Chelsea confirm loan signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez

Chelsea have completed a last-ditch deadline day deal to take Saul Niguez on loan from Atletico Madrid until the end of the season.

The Champions League winners will pay an initial loan fee of around £3.4m and have the option to buy the 26-year-old midfielder outright for £30m (€35m) in 12 months’ time.

Thomas Tuchel had been intent on strengthening his midfield options for the season ahead and Saul adds yet more quality to a squad already boasting the likes of Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount.

The Spain international is one of just two new senior players through the doors at Stamford Bridge this summer, following Romelu Lukaku’s club-record £97.5million transfer from Inter Milan last month.

Saul slipped down the pecking order under Diego Simeone as Atleti won La Liga for the first time since 2014 last term and all parties were in agreement over a switch to west London.

Chelsea supporters were made to wait for confirmation of Saul’s temporary move and an official announcement finally arrived just before midnight, with clubs given an hour after the deadline to lodge all of the necessary paperwork.

‘I am very excited to start this new challenge with Chelsea,’ Saul told Chelsea’s website.

‘Blues fans, I am one of you now and I can’t wait to wear the shirt, start training and see all of you. See you soon!’

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia believes the club are adding a ‘proven winner’ to their ranks and is confident Saul has all the attributes to help the club achieve their goals this season.

‘We welcome Saul to the club and believe he completes our squad as we compete for honours in five different competitions this season,’ she said.

‘He is a proven winner, a player with huge experience and we know he will be very well-suited to the challenges that face us on all fronts in the coming year.’

The Spaniard, who rose from Atleti’s academy to play for the first-team, is expected to fly to London over the coming 48 hours.

Saul has scored 43 goals in 340 appearances for Atletico Madrid across his decade-long spell in the first-team at the Wanda Metropolitano.

In that time, the midfielder has helped his boyhood team win two Europa League trophies, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and last year’s La Liga title.

Saul – who has been capped 19 times at international level – has been keen to boost his minutes at an elite club after missing out on a place in Luis Enrique’s squad for Euro 2020.

Takehiro Tomiyasu promises to ‘give everything’ for Arsenal as squad number is revealed

Arsenal new boy Takehiro Tomiyasu has promised Arsenal supporters he will ‘give everything to contribute for the team’ after completing a deadline day switch from Bologna.

The Gunners agreed to pay an initial fee of around £17million for Tomiyasu after stepping up their move for the defender’s signature in the final few hours of the summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta had been determined to strengthen at the back – with Arsenal shipping nine goals in a disastrous start to the Premier League campaign – and Tomiyasu arrives in north London as a versatile option given he can cover both centre-half and right-back.

It was a frantic few hours from Arsenal’s perspective, with Hector Bellerin, Reiss Nelson and Alex Runarsson all securing on loan moves away from the Emirates before Tomiyasu was unveiled.

The Japan international becomes Arsenal’s sixth new arrival of a busy window, following Ben White, Nuno Tavares, Martin Odegaard, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Aaron Ramsdale through the doors this summer for a combined fee of around £140m.

‘Hi, Arsenal supporters! I’m so happy to be part of the team,’

Tomiyasu said in a short video posted on Arsenal’s social media pages.

‘I promise you that I will give everything to contribute for the team.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing you in the stadium.’

Arsenal confirmed that

Tomiyasu will take over the No.18 shirt this season which was most recently worn by Thomas Partey. However, the number has been vacant after the Ghana midfielder switched to his favoured No.5 for the new campaign.

The No.18 jersey was worn by Mikael Silvestre, Sebastien Squillaci and Nacho Monreal before Partey’s arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Arteta said the club had brought in a defender with ‘

high technical ability and composure on the ball’.

‘Takehiro is a strong defender with good experience in Serie A and at international level,’ the Spaniard said.

‘He’s a versatile defender with great defensive qualities, high technical ability and composure on the ball. He will be an important member of our squad.

‘We look forward to Takehiro joining up with us when he returns from international duty.’

Arsenal technical director Edu added: ‘We’re delighted to have signed Takehiro.

‘We’ve been watching him for a while now and we’re pleased that we have reached an agreement with Bologna. He is an important addition to our squad.’

Arsenal confirm signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu

Arsenal have completed a deadline day deal to sign Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Mikel Arteta has been intent on adding further quality to his defensive options following the arrival of Ben White and Nuno Tavares this summer and Arsenal accelerated their pursuit of

Tomiyasu in the final hours of the transfer window.

The Gunners will pay an initial fee of around £17million – plus £2.5m in easily achievable add-ons – for Tomiyasu’s signature and the 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year contract in north London.

The Japan international is primarily a centre-back but also provides cover at right-back and his versatility proved a key factor for Arsenal, with Hector Bellerin completing a season-long loan move to Real Betis.

‘Takehiro is a strong defender with good experience in Serie A and at international level,’ Arsenal head coach Arteta told the club’s official website.

Tomiyasu had been heavily linked with Tottenham earlier this summer, with Arsenal’s bitter rivals even holding talks with the Japanese’s camp prior to his participation at the Olympics.

However, Spurs instead ramped up their move for a more out-and-out full-back in Barcelona’s Emerson, who completed a switch to the Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £26m this evening.

Tomiyasu’s arrival takes Arsenal’s expenditure this summer to a total of around £140million, the most of any club in the Premier League.

The ex-Bologna star becomes the Gunners’ sixth new arrival of a busy window, following White, Tavares, Martin Odegaard, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Aaron Ramsdale through the doors at the Emirates.

Hector Bellerin has completed a deadline day loan move from Arsenal to Real Betis.

The 26-year-old full-back underwent a medical in London on Tuesday and is expected to fly to Seville in the next 48 hours.

Since breaking into Arsenal’s first-team back in 2013, Bellerin has made 239 appearances in all competitions for the north London outfit and helped the club win three FA Cups and three Community Shields.

The Spain international did not feature in any of the Gunners’ three opening games in the Premier League, with Mikel Arteta opting for Calum Chambers and Cedric Soares at right-back.

‘Everyone at Arsenal wishes Hector the best of luck with Real Betis this season,’ a statement Arsenal’s website said this evening.

Betis, the club supported by Bellerin’s father, teased the defender’s arrival over the course of the evening on social media before officially unveiling their new arrival with half an hour remaining of the transfer window.

Shortly after Bellerin’s temporary move was confirmed, Arsenal announced that they had reached an agreement to sign Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Tomiyasu is primarily a centre-half but is also comfortable playing at right-back and his versatility was a key factor in the Gunners deciding to part with £17million for his signature.

The 22-year-old Japan international has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at the Emirates.

‘Takehiro is a strong defender with good experience in Serie A and at international level,’ Arsenal manager Arteta told Arsenal’s official website.

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani shuts down talk of deadline day move to Barcelona

Manchester United star Edinson Cavani has distanced himself from speculation that he could be set for a last-ditch move to Barcelona this summer.

The 34-year-old centre-forward has been heavily linked with Barca leading up to the transfer deadline, with Cristiano Ronaldo sealing a sensational return to Old Trafford last Friday.

Eyebrows were raised when United signed Cavani on a short-term deal last October – given the Uruguayan’s age – but he hit back at his critics last season with 17 goals in 39 games in all competitions before agreeing a one-year contract extension.

However, for several months now, rumours have been circulating that Cavani has struggled to settle in the north west and the veteran striker had looked set to seal a switch to Boca Juniors at the start of the summer.

There have subsequently been reports the attacker could be keen on a move to the Camp Nou, with Ronald Koeman identifying him as a potential target up front.

But Cavani took to Instagram this evening to shut down the recent speculation and confirm he has no intention of going anywhere.

The ex-PSG and Napoli ace shared a post to his stories which read: ‘Edinson Cavani will 100% NOT join Barcelona on Deadline Day.’

He also reposted separate graphic from Manchester United’s official account, showing him performing his iconic celebration in front of Ronaldo and the rest of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Last week, former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves suggested Cavani could find himself surplus to requirements following the arrival Ronaldo.

‘Could it be Cavani and [Anthony] Martial? You could see someone go out,’ he said.

‘Cavani’s been amazing for Manchester United but Cristiano is Cristiano.

‘He will want that number seven shirt and I’m guessing Cavani will respect that.

‘Maybe Cavani will go somewhere where he’ll play more regularly.

‘Martial would be a great swap, you’d think there would be a lot of takers for him.’

Cristiano Ronaldo pictured in Manchester United kit for first time since sensational return

Cristiano Ronaldo has been pictured wearing Manchester United’s kit for the first time since sealing a return to Old Trafford this summer.

In an extraordinary turn of events last Friday, Ronaldo, 36, looked set to join fierce rivals Manchester City before changing his mind – with Sir Alex Ferguson and Rio Ferdinand intervening – and rejoining the Red Devils, 12 years after leaving the club.

The iconic forward, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Old Trafford and United have the option to extend his contract by another year.

And though Ronaldo’s new number is still yet to be revealed – with Edinson Cavani hanging on to the No.7 for the time being – a series of snaps from an official photoshoot were released on Tuesday night, showing the Portuguese proudly showing off the famous red of United once again.

Ronaldo was with United for years in his initial spell, helping the club win three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2007/08.

The attacker established himself as one of the greatest players in history across a phenomenal nine-year stay with Real Madrid before spending the next three years of his career in Italy with Juventus.

The Turin outfit finished last season down in fourth place but Ronaldo ended the campaign as the top scorer in the division with an incredible tally of 29 goals in 33 appearances.

Discussing his return for the first time earlier this week, Ronaldo said he was looking forward to playing in front of a rocking Theatre of Dreams once again.

‘Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday,’ Ronaldo told the club’s website.

‘I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again.

I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.’

On Ronaldo’s arrival, United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: ‘Of course the fans have been excited for the last couple of days, we all are of course. He has had such a great career and he has been here before.

‘He is going to give everybody a boost, of course. I played with him, he’s a great player, he is a top human being, he is a top professional, so he will give everybody in the squad and everybody around the club a buzz.’

Solskjaer is confident Ronaldo still has what it takes to take the Premier League by storm at the age of 36.

‘He’s a more experienced player than when he was here last time. He’s evolved and had an unbelievable career,’ the Norwegian added.

‘All the talk about how he’s too old… just make it personal and he’ll show what he can do.’

Harry Kane insists he has clear conscience and Tottenham reputation is intact after Man City transfer saga

Tottenham Hotspur v Watford - Premier League
Harry Kane is trying to put the summer’s transfer sage behind him (Picture: Getty Images)

Harry Kane says he has a clear conscience after the summer transfer saga linking him with a move to Manchester City, and feels that his reputation at Tottenham will remain unharmed despite the unrest.

Kane pushed for a move to the Premier League champions over the summer, missing training sessions after the Euro 2020 campaign with England and not being available for Tottenham’s opening game of the season, ironically against Man City.

However, the move never materialised and he is now set to remain in north London, at least for another season and help continue Tottenham’s excellent start to the season which has seen them win their opening three games and top the Premier League table.

The 28-year-old has moved to play down the transfer saga which ran and ran over the summer, saying he was comfortable with the situation throughout.

‘After the final [of Euro 2020], I was in England for a few days then went off on holiday for a couple weeks,’ Kane told talkSPORT.

‘When I’m away I’m rarely on my phone to be honest. I really try and use that time to get away from everything.

‘I know there was a lot of noise surrounding me but I was quite calm. I knew what the situation was between me and the club and that’s the way it’ll stay.

‘Everyone has their opinions on it but that’s part and parcel of the profession we’re in.’

Kane has now returned to the Tottenham side under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, starting in the 1-0 win over Watford at the weekend, and he feels his reputation at the club is intact, despite the desire to play elsewhere.

Tottenham Hotspur v Watford - Premier League

Asked if he feels his reputation has been harmed over the last couple of months, he said: ‘No, I don’t think so.

‘I think anyone involved in the football industry knows the ins and outs. I was quite calm with the situation, but when you’re in it and you know the truth, then your conscience is clear.

‘There’s always going to be noise. My whole career I’ve had ups and downs from when I’m young to where I am, that’s just part and parcel of it.

‘I’ll look forward now, the aim has always been to win silverware with Tottenham and it’s been that aim every year.’

Paris Saint-Germain turn down Real Madrid bid of ‘more than £189m’ for Kylian Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain have turned down a bid worth ‘more than €220m (£189m)’ for Kylian Mbappe from Real Madrid, despite the striker being out of contract next year, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has stated that he wants to leave PSG this summer and move to Real Madrid, but the French club has already rejected two bids.

Given that he is out of contract at the end of the season and can sign a pre-contract agreement with Real in January, it was expected that the La Liga club would simply wait a few months to get their man.

However, Sky Sports report that Real Madrid came in with another absolutely monstrous bid of €220m (£189m) for the France international, trying to snap him up before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.

PSG did not outright reject it, according to the report, but stalled and did not get back to Real Madrid who have since walked away from the deal.

Mbappe is now likely to sign that pre-contract agreement with Real in January and join them on a free transfer in he summer of 2022, meaning that while PSG get another season out of the prolific striker, they will miss out on an enormous amount of money.

PSG spent a similar amount (€222) on Neymar when they brough him in from Barcelona in 2017, while they also spent €180 on Mbappe the following year.

The amount Real Madrid were willing to pay for Mbappe would have shattered their own transfer record which was set when they bought Eden Hazard from Chelsea for €100m in 2019.

Cristiano Ronaldo has shared his delight at returning to Manchester United after the club officially confirmed that the transfer had been completed on deadline day.

The Red Devils announced they had agreed a fee with Juventus for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner on Friday afternoon, though the deal was subject to personal terms being agreed and a medical.

Ronaldo is believed to have taken a significant pay-cut on his Juve salary, though will still become the highest paid player in the Premier League, while he passed a medical with flying colours over the weekend.

Early on Tuesday morning the Italian side confirmed that Ronaldo’s move had gone through, with United agreeing to pay €15million (£12.8m) plus €8m (£6.8m) in add-ons, payable over the course of the next five years.

Now United have also confirmed Ronaldo’s transfer, with the 36-year-old returning to Old Trafford after 12 years away, and he is thrilled to be back at the club where he established himself as one of football’s greatest players.

‘Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday,’ said Ronaldo.

‘I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again.

‘I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.’

Ronaldo spent six years at United in his first spell at the club, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the first of his five Ballon d’Or honours.

After enjoying enormous success at Real Madrid, winning the Champions League on four occasions, he moved to Juventus in 2018 and netted 101 goals in 134 appearances in all competitions.

Despite Juventus enduring a difficult campaign last season, only finishing fourth, Ronaldo still led Serie A’s goalscoring charts with 29 goals.

Juventus confirm fee Manchester United will pay for Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United will pay an initial £12.8million to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, with the payment spread over the next five years.

The 36-year-old’s return to Old Trafford is expected to be confirmed today and the Portugal captain is likely to sign a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Ronaldo had a year to run on his deal in Turin and Juventus had simply been keen to get a fee for the former Real Madrid star, who they signed for £99m in 2018.

And the Old Lady confirmed today that United will pay at least £12.8m to sign Ronaldo, with a further £6.8m based on the forward’s success at Old Trafford.

‘Juventus Football Club announces that an agreement with Manchester United FC for the definitive disposal of the registration rights of the player Cristiano Ronaldo has been reached for a consideration of 15million euros payable in five financial years, which might be increased, up to a maximum of 8m euros, upon achievement of specific performance objectives over the duration of the employment contract with the player,’ a statement read.’

Daniel James is set to join Leeds United before the transfer window closes, with the Red Devils hoping to make a profit of around £14m on the Wales winger.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were close to signing James in 2019 but a move to Elland Road broke down in January and he moved to Old Trafford that summer for around £16m.

The Yorkshire club are now set to pay an initial £25m for James, with the deal likely to rise to £30m.

Arsenal’s hopes of deadline day Hector Bellerin exit under threat from Tottenham

Arsenal’s hopes of selling Hector Bellerin on deadline day are under severe threat from their north London rivals Tottenham, according to reports in Spain.

Bellerin has made it clear to Arsenal that he wants to leave this summer, with the Gunners willing to sanction a move if an acceptable bid is made.

It is being widely reported that Spanish club Real Betis are willing to take the Spaniard on a season-long loan deal, but they also have other options including Tottenham outcast Serge Aurier, according to AS.

With Betis midfielder William Carvalho refusing to leave the club this summer, it seems unlikely that the Spanish giants are able to free up enough money to fund any deal for Bellerin.

Spurs are hopeful of completing a deal for former Betis defender Emerson Royal on Tuesday, who rejoined his former club Barcelona in the summer, in a transfer which could be worth up to £25m.

Betis are reportedly set to receive £5m from the Emerson deal, while a move for Ivory Coast International Aurier, who only has one year left on his contract at Spurs, would set them back the same amount.

Emerson Royal will move to Spurs from Barcelona on Tuesday.

Emerson also attracted interest from north London rivals Arsenal, but reports suggest he prefers a move to Spurs.

If the move goes through, it would be a massive blow for Arsenal who were hopeful of selling Bellerin before Tuesday’s deadline.

The Gunners also want to sell outcasts Reiss Nelson, who looks like to leave on a season-long loan to Dutch giants Feyenoord, Eddie Nketiah and Alex Runarsson before the window slams shut.

Meanwhile Tottenham will be quietly confident with their business this summer after finding themselves top of the Premier League table after three matches.
