Jurrien Timber has opened the door to a move to Manchester United or Liverpool this summer after Ajax set their asking price for the Netherlands defender.

Timber has been one of Ajax’s most important players over the past three seasons and become a regular for his national side.

His form in the Eredivisie has caught the eye of Premier League rivals Man United and Liverpool, with both clubs tracking the 21-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.

United boss Erik ten Hag worked with Timber at Ajax and is keen to bring him to Old Trafford, but looks set to face competition from Jurgen Klopp who is keen to bolster his defensive options this summer.

Timber admits ‘there is a chance’ he could leave Ajax in the coming months and outlined some of the factors that will influence his decision.

‘It’s the same situation for me as last season,’ Timber told Ziggo Sport.

‘When I say I’m leaving, it has to fit. The important things are playing style and playing minutes… Competing for prizes is also important. My favourite country to play in? I dare not say.

‘That’s why I’m doing the same as last season. The chance is there [to leave Ajax], it can happen, but I’m also comfortable here. I’m still young and here everything also suits me. I’m going to watch quietly.’

While Ajax are open to offers for Timber, they want around £44m to part ways with the talented Dutchman, according to reports.

As Liverpool consider a move for Timber, former England defender Glen Johnson believes the Anfield club should take advice from his international team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

‘Virgil obviously knows him better than I do but he has 15 caps for Holland, so he clearly has a lot about him,’ Johnson told Betfred.

‘If you’ve got the two Holland international team’s centre-backs as your defensive pairing at club level, then usually that’s a bloody good start.

‘To play as many times as he has for his country at his age and for Virgil to speak so highly of him, then he’s clearly a very good player.’
