Man Utd consider using England star in bid to win Harry Kane transfer battle

Manchester United are said to be wary of dealing with Daniel Levy in their bid to sign Harry Kane this summer and are already considering an alternative plan to land one of their primary targets.

The England captain effectively handed in a transfer request earlier this week and although Levy is said to have made it clear that he has no intention of parting with his prize asset, a summer-long saga appears inevitable.

Kane’s preferred destination is said to be Manchester City, who are set to lose their all-time record goalscorer Sergio Aguero at the end of the season.

The lure of Pep Guardiola and an almost cast-iron guarantee of the silverware that has evaded Kane thus far in his club career represents major incentives to join the Premier League champions, and Spurs are already reported to have eyed Aguero’s understudy, Gabriel Jesus.

Anthony Martial, meanwhile, who has endured a disappointing season at Old Trafford, is also on Tottenham’s radar should Kane head to City’s rivals, but according to the The Times, in-form England international Jesse Lingard could also be used in part-exchange.

Lingard has enjoyed a purple patch of form since moving to West Ham on loan in January but the east London club are less than optimistic about their chances of signing the 28-year-old on a permanent basis.

Should United miss out on Kane, they are also said to be willing to use Lingard as bait to land Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, having missed out on signing the former Manchester City winger last summer.

Despite Edinson Cavani’s decision to sign a 12-month contract extension last week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not ruling out the possibility of adding another striker to his ranks, with the United boss keeping a keen eye on the situation surrounding his compatriot Erling Haaland, as well as Kane.

Speaking after United’s 1-1 draw against Fulham on Tuesday evening, Solskjaer said: ‘We’re looking to strengthen the squad.

‘Of course there’s many, many, many things that you have to consider when you put a squad together. I am not saying that if Edi stays that means someone else in a forward position won’t come in.’

Asked in his post-match press conference if he could rule out signing a striker, Solskjaer replied: ‘No, of course I can’t.

‘I think you know me well enough, and I don’t think that’s very respectful of any team, any players.

‘There’s loads of good players out there. I could say Messi is interesting, or Ronaldo, but I can’t talk about them, you know.’
