monitoring for quite some time now.
