‘You’re the home team!’ – Andy Cole pinpoints Man Utd selection decision that Ralf Rangnick must fix after Wolves defeat

Andy Cole has criticised Ralf Rangnick’s decision to play two holding midfielders at home, insisting Manchester United must always be on the front foot when playing at Old Trafford.

United fell to a dismal 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Monday night with the club currently sat in seventh place, four points off fourth place Arsenal.

Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic started in midfield with Rangnick deciding against bringing on a more attacking-minded player in place of them in a game in where United struggled for any real creativity.

‘I’m not into two holding midfielders when you are at home,’ Cole told Premier League Productions.

‘Why? You’re the home team and if you are going to try win the league or try finish in the Champions League spots, you’ve got to attack as a home team.

‘If you look at that this evening, at what stage did you see Manchester United attack?’

Mason Greenwood was replaced by Bruno Fernandes on the hour mark, a change booed by the Old Trafford crowd with the 20-year-old forward one of their few bright sparks on the night.

Rangnick explained post-match he did not want to replace either of his sixes in McTominay and Matic and felt the only change he could make was bringing on Fernandes for Greenwood or Edinson Cavani – opting for the former.

‘He just said he wasn’t prepared to take off one of my sixes? Why not?’ Cole continued.

‘You’re the home team, you can take one off, Bruno can come in there and do his bit of magic. You’re trying to win a game at Old Trafford.

‘You don’t take off an individual who can score a goal or create a goal for a less creative player, that doesn’t make sense to me.’
