Gary Neville took aim at Calum Chambers after Sergi Canos’ stunning first-half strike against Arsenal, criticising the defender for failing to get tight enough on the onrushing Brentford attacker before the goal.

The Gunners started Friday’s Premier League opener the stronger team but it was the newly-promoted side who broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, with Canos’ driven effort sending the home crowd into raptures.

The Spaniard – who scored nine times in the Championship last term – showed brilliant composure to dance inside Chambers before unleashing a superb finish past a hapless Bernd Leno at his near post.

Many will feel Leno could have done more to prevent the goal but Manchester United legend Neville instead hit out at Chambers for his lacklustre defending in the build-up.

‘We know Brentford sustain attacks, they press high up the pitch. Calum Chambers doesn’t get tight enough to him,’ Neville said on Sky Sports at the half-time break.

‘Canos cuts inside, he does fantastically well, but you really have to get tight.

‘They just cause a real threat, do the right things, the Brentford forward players make the right runs.

‘Calum Chambers has really got to try and get a bit tighter there and show him onto his left foot.

‘I would ordinarily say that Leno shouldn’t be beaten at his near post but I know how difficult it is. It’s so close, the power of the shot and he’s got to cover that far corner as well and he can’t get there.’

Chambers started on the right side of Arsenal’s back-four in west London, with Hector Bellerin named among Mikel Arteta’s substitutes.

The Gunners were without strike duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, who were both ruled out of the clash due to illness.
