Manchester United travel to Spain to take on Villarreal in the Champions League next week and the match has been labelled ‘high risk’ by the anti-violence commission in the country.
The statement from the Interior Ministry did not provide specific reasons for the announcement, but it does mean that Villarreal will have to provide more extensive security measures, with more police officers on duty.
‘The State Commission against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport has declared the Champions League match between Villarreal and Manchester United on November 23 as high risk,’ read a statement from Spain’s Interior Ministry.
Estadio de la Ceramica in Villarreal only holds 23,500, so it is no surprise that the game on 23 November is sold out, with Manchester United being given an allocation of 2,000.

The reverse fixture at Old Trafford was on 29 September and proved to be a memorable, dramatic contest which the Spanish side will count themselves very unlucky to have lost.
Paco Alcacer gave the visitors the lead in the second half, but Alex Telles quickly equalised and Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late winner to snatch victory in the 95th minute.
Unai Emery’s side have been in up-and-down form since then and find themslves down in 12th in La Liga.
They are well placed to qualify from Group F of the Champions League, though, sitting second and only behind United on goal difference.
