Sergio Aguero appeared to have finally fulfilled a long-held ambition by teaming up with compatriot Lionel Messi after he joined Barcelona from Manchester City earlier this summer.

The prolific pair have been mainstays of the Argentine international set-up over the course of the past decade and have locked horns regularly at club level during Aguero’s stints in the Premier League and at Atletico Madrid.

Messi’s presence was said to have been a huge factor in Aguero’s decision to pursue a move to Barcelona having departed City at the end of last season following another domestic triumph.

The pair were in action together over the summer as Argentina triumphed at the Copa America, as Messi finally ended his long wait for a major international title, and gave an indication of what fans at the Camp Nou had in store.

Aguero’s dream, however, has quickly turned into a nightmare with Barcelona’s perilous financial position, allied to La Liga’s strict policy on wage caps, bringing Messi’s 21-year association with the Catalan giants to a swift and wholly unedifying end.

Reports on Friday claimed Aguero was so disenchanted at the situation that he was already considering his future, but Sport have allayed those fears, insisting the 33-year-old remains committed to Barcelona and is looking forward to the coming season.

Messi, meanwhile, is said to be ‘shocked’ and ‘devastated’ about the way in which his Barcelona exit has played out and will take the next few days off to consider his next move.

Paris Saint-Germain are the clear favourites to to sign the 34-year-old, although Chelsea are said to be seeking last-minute talks with Messi’s agent and father, Jorge.

City, however, who have come close to signing Messi on two occasions are not in the running, according to Pep Guardiola, who has just spent £100million on Jack Grealish and maintains an interest in Tottenham talisman Harry Kane.
