Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already has plenty of great players at his disposal, but hasn’t got them playing well as a team.
That’s the view of Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann, who isn’t sure about United’s interest in Decan Rice given the money they spent last summer.
The Red Devils signed Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo in the previous transfer window to provide Solskjaer with a squad capable of challenging for trophies.
However, a shaky start this season has fans concerned they are still yet to address their defensive midfield issues.
Despite Donny van de Beek being on the bench, and Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic getting game time, United remain strongly linked with a move for West Ham star Rice.
The England international has been earmarked as Solskjaer’s No.1 target but Hamann feels the 48-year-old can’t keep asking for more money to spend on players.
‘I think it will be hard for him,’ Hamann told talkSPORT.

‘I think his team has to pick up more points and play better. He’s been at the club for approaching three years, you know you have to see progress and improvements, and I can’t really see it.
‘They brought players like [Edinson] Cavani last season, Sancho and Varane – all these players come in and now I’m hearing Solskjaer says Declan Rice is the missing piece in the jigsaw.
‘So I am not sure how big the jigsaw is because it’s getting bigger and bigger.
‘They have brought in so many players and the football is just not good.
‘They are very fortunate to have Ronaldo because, if it wasn’t for his goals, they might be out of the Champions League now and in the Premier League they would be in a worse position as well.
‘For all the money they spent, they’ve got great individuals, great players but haven’t got a good team.’
Solskjaer will be hoping his side bounce back from their 4-2 defeat to Leicester on Saturday with victory over Atalanta in the Champions League tonight.
