Rafael van der Vaart compared Harry Maguire to a Sunday league ‘amateur’ before Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer identified Maguire as his top transfer target at the start of the summer and got his man as Leicester accepted a world record £80million offer for the 26-year-old on August 2.
Maguire has not had the start that he would have hoped at Old Trafford, though, with United winning just two of their opening nine matches in the Premier League.
But, to Maguire’s credit, the Red Devils have only conceded nine goals in the English top flight since his arrival.
The England international produced an accomplished display against league leaders Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
Despite Maguire’s promising start in United colours, Van der Vaart is yet to be won over by the centre-back.
The Dutchman, speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford, slammed Maguire while comparing him with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
‘He can do something, but if he is worth so much money, Virgil van Dijk is worth £300million,’ Van der Vaart told Ziggo Sport.
‘If I am going to play with the amateurs on Sunday afternoon, I can easily find three who can do this. I mean that seriously.
‘A bit silly to say, but I really think so.’
It’s not the first time Van der Vaart has taken aim at Maguire either. He took aim at the England centre-back for his performances in the Nations League.
Van der Vaart said: ‘It’s funny because during the Nations League, I was doing work for Dutch television.
‘And I remember we were saying Harry Maguire was by far the worst player on the pitch.
‘And then two months later, £80-£90m? Unbelievable.‘
