Glenn Johnson wants Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be more like Jose Mourinho and not be afraid of dropping some of his better players for the good of the team.
United have won just three of their last eight matches in all competitions, with many of the club’s top players, including Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, being criticised for their poor performances of late.
Pressure is also growing on Solskjaer, who has been slammed for not establishing an identity during his almost three years in charge of the club so far, while also being accused of being too nice to make tough decisions.
The tension towards the Norwegian boss was slightly eased by a dramatic 3-2 win over Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night, with second-half goals from Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo and Maguire enough to overturn a 2-0 half-time deficit.
However, former Premier League right-back Johnson wants Solskjaer to be more ruthless in his team selection if some of his key stars are underperforming.
‘Absolutely, I think you have to [start dropping big players],’ Johnson told PA news agency in conjunction with William Hill.

‘Mourinho had it when we were at Chelsea. The team he would leave out on a Saturday was pretty much good enough to finish in the top six.
‘If you want to be the manager of a top club you have to be able to make the ruthless decisions. He has to make some big decisions and he has to leave some big names out. Mourinho literally couldn’t care less.
‘He knew he had a job and he protected his own job by picking a team to win a certain football match. If you want to work in big clubs that is what you have to do, you have to have that zero-tolerance attitude really.
‘Ole comes across as a really nice guy and I can’t imagine he wants to upset many people.
‘That’s fine, he can do it his way, he doesn’t have to upset people, he can deliver the message however he wants. But he has to deliver it at some point.’
United will be hoping for an improved performance when they host second-placed Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
