Caoimhin Kelleher injury latest as Brentford goalkeeper misses pre-season friendly

Caoimhin Kelleher missed Brentford’s final pre-season friendly on Friday (Getty)

Caoimhin Kelleher is an early injury doubt for Brentford’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest next Sunday.

The Republic of Ireland international joined Brentford in a £18 million deal from Liverpool in June.

Kelleher travelled with the squad for their pre-season training camp in Portugal this summer and played in friendlies against Gil Vicente and QPR.

However, the 26-year-old missed Brentford’s final pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday, with Hakon Valdimarsson deputising in goal.

Brentford were also without Kevin Schade, who scored 11 goals in the Premier League last season, and Brazilian forward Gustavo Nunes, who was forced off after 10 minutes with a hamstring injury during the friendly against Gil Vicente two weeks ago.

When asked about Nunes’ injury on Friday, Andrews said: ‘Exact time scale, I’m not entirely sure.

‘Certainly not in the Kevin [Schade] and Caoihmin [Kelleher] territory of short-term.

‘It will be more significant than that, it will be weeks.’

Brentford begin their Premier League campaign away to Nottingham Forest next Sunday.

The Bees will then host Aston Villa in their first home game of the new Premier League season on August 23.

Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool to walk away from ‘messy’ £150m transfer deal

Liverpool should not spend £150m on Alexander Isak, says Jamie Carragher (Picture: The Overlap)

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has declared that his old club should walk away from a ‘messy’ £150m transfer deal to sign Alexander Isak.

The Premier League champions are hoping to land the Newcastle United striker this summer – and saw their first offer of around £110m rejected.

It’s thought that Newcastle are holding out for closer to £150m for Isak but football pundit Carragher has argued that the move ‘doesn’t feel right’.

Liverpool have already splashed out £79m to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike ahead of the 2025-26 season, who would become a back-up to Isak if the Reds ended up signing the Sweden international.

‘Something about it doesn’t feel right’

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher said: ‘He (Isak) will be an amazing signing but from a fan’s point of view for myself, I don’t want Liverpool to spend £150m on Isak.

‘There’s something about Liverpool buying another striker (Ekitike), and he’s backup. Something about it doesn’t feel right to me.

‘I look at Isak, and he’s obviously thrown his toys out the pram once Arsenal signed a striker and Liverpool signed a striker. It feels a bit messy to me now.

‘For me, when I think of Liverpool, it doesn’t look really planned. I don’t think the plan is to buy a striker for £80 million, and then be looking to buy another one for £120 million.

‘In terms of what Liverpool have done in the summer by bringing in players, they’ve spent a lot of money and it doesn’t feel like the Liverpool way of doing things so much.’

Liverpool v Athletic Club Bilbao - Pre-Season Friendly

Isak told Newcastle at the end of the July that he wants to leave St James’ Park before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.

The 25-year-old has pretty much gone on strike to try and force an exit, with Isak recently training alone at his former club Real Sociedad, despite being under contract with Newcastle until the summer of 2028.

Howe sends message to Isak after rejected bid

Eddie Howe, manager of the Magpies, admits the situation is ‘far from ideal’ but still hopes to see the unsettled star back in a Newcastle shirt.

‘I was made aware there was a bid,’ Howe said. ‘That bid was turned down.

‘There are people back in England dealing with the situation. I really don’t know what is going to happen next, but from our perspective, we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.’

Asked if Liverpool’s interest had unsettled Isak ahead of the new season, Howe replied: ‘It’s difficult, because you don’t know what is going to happen from this point.

‘The reality is we had a first bid from Liverpool and that was turned down. From this point onwards, let’s see what happens.’

Manchester United have made an enquiry to sign Alexander Isak (Reuters)

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has received a surprise approach from Manchester United, according to reports.

Liverpool have seen their £110 million bid for the 25-year-old rejected by Newcastle this week.

The Premier League champions are now willing to end talks with Newcastle and are not planning to increase their offer for the Sweden international.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are understood to be holding out for a £150m fee for their striker, who has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances during his three years at St James’ Park.

Manchester United are also in the market for a new striker and are now pushing ahead with a deal to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko before the start of the new Premier League season.

However, Sky Germany report that United made an enquiry for Isak this week but the striker has made it clear that he only wants to join Liverpool.

RB Leipzig v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga

Isak is attempting to force through a move away from St James’ Park and is currently training away from the first-team squad in Spain at his former club Real Sociedad.

The striker joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in a £60m deal in August 2022.

Speaking last week, Alan Shearer urged Newcastle to sell Isak if their asking price is met.

‘Eddie Howe has to use all his persuasive powers to do what he can and try to make him stay at least one more year,’ Shearer told Betfair.

‘If that can’t happen then it is what it is. You have to get the very best deal for the football club and if someone is prepared to pay north of £150 million, and if he really, really wants to go, you can’t step in his way.

‘Isak has been brilliant for Newcastle, helped us achieve our dream of winning a trophy and if there’s no way whatsoever that he can be persuaded to stay at Newcastle, then they have to get the best deal possible and if someone’s prepared to pay what they want, you have to say thank you and build for the future.

‘There’s no individual bigger than the football club.’
