Even Cristiano Ronaldo was impressed by Manchester United’s grand unveiling of Raphael Varane at Old Trafford.
United have been criticised this week for the delay in officially announcing the £42.7 million deal to sign the France international from Real Madrid.
But United made the most of the hold up as they allowed their supporters to give their new signing a huge welcome at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Shortly before their Premier League opener against Leeds United, United confirmed Varane’s transfer and the centre-back walked on to the pitch at Old Trafford holding his new No.19 shirt.
Varane was greeted by a standing ovation from the United fans, while Old Trafford was filled with over 72,000 supporters for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic.
United’s decision to unveil Varane in front of a packed Old Trafford was widely praised, and Ronaldo also appeared to support the gesture as he replied ‘grande’ to Rio Ferdinand’s Instagram video of the event.
United got their season off to the perfect start with a 5-1 victory over Leeds and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described Varane’s pre-match unveiling as a ‘nice moment’ for the World Cup winner.
‘I haven’t spoken to him after the game,’ said Solskjaer.
‘But, of course, it was a nice moment for him and it was a nice moment for the fans, them together, they look forward to seeing them, he looks forward to seeing his teammates.
‘I’m looking forward to working with him. Top professional, I’ve followed his career throughout and you just see the way he conducts himself, the way he lives his life.
‘All the chats I’ve had with him and the club has had with him, we’ve got a top human being and a top player.’
