Manchester United are reportedly ready to accept defeat in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho and delay their plans to sign him for another season.

Red Devils chiefs are unwilling to meet Dortmund’s £108million valuation of the England international, particularly when wages and agent fees would be so expensive on top.

United believe the price tag placed on Sancho’s head is unrealistic in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic and are concerned by handing the 20-year-old a salary close to £300,000-a-week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will therefore be forced to wait to land his top target, unless there is a re-evaluation across the parties this summer.

United suspect the Covid-19 crisis will reset the transfer market and players’ wages so hope to get more value from the deal further down the line, according to the Mirror.

Sancho is also unwilling to force an exit from the Bundesliga giants.

Dortmund director of football Michael Zorc has insisted Sancho will be staying for another season and United will return to lure him to Manchester next summer instead.

They risk facing competition from Europe’s top clubs by delaying the deal.

Real Madrid, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Chelsea are among the clubs who hold an interest in signing the attacker.

United have a clear run at him this summer, but other European heavyweights could complicate the picture come the end of the season.

Solskjaer has been clear in his vision that United need to spend in order to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool and United are still expected to invest this summer.
