Bruno Fernandes believes the supporters, the stadium and the…shorts are behind the fantastic start he has made to his Manchester United career.

The 25-year-old signed from Sporting in January for a whopping £67.6m and is already living up to that mammoth price tag with a string of impressive performances.

The Portugal international is yet to taste defeat in nine matches as a Manchester United player and has already notched up two goals and three assists in just five Premier League appearances.

Things could scarcely have gone better for the midfielder so far, and he has put his fine start down to a number of factors, but chiefly the fantastic support of the Old Trafford faithful.

‘It is difficult to say one thing because at Manchester United, going out at Old Trafford, everybody knows about the stadium and the atmosphere,’ Fernandes told the official Manchester United website.

‘But when you have the kit of Manchester United, all red, with your black shorts, and you feel the atmosphere of the stadium, and you feel everything, you feel the support of your fans, it is something special.

‘For me, for example, when I came from Sporting, I arrived and I was in Manchester for two days. I played against Wolves and they already had a song for me! I had just arrived and the supporters already gave me the support I need to be confident and be at home.

‘I think this is the most important thing, that atmosphere and love you feel from your supporters.’

Fernandes’ early Manchester United appearances have all been without Paul Pogba in the side, who has been struggling with an ankle injury for the majority of the season.

However, the Frenchman is expected to be fit and available as and when the Premier League returns and Fernandes is excited about the prospect of lining up alongside him.

‘I know Paul from Juve, because I played against him in Italy. And believe me, it’s really hard to play against Paul,’ he said earlier this month.

‘Because I play in midfield, I mark him. We play in the same line, so it’s really difficult to play against Paul, because he has power, he has technique.

‘It’s difficult to find a player like Paul: big, strong and technical. It’s difficult to find a player like this, and he has a lot of qualities. I hope he comes [back] soon.’
