Erling Haaland described Virgil van Dijk as the best defender he’s ever faced before the pair’s clash during Norway’s draw with the Netherlands on Wednesday night.
But any affection the Dutchman had for the Dortmund superstar may have been lost after the defender came off worse in a tussle with the Norwegian forward.
Van Dijk suffered a gruesome finger injury after a clash with Haaland in the 1-1 draw in Oslo and the Liverpool star certainly let his feelings be known.
Speaking to the Norwegian press after the match, Haaland revealed that Van Dijk let out an expletive as he was in so much agony after he ‘snapped’ his finger.

‘I actually snapped his finger on him,’ said Haaland.
‘I do not know how it happened. He just said “F***ing hell, you broke my finger”‘.
‘He’s good, so to speak. I have no idea how I snapped his finger. That’s just the way it is.’
The draw was Louis van Gaal’s first competitive match as Holland boss since his return for the third time.
Ronald De Boer was sacked after the country’s European Championships exit to the Czech Republic last summer.
Van Dijk admits he was content with his country’s draw, describing the result as ‘not too bad’.
‘They have speed in the team and play very directly. That’s their quality,’ said Van Dijk.
‘Sometimes we defended well, but sometimes they let through. We missed two chances, it was not too bad.’
