Rio Ferdinand has spoken for the first time about his ‘crazy’ health scare earlier this month, revealing that he ‘didn’t know where he was’ as he was admitted to hospital with a ‘mad virus’.

The former Manchester United and England star had been preparing to cover Arsenal’s clash with PSG for TNT Sports last week, but was struck down with a sudden illness ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg.

Just hours before kick-off, a ‘gutted’ Ferdinand shared a selfie from his hospital bed confirming that he could not provide punditry for the match – but would instead be keeping an eye on proceedings on his iPad.

Ferdinand was flooded with messages of love and support from across the footballing community and beyond, with fans expressing their concern for the 46-year-old, widely considered to be one of English football’s greatest ever defenders.

In the intervening days, has been as active as ever on his social media pages, celebrating United’s progression to the Europa League final and condemning those Liverpool supporters who booed Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But on the latest episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents, the six-time Premier League winner opened up for the first time about his scary ordeal, which, at times, had him fearing the worst.

At first, though, Ferdinand played down the health scare, joking: ‘My wife, the women in my family, will never know… man flu. That’s what it’s really about, man flu.’

Ferdinand went on to reveal that he felt his eyes were ‘going to pop out’ while he was projectile vomiting between bouts of vertigo.

‘I had a mad virus, bro. I thought lights were out at some point, I thought it was gonna happen. I thought I was minutes away from lights out, seriously,’ he added.

‘I was in my house, I was in my bed like this [pained expression] and I couldn’t even open my eyes.

‘Then, the headache I had… I don’t get migraines or nothing else so I don’t know what they’re like. I thought my head was in a vice and my eyes were going to pop out.

‘Then, I was being sick, projectile vomiting in the toilet, I got back to bed and I was having vertigo.

‘I was holding onto the sheets, I didn’t know where I was. It was crazy.’

Ferdinand started to ‘panic’ when his doctor raised the possibility that he may require a brain scan.

‘I had to go to hospital and the doctor even said to me, “Do you want an ambulance”, so that’s when I knew,’ he continued.

‘He went, “We’re going to get your brain scanned”. I thought it was a virus or a flu or something so when he mentioned brain scan and the ambulance, the panic was nuts.

‘I went to hospital and I was in there for a few days.

‘I couldn’t even enjoy the hospital food. The soup and the ice cream normally does wonders.’

Ferdinand appears to have made a full recovery and the legendary ex- England international will be expected to back on television screens for the last remaining European club football matches this season.

This year’s Europa League final between United and Tottenham in Bilbao will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1 on May 21.

Ten days later, Munich will host the eagerly anticipated Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan – which will also be shown on TNT Sports.

It remains to be seen if the broadcaster will provide a free stream for the contest, with last year’s final available for free via the the discovery+ app and website.
