Mesut Ozil is ‘very close’ to leaving Arsenal on loan for Fenerbahce in January, according to reports in Turkey.

The 31-year-old’s difficulties at the Emirates have not eased since the departure of Unai Emery from the dugout, with his form and demeanor still far from where Gunners fans would want them to be.

The Germany international last scored for Arsenal in April and has found the back of the net just twice in all of 2019 as he has often struggled to get into the first team.

Interim boss Freddie Ljungberg has shown some faith in Ozil, but his troubles were clear when he was substituted against Manchester City in his last outing and kicked his gloves along the touchline.

His unfortunate run in north London could be coming to an end, with Turkish publication Fotomac reporting that a January loan move to Fenerbahce is ‘very close’ for Ozil.

This would see the playmaker move to the Istanbul club until the end of the season at least, although his Arsenal future would still be up in the air as his contract at the Emirates runs until the summer of 2021.

Fenerbahce have been interested in signing Ozil before, but his deal at the Gunners has been prohibitive for any move as he earns an enormous £350,000-a-week.

There were talks of him making the switch over the summer, but the Turkish side admitted that they could simply not afford to sign him.

‘Mesut Ozil, with his career and standing, successfully represents our country abroad,’ read a club statement in July.

‘He is an important value known with the identity of Fenerbahce.

‘However, Fenerbahce does not have a proposal for Mesut Ozil. Under the current economic conditions, such a step is not possible for both parties.

‘Our president, Ali Koc, made statements on the subject in the WinWin program held on June 20 and emphasised that this could not be realised in the short term.’

Arsenal are set to appoint Mikel Arteta as their new manager in the extremely near future and Ozil’s future will be influenced by the Spaniard.

If Arteta is keen to keep him around then any deal could be taken off the table, although the board do want to shed the vast wages of the under-performing star.
