Bernardo Silva has been charged with misconduct by the FA over a tweet he sent to Manchester City team-mate Benjamin Mendy.
The 25-year-old midfielder likened Mendy to character which appears on Conguitos, a Spanish chocolate peanut brand which is also sold in his native Portugal.
It’s believed Silva committed an ‘aggravated breach’ of FA rules as the message referred to a fellow player’s ‘race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin’.
The Portugal international has written to the FA to formally apologise for the tweet and could face a six-match suspension.
He has until October 9 to appeal the FA’s charge.
More to follow.
