Pep Guardiola rates Mauricio Pochettino as an ‘excellent manager’ and says he can be considered a top boss despite the lack of silverware on his CV.
The current Paris Saint-Germain manager is being linked with the Manchester United job, either in the coming days or, more likely, at the end of the season.
The Argentine has an excellent reputation after the jobs he did at Espanyol, Southampton and, most notably, Tottenham before arriving at PSG, but he has picked up precious little silverware as a manager.
Since coming to PSG in January he has won the Coupe de France, but that is the only title on his record, which some observers mean casts doubt on his suitability to be United boss.
Guardiola does not see it that way, though, and rates Pochettino very highly indeed.
‘You can be a top manager without titles, of course,’ Guardiola said ahead of Man City’s clash with PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday.
‘The managers who have the chance to win titles are at top top clubs with good investments and exceptional players. Otherwise – it is impossible to win.
‘That doesn’t mean the managers in the Championship or in the Premier League but outside the top six cannot be excellent managers in tactics, and communication, leading the team, as human beings. It’s not necessary to win titles to be a top manager.
He added: ‘I’m pretty sure the managers get better every year. Every season we go through you have a lot of learning; I’m pretty sure he’s an excellent manager.’

Pochettino responded to the speculation in his press conference on Tuesday and simply said he is happy where he is in the French capital.
‘I’m happy in Paris,’ said Pochettino. ‘I know the city well both as a player and a coach, I have always lived this type of situation.
‘Things happen and it’s not my responsibility. What I’m going to say if you ask me is that I’m happy in Paris.’
