Mikel Arteta was delighted with the contribution of new signing Aaron Ramsdale after the Arsenal goalkeeper kept a clean sheet on his debut against West Brom last night.
After consecutive defeats at the start of their Premier League season, the Gunners restored a measure of confidence by enjoying a 6-0 win at the Hawthorns against the Championship pacesetters in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
A hat-trick from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, allied to further goals from Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette helped Arteta’s side through to the next round against AFC Wimbldeon but, despite their dominance, Ramsdale was in the thick of the action throughout.

The 23-year-old only joined his new club from Sheffield United last week in a transfer that could eventually total £30million and Arteta was encouraged by what he saw from a player who will rival Bernd Leno for the No.1 spot this term.
‘I think it was a really strong debut,’ he said. ‘You can see his personality, he’s comfortable on the ball and I’m really glad for him.
‘I’m really happy with him. He hasn’t trained a lot with us, but you can see the qualities he has. He’s a really young goalkeeper – he’s done a lot already in the league and you can see the presence and the personality he has when he plays.’
Ramsdale, meanwhile, insisted there was more to come from him but admitted it will take time to get up to speed with the tactical demands of his new manager.
He said: ‘Yeah, I did what I needed to do, you know? There’s more to come in possession, but it’s not too much of a change of system from Sheffield United – but it is more ball-related.
‘We were asked to play out at my old club, but here it’s definitely the philosophy, so I can get better on the ball. I’ve had a few days of training with the team and I was happy, made some saves and did what I needed to do.
‘I’m in goal and first of all, you [need to] keep the ball out of the back of the net, and that’s what I’ve done.’
