Manchester United star Edinson Cavani has distanced himself from speculation that he could be set for a last-ditch move to Barcelona this summer.

The 34-year-old centre-forward has been heavily linked with Barca leading up to the transfer deadline, with Cristiano Ronaldo sealing a sensational return to Old Trafford last Friday.

Eyebrows were raised when United signed Cavani on a short-term deal last October – given the Uruguayan’s age – but he hit back at his critics last season with 17 goals in 39 games in all competitions before agreeing a one-year contract extension.

However, for several months now, rumours have been circulating that Cavani has struggled to settle in the north west and the veteran striker had looked set to seal a switch to Boca Juniors at the start of the summer.

There have subsequently been reports the attacker could be keen on a move to the Camp Nou, with Ronald Koeman identifying him as a potential target up front.

But Cavani took to Instagram this evening to shut down the recent speculation and confirm he has no intention of going anywhere.

The ex-PSG and Napoli ace shared a post to his stories which read: ‘Edinson Cavani will 100% NOT join Barcelona on Deadline Day.’

He also reposted separate graphic from Manchester United’s official account, showing him performing his iconic celebration in front of Ronaldo and the rest of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Last week, former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves suggested Cavani could find himself surplus to requirements following the arrival Ronaldo.

‘Could it be Cavani and [Anthony] Martial? You could see someone go out,’ he said.

‘Cavani’s been amazing for Manchester United but Cristiano is Cristiano.

‘He will want that number seven shirt and I’m guessing Cavani will respect that.

‘Maybe Cavani will go somewhere where he’ll play more regularly.

‘Martial would be a great swap, you’d think there would be a lot of takers for him.’
