Ralf Rangick explains why he picked Cristiano Ronaldo as captain over David de Gea for Wolves clash

Ralf Rangnick says he prefers to name an outfield player as captain after handing the armband to Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United’s clash with Wolves.

Ronaldo captains the side for just the second time across both spells at the club for Monday’s Premier League clash with regular skipper Harry Maguire missing out through injury.

De Gea has captained United on a number of occasions during his time at Old Trafford and has been tipped as a potential candidate to replace Maguire as permanent skipper – with the England international coming in for widespread criticism during a difficult season.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Rangnick admitted de Gea was in the running to lead the side out against Wolves but felt Ronaldo was the better option.

‘He is the most experience player in total if we count up the time he has played for Manchester United, he has probably been at the club the longest time,’ Rangnick told Sky Sports.

‘The choice for me to be honest was David de Gea or him and I wanted to have a field player with the captaincy and that is why I chose Cristiano.’

Phil Jones partners Raphael Varane at the back in the absence of Maguire, making his first appearance for the club since January 2020.

‘From what I’ve seen, so far, I can only speak about the last four weeks in training, he was extremely professional all the time, even when he was not in the squad,’ Rangnick said of Jones.

‘Since last night, the other two centre-backs who played against Burnley were out so, for me, he was the logical choice.’
