Paris Saint-Germain are expecting a reunion with Edinson Cavani to be ‘strange and awkward’ when they welcome Manchester United to the Parc des Princes later this month.

Cavani left PSG at the end of last season and has signed a two-year deal at Old Trafford.

United have drawn PSG in the Champions League group stages, meaning Cavani will be reunited with his former club within the first month of representing his new one.

After the international break, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will travel to Newcastle in the Premier League before a trip to the French capital on October 20.

Assuming Cavani is up to speed, he will be part of the travelling squad to Paris and United could be tempted to throw him in from the start given his acrimonious exit after seven years at the Ligue 1 giants.

His final year in Paris was the worst season of his career.

He only made seven starts in the league and suffered with injuries to his groin and calf.

With his contract expiring and PSG chiefs deciding to make Mauro Icardi’s loan move permanent, the writing was on the wall for him.

A source close to PSG told The Athletic: ‘It will be strange and awkward for us to see him again but less so without the fans and Ultras in the stadium.

‘I am sure he will be determined to prove Thomas Tuchel wrong a little bit, too. He has good memories of the club, I am sure.’

Cavani banged in 200 goals during his time with the Parisian giants and will now look to provide competition for the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in United’s forward line.

United and PSG are joined in Group H by Red Bull Leipzig and İstanbul Başakşehir.
