John Barnes believes Takehiro Tomiyasu won’t be playing as a right-back for Arsenal every week under Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal snapped up the defender in a deadline day deal, forking out £17m to Bologna to secure his services.
The 22-year-old has slotted straight into Arteta’s starting XI having played three times in the Premier League so far, including putting in an impressive display in the 3-1 win over rivals Tottenham.
Tomiyasu can play either right-back or centre-back but with Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White playing in the middle of defence, the Japan international has found himself on the right.
‘Takehiro Tomiyasu was solid in the game against Tottenham, but that’s a one off,’ Liverpool legend Barnes told Bonus Code Bets.
‘He is a centre-back originally despite playing right-back at the weekend. He may have played there on Sunday but that was just for that game.
‘I’m not sure he’s going to play there every week, but, against Spurs, he was impressive.’

Gunners fans have been impressed by their new signing’s work-rate and desire on the pitch and one of his former bosses has described the player as having a winning mentality like Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sporting director of Belgian club Sint-Truiden, Andre Pinto, who oversaw Tomiyasu’s move to Europe in 2018, believes the Arsenal defender has the right attitude to become a hit in the Premier League.
‘What is amazing about Tomi is that he doesn’t accept anything that isn’t success,’ Pinto told Goal.
‘He’s not lucky, nothing for Tomi comes because he’s lucky. He’s just a hard working player.
‘You find a lot of dedicated players, but Tomi has a little bit of the Cristiano Ronaldo mentality in terms of determination, in terms of working hard and in terms of eating healthy.
‘He is the type of player who is never satisfied. He will always continue to work hard to keep developing himself.’
