Real Madrid have vehemently denied rumours that Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with anxiety problems after the goalkeeper was substituted at half-time against Club Brugge.
Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis scored a brace inside the opening 39 minutes at the Bernabeu before Madrid salvaged a draw with goals from Sergio Ramos and Casemiro after the break.
Courtois, who has badly struggled since his move from Chelsea, who was widely criticised for his part in both of Dennis’ goals and Alphonse Areola came on in the Belgian’s place for the second half.
Local publication OkDiario reported that Courtois had been diagnosed with anxiety and this was the reason for Zinedine Zidane’s substitution.
However, Madrid have confirmed that Courtois was taken off as he was suffering from stomach problems.
An official Madrid statement on Friday morning said: ‘At no point was our player diagnosed with symptoms of anxiety and this information is absolutely false.
‘Thibaut Courtois was diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis and dehydration along with an imbalance of electrolytes and he couldn’t finish the game on Tuesday against Brugges.
‘The player is responding well to the treatment.’
More to follow.
