Frank Leboeuf was unimpressed with Chelsea suffering back-to-back Premier League defeats, the latest courtesy of a last-gasp Wolves winner.
Olivier Giroud had put Frank Lampard’s side in front with a sharp volley but Daniel Podence equalised with 25 minutes to go.
The match looked to be heading for a draw but in the 95th minute, Pedro Neto raced through and slotted past Edouard Mendy to earn Wolves only their second win in six games.
It was another frustrating result for Chelsea – who were also beaten by Everton on Saturday – but Leboeuf felt they only had themselves to blame.
And he singled out Mateo Kovacic for criticism for Wolves’ late winner and claimed they wouldn’t have scored if he was in the right position.
‘If at least you’re having a bad day and you think you cannot win, please try not to lose the game,’ Leboeuf told ESPN.
‘We saw that Liverpool didn’t lose, the two Manchester drew so they share points but Chelsea lost because they wanted to win the last game and they lost again today (yesterday) because they tried to win in the last minute.
‘I want to see players like Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante, Kovacic – players who have experience – to say, “Okay, we can’t win today so we don’t lose that’s the main thing we have to do”.
‘The last minute, I saw Kovacic going forward and being too far away, therefore the counterattack – I don’t know if it’s Podence who got the ball and gave it to Neto – but he wasn’t in position, he should have stayed there.
‘Silva and N’Golo Kante should have told him, “You stay there because at least if we don’t score the goal, we draw”. That’s the main thing.
‘I think they have to be more responsible for their acts. Of course they can be tired but at least with the players they have – they have N’Golo Kante a world champion in the middle of the park – they should have leaders who can say, “Okay today we are bad, we don’t lose the game, we draw”.’
