Harry Maguire believes he should be given five or six years in a Manchester United shirt before anyone should judge his performances for the club.

The world’s most expensive defender arrived at Old Trafford from Leicester City for £80m this summer, but it has been a turbulent start to life in Manchester for the England international.

The 26-year-old has started all eight of United’s Premier League games this season, but the Red Devils have only won two of them and kept just two clean sheets, most recently losing to Newcastle United on Sunday.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under increasing pressure to start picking up results, but Maguire insists that this team should not he and his team should not be judged on anything they do this season, but over a much longer period of time.

‘I think it’s the long term, that’s what the main thing is,’ Maguire said, via the Mirror. ‘In five or six years’ time, judge me then – whether I have been a success at this club or not.

‘I do believe and am really confident that, in five or six years’ time, I’ll be a success and I am sure we’ll have many, many good times here.

‘We need to keep improving as a team, not just me as an individual. I feel, if we improve as a team, I’ll be a success too.’

Maguire’s enormous transfer fee has been touted as a possible reason for his slow start to life at his new club, but the giant defender has dismissed that idea.

‘[The fee] doesn’t bother me at all,’ the centre-back told Inside United. ‘It’s something that I can’t affect. Leicester wanted to keep me and they are in a great position as a club.’

The Red Devils now have the international break to regroup before they host Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday 20 October, a match Solskjaer described as the ‘perfect game’ for his side.

‘That’s a perfect game for us,’ the Norwegian told the BBC after the Newcastle defeat. ‘The international break is also at the perfect time because their heads need a bit of airing.

‘They [Man Utd’s players] will go away with their national teams, meet their team-mates and come back fresh.

‘We have had a good time together, we have prepared since the first day of pre-season, we have stuck to the same principles.’

‘We are never happy when we don’t win and we are going through a very difficult period.’

Maguire himself issued a rallying cry to his team-mates after the loss to the Magpies, tweeting: ‘Not good enough, gutted. We must stick together.’

United sit 12th in the Premier League, having picked up nine points from their opening eight games of the campaign.
