Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son is to undergo surgery on a fractured arm this week and is going to miss several weeks of action as a result.
The South Korean suffered the injury in Spurs’ dramatic 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, in which he scored twice, including the last minute winning goal.
Tottenham could not put an accurate estimate on when the 27-year-old would be available again, stating: ‘Following surgery, our medical staff shall be reviewing management options for Son’s rehabilitation with the player expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks.’
It is a bitter blow for manager Jose Mourinho, who is already operating without first choice centre-forward Harry Kane, who is out with a hamstring injury.
Kane is not even expected to return to training until April and it could prove to be that Son will also not be available till then either.
It is understood by the Athletic that Son suffered the injury early in the match against Villa but didn’t realise the severity of it until a scan on Monday revealed the extent of the problem.
The worst reported prognosis is eight weeks out for the South Korea international, which would keep him out of 10 games, including both legs of the Champions League last 16 tie with RB Leipzig.
With Kane and Son out, it is likely that Lucas Moura will play up front, with the only natural striker available to Mourinho being 18-year-old Troy Parrott who has made just one Premier League appearance for the club.
Son has been a key player for Tottenham this season, scoring nine Premier League goals and 16 in all competitions.
