Bundesliga fans will have to wait a little longer for the return of Jadon Sancho after the winger was named on the bench for Borussia Dortmund’s derby clash with Schalke due to a calf problem.

Sancho’s phenomenal season was brought to a halt by the coronavirus crisis back in March and the 20-year-old will have been itching to return to first-team action in Dortmund colours this weekend.

The England international has established himself as one of the most lethal attacking players in world football, racking up 14 goals and 15 assists in the German top flight this term, and his performances have made him a target for Europe’s elite.

Manchester United are at the front of the queue for Sancho’s signature but Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool and Chelsea all remain in the race for youngster.

Sancho looked set for another chance to put himself in the shop window this afternoon after being pictured in training with the rest of his Dortmund team-mates last week.

However, Lucien Favre has decided not to risk Sancho from the start considering he has been struggling with a minor calf issue.

The Dortmund head coach has opted for an attack of Erling Haaland, Julian Brandt and Giovanni Reyna in Sancho’s absence, with Thomas Delaney and Mahmoud Dahoud starting in central midfield.

Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo who, like Sancho, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, also starts on the bench for Schalke at an empty Westfalenstadion.

Earlier this week, Dortmund boss Favre confirmed confirmed that both Axel Witsel and Emre Can would miss out against Schalke through injury.

‘Axel Witsel and Emre Can will definitely not be there,’ he said when asked about the two midfielders.

‘We hope that they will be able to return as soon as possible.’

Dortmund are also without their captain Marco Reus (muscle) and central defender Dan-Axel Zagadou (ruptured knee ligament).
