Mikel Arteta has revealed that he has tried to inject more tempo and aggression into the Arsenal side since taking charge – and is hoping to see early signs of it against Bournemouth.
The Spanish coach takes charge of the Gunners for the first time on the south coast on Boxing Day, having watched their previous draw against Everton from the stands last weekend.
He has had several days to work with the squad and try to bring his more attacking style of play to Arsenal’s players and is looking to see signs of evolution straight from the off.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video at the Vitality Stadium shortly before kick-off, Arteta explained the changes he has made, saying: ‘The first thing I’ve tried to change is the rhythm.
‘We’ve tried to change a little bit the dynamic they were at, put a little bit more aggression and passion into the game.
‘And obviously give them an overall picture of what I’m looking for with and without the ball for them.’
Pressed on what exactly he’s looking for, Arteta continued: ‘Well that’s for us! But we have a clear idea of what we try to do.
‘Obviously we need many more days to try to evolve, but at least they know what I’m expecting, what the team will try to do to us and what the solutions are for us.’
On making his managerial bow, Arteta added: ‘Very excited. Obviously it’s a new experience for me but I’ve seen the atmosphere in the last few days in the training ground and I’m really looking forward to it.’
Arsenal are on a run of having won just once in their last 15 matches in all competitions and Arteta has made three changes for the match, notably bringing Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette back into the starting XI.
