Teenager Cathal Heffernan has completed an eye-catching loan move from Cork City to Italian giants AC Milan, with the view to making the deal permanent.

The 16-year-old has been on trial with the Serie A side and done enough to earn a short-term deal on transfer deadline day.

Heffernan is captain of Republic of Ireland’s Under-17 side and made his Cork debut in the League of Ireland First Division last year, coming on in a 3-0 win over Galway United.

In an Instagram post the youngster wrote: ‘Words can’t describe how happy I am with this move to AC Milan. Can’t wait to get started and I’d like to thank all my family.’

He also thanked management team Sire-7 and former Manchester City player Stephen Ireland who has been working with the teenager.

Heffernan added: ‘Lastly I really want to thank @sire_7_ and @supermanireland7 because without you none of this would of happened and I am soo great full of this opportunity you have given me.’

The teenager comes from an incredible sporting family with father Rob and mother Marian representing Ireland at the Olympics.

Rob won the bronze medal in the 50km race walk at London 2012 and gold at the World Championships the year after in Moscow.

Marian ran the 400m and raced in the 4×400 at the 2012 Games.

Rob posted on Twitter on Monday celebrating the move. He wrote: ‘Finally, it’s official. So proud of you Cathal this is only the beginning. Now it’s time to work.’
