Marseille’s Ligue 1 match with Nice was suspended on Sunday evening after Nice fans stormed the pitch in response to Dimitri Payet’s decision to throw a bottle back into the crowd.
Payet was struck on the back by a bottle thrown by a supporter in the 75th minute of the match and after it landed on the floor, the former West Ham midfielder launched it back towards the fans who were sat behind the goal.
Several Marseille players including Gerson, Matteo Guendouzi, Pape Gueye and Boubacar Kamara rushed towards the Nice fans as they attempted to confront Payet.
One supporter attempted to kick Payet but he was restrained by players from both sides.
Meanwhile, a member of Marseille’s coaching staff was seen running up to a Nice fan and punching him in the face.
Nice fans continued to storm the pitch in their droves, causing the match to be suspended.
Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli was also involved in an altercation with Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo as members from both sides argued on the pitch before heading to the tunnel.
Sampaoli was forcibly restrained by Payet, his own player, as he attempted to confront Todibo.
After both sets of players left the pitch, Marseille president Pablo Longoria was caught telling Ligue 1 officials in the tunnel: ‘We will not play! We will not play.’
