Man Utd won’t win the Premier League title due to key position concern – Micah Richards

Micah Richards doesn’t believe Manchester United will win the Premier League title this season despite the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils splashed the cash in the summer to bring in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Ronaldo to boost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s chances of winning the title.

But former Manchester City defender Richards feels Solskjaer’s side still lack a defensive midfielder capable of steering them to silverware.

Fred and Scott McTominay look to be the Norwegian’s preferred defensive midfield pairing while Nemanja Matic is also an option.

Donny van de Beek has struggled for game time too but Richards believes it’s a position of weakness for the Old Trafford outfit.

‘I think if they’re ever going to win the league or a trophy it will be in these next two years, even though I don’t think they will,’ Richards said on the BBC’s Match of the Day Top 10 podcast.

‘I think Chelsea are too strong. I think Liverpool with [Virgil] Van Dijk now…

‘I don’t think they [United] are going to win. I think they’ll come close.

‘The longevity of winning the league, 38 games, I just can’t see it.

‘We’re talking about Fred and Matic in that position. McTominay, he’s been injured though. [Paul] Pogba’s better going forward.

‘We’re talking about defensively, I can’t see it.

‘Varane is quality, the back line is superb but the holding midfield role I’m not sure about.’

Reports have already suggested United could be in the market for a defensive midfielder in January, but for now fans will have to get used to Fred and McTominay’s partnership.

‘First of all, the stats for those two together, we have had many good results,’ Solskjaer said of the pair last month.

“The way we broke up play against Villa I think they are very instrumental together. The energy and desire.

‘I really like to have the two of them. I can trust them to give us what they’ve got.

‘Fans will always have opinions, it is easy to say who should be playing.’
