Chelsea hero Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hit out at Kepa Arrizabalaga after the Spaniard’s first-half blunder against Luton and claimed any other top goalkeeper at the Premier League would have kept out Jordan Clark’s strike.
Summer arrival Edouard Mendy has taken over the reins as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper this season but Arrizabalaga was given a chance to impress on Sunday afternoon as the Blues played host to Championship outfit Luton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Tammy Abraham gave the home team a healthy advantage with a pair of well-taken goals in the opening 17 minutes and Frank Lampard’s men were cruising when the Hatters mounted a rare attack at Stamford Bridge.
And while Kepa managed to get his right hand to Clarke’s strike on the half-hour mark, it was yet another moment to forget for the Spain international – world’s most expensive ‘keeper – as the tame effort squirmed past him to reduce the deficit.
‘For me he needs to save this, sorry,’ ex-Chelsea striker Hassenbaink said during BBC Sport’s half-time analysis.
‘Sorry but I think he sees enough of the ball, the player. What’s the player going to do there? He’s going to hit the ball.
‘Every time he goes in goal at Chelsea he knows he’s under pressure because everyone is looking at him because of how he started, how he did last year. And this obviously doesn’t help him as well.
‘If you look at the other goalkeepers in the league at the top end, they would save this.
‘That’s where he’s at and it’s a problem.’
Former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy added: ‘Well he should have saved it, there’s no doubt about that.
‘It’s great for Luton of course because it’s getting them back in the game and getting the goal.
‘But the keeper should do better. It’s too often with him.
‘We were talking during the game, I’m not sure that Frank actually wants to play him.
‘It’s not a bad strike but it’s not with any velocity.’
